 Hi all

after planning to visit Nepal this year for Dashain, I was dismayed to find my wife's passport is about to expire.
it'll expire in the first week of October. So I was thinking of traveling  in the 3rd week of sept.
my travel agent says it should be ok but some people advise against it sayin you need to have passport valid for at least 6 months.

the Nepalese embassy takes around 3 months to get it renewed.

Wanted to know if anyone had similar experience or had suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Renew the Passport in Nepal. They will cancel the passport saying Cancelled without Prejudice. But while coming back u have to carry exp passport with valid VISA and new passport. I did the same thing. My passport was about to expire a year back of return. So that would be the best suggestion. You don't have to go American Embassy or anything like that. Passport department will take care of it

Expediting the process isn't worth it unless you're willing to pay $300 as opposed to $150 for normal processing. You might wanna call the embassy's passport section to be on the safe side.

In worst case scenario, you can get a travel document issued by the Nepalese embassy that's valid for 3 months. Paying $40 for it will make far more economic sense than applying for a new passport.

Enjoy your Khasi/Chyangra/ranga.

As per my experience, passport " HAS TO BE 06 MONTH VALID " for International travel.
My freind was not able to board a flight ( Her passport was 4 mnth valid )

Nepal embassy will issue temporary passport which will be valid for 01 yr  for which it cost $20.00. For more infos please call them or check their website.  It takes 2 days , not more than that.  After you receive the other passport you need to resend temporary one .., they will void it.

Its an International travel, don't take a risk. Carry both Old and new passport to avoid any cross question in immigration.
(We did the same thing)

Embassy will keep the copy for further process.

No hassle.

Good Luck !

Lucky gal, you're better off calling the embassy in issues like this.

 Thanks guys for the suggestions!

I am taking the temp passport route as a solution.
Only when you apply for a MRP, you have the option of applying for a temp passport with a validity period of a year.
I was told by the embassy that it takes a week or a two get the temp one, which works for me.
Also there is an option of getting travel document valid for 3 months.

Of all, getting A4 paper for passport application sucks big time..not readily available :(

Cheers!! and hope Nepal wins tomorrow!

Hi Gotexasgo, did you apply for renewal ? And what are the requirements for applying temporary one ? Do you have to send seperate request with valid and strong reason for it ? It would be great if you can share your experience. Thanks !

I'd recommend you call the embassy once..
Yes you have to apply for renewal of a regular passort [takes 2-3 mnths], to apply for a temp pasport.
I told them i was travelling soon and wanted a new passport and they recommended a temp passport. I don't know regarding a 'strong reason' to get a temp one. They charge you for that anyway.

Hope this helps.
