Hi guys, please help me out on this.

I had a job in NY State until August 2012.

I moved to Virginia in September 2012.

I have two separate W-2 forms; one for NY and the other for VA, because I paid taxes to NY until August at my old job and then paid taxes to VA State since September at my new job.

While filing tax on TurboTax, it asks me if I stayed in NY all year long in 2012, and then; when I select "NO" it does not let me file the state tax.

Please suggest me what to do. I was resident of NY until August 2012. I have been resident of VA since the first week of September 2012.

You have to file part year resident taxes for both states some filers ( may be turbo tax) do not let e file part year returns
You can efile federal and may have to paper file your state returns

I had W-2s for three states and was in the same situation as you are. I e-filed federal and paper-filed state returns.

Even you stayed majority of the time in NY , but moved out permanently and residing VA .You should use NY as non-resident and resident for VA.
you can try etiher way and find out which one is more favourable.

Most software will ask if you want to add another state? If you choose yes, then it will ask you the date and months you lived in that state.  Try Taxact.com 9.99 or 15 dollars. It always ask do you want to add another state?

You have to use part year resident for both states if you lived part year.
Non resident is totally different than part year resident.
