Texas is pretty big. Even the shifts of tectonic plates cannot move it much. Good luck moving it by yourself.

Now, serious suggestion:
I have heard people working in Gas stations (Gas Engineers) and 7-11/Subway franchise (Franchise consultants) and making a living in Texas. But if odd job is what you like, then NY/Boston area is not that bad. There are job agencies in NY that can help you out and with your GC, you should not have too much problem finding one. What kind of jobs do you want anyways?

I think you have to prioritize your goal first.

Why did you come to US? Was it to earn money and send back OR you want to change your life, study and stuff?

Have you taken loans that your family has to pay soon?

It is really hard to recommend anything without knowing your situation. If just for job, then yes Texas and other states could provide your job. You have a GC, so you can try temp agencies too, they can get you somewhere depending upon your experience and education level.

KK123, you will easily qualify for FAFSA (loans), grants etc. Financial aid and affordability shouldn't be an issue to you. In fact, you will even get money to go community colleges if your income is as low as you told us.

Since your academic qualifications aren't that good, you will be struggling in the long run, provided that your priority is to make money or living in the US long-term. At least get a Bachelor's. You can always take vocational courses like Mechanics training etc but to hold a decent paying job, you need skills and meet up basic requirements. You won't make decent money by working in Gas Stations/Liquor stores, even if you worked in one for 20 years.

I'd strongly urge you to go to a community college and speak to the financial counselor. Start off by taking some 6-9 credits in your first semester but remain focussed on graduating college. You can also do part time job.

Also, try finding jobs in non-traditional places. Non-traditional jobs meaning outside common workplaces(i.e. Gas Stations, Liquor stores and Indian Restaurants). Talk to your customers and start networking. Who knows, maybe one of them works in a bar and will hire you as a barback, eventually paving the way for you to become a bartender?

In any case, keep focussed and push yourself to getting an academic degree.

Good luck!

 riddle bro

i might be wrong, but doesnt a GC holder is restricted to apply for financial aid and any other government welfare/aid for several period of time like 5 years?? isnt the whole sponsor and bank balance thing for gc holder during the interview to guarantee that gc holder would not rely on the government for some specific period of time?

again, i might be wrong here.

If you have GC and if you are resident of that place for at least a year then you should be eligible to apply for FAFSA. And if your income is low, you will even receive financial aid. The amount of aid depends on the number of units u have taken. I am telling you this by my own experience. Hope that helps.

If you have helping person in Texas, it should be OK to move to Texas. Minimize expenses, share rooms, avoid expensive phones/plans.
Financial obstacles should not be the issue on education considering your legal status.
Family do have expectations from American...but you should prioritize your goals, and start working on achieving them.

I personally have moved around a lot here in the states. I did my undergrad in Oklahoma and I feel like places like OK and texas are the best places to go if you want to pursue your education. The cost of education there is so much cheaper than anywhere else and also is the cost of living. You can start off by joining a community college and then you can work part time. I have had a lot of frens do that and then transfer to a better school to graduate. This saves you a lot of money as well.

So , My suggestion is moving to texas or any place in the south for that matter and finishing your education then concentrating on making money. In the long run, nthg is more important than having a degree in hand which opens up a lot of opportunities.

Texas is arguably the best state if earning/saving money whilst attending affordable colleges is your topmost priority. MN and OK have gotta be up there too, especially the former if you wish to be able to finance your education with your own income. 3-4k/semester for a 4-yr college. Can't beat that!
