Guys – would like to get your expert opinion on GC and Citizenship related questions? Please share your thoughts if you have been in this situation or you may have encounter this in past for any reason
1) To apply for US Citizen how sooner (months) we can start processing if you are approaching 5 years in GC?

2) If we decide to be a us citizen what are the drawback for us besides getting visa, not being Nepalese citizen  - like can we still own/buy property or start business there? Any suggestion if we can still maintain our GC here at the same time we stay Nepal for couple of years and come back? Looks like there is only 6 months period to be out when you are in GC? What about NRN

Thanks for your comments in advance

It's either 4 yrs and 9 months or 2 yrs and 9 months. Basically, it depends on how you got your GC. This should help clarify further http://[Disallowed String for - use of tinyur to promote site not allowed].com/ygt5aml

Re:
question 2. It's kinda in the gray area, especially when it comes to parental properties, inheritence, purchase and what not. As a GC holder, you can actually stay out of the country for upto a year (2 years if you filed for reentry permit). However, if you spent more than 6 months outside the US, your waiting period to apply for citizenship gets reset. Hope that helps.

Here's the original link. http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=86bd6811264a3210VgnVCM100000b92ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=86bd6811264a3210VgnVCM100000b92ca60aRCRD shortened and shared it in my previous post.

It is 90 days, and exactly 90 days, before your five years of residency that you are eligible to apply for naturalization. I don't have the exact link but if you go over uscis.gov, you should find it. According to it, because 3 months is not equal to 90 days, make sure your naturalization application package does not reach before 90 days of the date your PR card issued date reaches 5 years. Been through it, so I know.

About the second question, I don't know what the law is but I have heard you can't buy properties because Nepal does not accept dual citizenship yet. You don't have to give up your Nepalese citizenship while getting US citizenship here, but once in Nepal, when you have US citizenship, your Nepalese ciitizenship is assumed void.

But yes, you can be out of US for upto 2 years if you apply for a reentry permit. otherwise it's six months.

As a Permanent Resident, you can stay outside for upto 1 year, not just 6 months.http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.eb1d4c2a3e5b9ac89243c6a7543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=3f443a4107083210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=3f443a4107083210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD

Thanks Riddle/Jharke/Abi for your sources and information, i really appreciate your input to my questions. Just kind of confused - i bet all of us are on the same boat for these kinds of situations - i wish we have dual citizen ship so that we dont give up what we achieved here for so long years being far from our family/friends and home/country.. i wish you all the best whomever had a similar kind of dilemma on whether to stay here or go back for good.
