A Tibetan protester in monk's robes doused himself with gasoline, set himself ablaze and chanted anti-China slogans as he ran down a street in Nepal's capital this morning.
His demonstration outside the Buddhist holy site, the Boudhanath stupa, is the latest in a string of self-immolations protesting China's rule over Tibet.
Witnesses in Nepal said the man entered a cafe in Kathmandu's Boudhanath district - home to many Tibetan Buddhist temples and monasteries - and asked to use the bathroom.
After spending some time there, he went onto the street and lit himself on fire.
He ran a few steps, covered in flames and chanting slogans against China, before collapsing in front of the mammoth Boudhanath stupa, one of the holiest Buddhist sites in the world, surrounded by prayer wheels and decorated with colourful streams of prayer flags.

Somebody seems to have woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

This act wasn't pointless (pointless would be someone who sets on a world tour preaching world peace, imo) as his act will encourage other Tibetans to follow his suits but definitely idiotic, as is the case with suicides. You don't kill yourself to make a point/statement.

No top news media highlighted this major news, which itself is more sad news.

Riddle just because you are going to lose you are not even going to put up a fight ? Remember the sun never set in the British Empire too. And all those brave Nepali folks who fought against them at that time were fools ? The Dutch-East India Company was also invinsible at one point and time and the Japanese were fools to have gone against them?  The entire eastern Europe would still be saying Kharashooo if they had given of hope of ever becoming Bosnia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan etc. etc. Or even Scotland would not be what it is if they has given up. Same way if we(Nepali ppl) give up Nepal as a country would cease to exist.

If more protestors start burning themselves to death with gasoline, there will be just one achievement. Baburam will increase the price of gasoline.

 Bathroom

Noone's telling you to give up a fight that can be won. But you have to remember the age old fable about mice belling the cat. Noone even attempted to bell the cat since they very well know it's the bitter truth that they would not win.

Just think about Nepal trying to gain the Greater Nepal back from India. Noone even bothers because there is no chance that is going to happen. That does not make them foolish. It just shows that they are making reasonable decisions about what is attainable goal and what is not.

Some goals are simply not attainable and if you are smart you will know what it is. Otherwise you will die trying.

All the examples you have given were examples where the goals were attainable and it was attained.

@ Rethink bro,

i do agree with the gist of your message. Greater Nepal is a possibility though. It is another thing that it will never happen because our country is weak. As Nepal has documents to prove, all we need is to be aggressive with the British and take the matter to the UN. But our leaders need guts for that which of course we dont have.

But if our country were strong and our leaders patriotic, greater Nepal is very much a possibility.

Freedom: Do you think the party leaders are on that  side, greater Nepal.
They are just the Rana primer, afraid of handling new Land and New People.

Bathroom,

Riddle just because you are going to lose you are not even going to put up a fight ?

This is a Taliban like statement. What is really the difference between the sucide bomber and a self immolator? First, i am just tired of those tibetian refugees and Dalai Fking Lama  to use Nepal for their political gains and secondly, what the fk is up with the sucide missions??? Get over it? don't kill yourself for someone's deed. Its better if you just fight with them. You might just throw one punch to the guy you dont like before you get shot.

so sad to hear that he died. What a long painful way to die. RIP... Although I dont like violence, I think these guys would achieve more if they attacked China similar to taliban suicide bombers.

Sap dude I agree with you. Self immolation is useless. Chinese goft has killed people to take over Tibet, does anyone think they will give up Tibet because someone kills himself? It's a foolish move and the person wastes his life for nothing, giving so much pain to the family.

You've gotta wonder what must be going through his parents' minds. What a pathetic manner to surrender yourself.

As an aside, I'm really amazed by lack of gratitude by Tibetans towards us. It feels like they don't want any ties with us while a majority of us have nothing but feelings of sympathy and good wishes for them. That said, it's my personal opinion based on my own personal experiences gained while playing soccer with them. They're really unapproachable and unfriendly. Maybe other people might have experienced quite the opposite.

This conversation has taken a racist connotation. Indians take out their frsutration on Nepali. Nepali take out their frustration to Tibetans now ?  DO ON TO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD WNAT THEM TO DO TO YOU(THE GOLDEN RULE).

Sap dude--> Sucide Bombers tries to kill other where as this person is trying to bring attention to a cause he or she truly believes in. To you all it might be a lost cause, yes. But this person gave up his life for a cause he truly believed in. The same way if Gandi had given up there would be no India(remember the sun never sets in the mighty British Empire). If Balbhadra Kunwar and other beer Nepalis had given up Nepalis would probably be speaking hindi. If Sukra Raj Sastri and his frens had given up we would still be ruled by Shree 3 sarkars.

Bathroom,

You really do not know the difference between fighting to death and a sucide ( a cowardish hopeless way of ending the life)

Are you serious to compare the sucide bombers and self emolators to Balabhadra Kuwar and Gandhi? Its one thing to go on hunger strike, revolution, or a war but its totally another thing to kill yourself in a mass to make a point. Sucide is a sucide, be it bin laden inspired or Dalai Lama inspired.

 Sap dude,
He died for a cause. To bring attention of people like you and me. We are talking about it arn't we ? There is a difference between jumping off a bride because your girlfriend dumped you and this. IT IS THE CAUSE, a Purpose. People are saying its a lost cause but put yourself in his shoes(would you die for your country ?).  Gotta have balls to do this kinda thing. When hunger strikes is not working and you are a peace loving person and you don't have the resources for war...... what do you do... you do what you can.

Suicide is a crime, you cannot commit a crime to make your voice heard.

BC seems to have taken this personally now. I'm done with the discussion. I remain adamant with what I said. It was an idiotic act. Just because average Joes talked about it doesn't mean a whole lot. I bet a huge majority of people in the US are talking about the ex-cop who went on a rampage killing several officers. Does it mean anything? This scenario is no different. Most neutrals aren't gonna do anything about them. If anything, more Tibetans are likely to follow his suits and get involved in killing themself. Hence, the act won't be pointless, but definitely idiotic.
