First Solar (FSLR).  I strongly believe it will go to 100 within a year. Now ~27.  Even the book value is $38/share.

Anyone can invest on stocks and there is no any restrictions to buy stocks for F-1. I would suggest to call brokers like ameritrade, merril edge and many more others. They will help you to open a brokerage account. Before buying stocks, it is very important to do a good research on companies where you are investing. You should know how the company is growing, profit and market capacity. Do not spend all in one stock, it is better to put money on different stocks. Also, you wouldn't not expect it to grow  in a day or a month or a year. You got  a have guts and patience. Here is my suggestion for 2013 and I personally prefer dividend stocks.

1.AUY/GG (gold stocks: low price and it won't stay like this forever)
2.EGAS/LINE(natural gas stocks: good dividend and high chance of growing)
3.INTC/CSCO (technology: slow growth but worthy)
4.BAC/HBAN (Banking: hurt by economy in the past but good indication of growing)
5. T (telicommunication: also good dividend)

P.S: you buy stocks when the price is low and sell it whe it is high.

How much money approximately should we have just to get started and learn?
How many particular stocks do people generally buy at a time?
Besides the cost of stocks what other expenses are to be considered?

Any links to useful sites....

Thank you very much for detailed information. I am in F1 status and i am not sure how long i will stay in USA . Do u think it is still worth to try stocks? For me it may be better to think short term goal rather than to get benefit in long  waiting, right?. I actually have one accout in Fidelity through my university but i totally got confused when i started to read information on the Fidelity website and could not decide what exactly i needed to do to invest on stocks.

At first i am interested to invest few thousands (2-5 thousands) so i can learn ways of trading stocks  and also intend to earn some money if not significant amount.

I appreciate your input.

what I would say is: If you have savings and you are sure you don't need those money anytime sooner in future, then its worth buying stocks. Market is always up and down like a bouncing ball. There is a time to catch it and release it.

Here are some quotes by stock daddy Waren Buffet:

Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.

I never attempt to make money on the stock market. I buy on the assumption that they could close the market the next day and not reopen it for five years.

Our favorite holding period is forever.

Time is the friend of the wonderful company, the enemy of the mediocre.

Longed RAX, INFI, INO, SNDK, ABZ
Shorted LNKD, BBRY, ABX

I dont know for how long Elon Musk can micromanage the stock prices but SCTY is bull like TSLA.

Dragontatoo, i agree with your pick for Gold Stocks.. GG.. Gold miners have been suffering a lot last few years but I think now we are close to a bottom in the miners and the HUI.
