Civil/structural engineer hau,

I have a question. For a given truss memeber, how do you design the member? You are given the compression or tension forces in each member. I have learned how to design beams and columns but I cannot find more on designing a truss member. Any input will be helpful.

Thank you.

Oh_gaathe,
Assuming you are using Steel sections use AISC manual for compression and tension capacity of different shape and sizes. For detail use spec section. This is for individual member only(based on your question), for full truss design you have to consider other factors as well.
Hope it helps.

Hello Stat,

it does help. I will be designing for individual member. Do you know any references or worked out problems that might be helpful?]

Thanks once again.

Not exactly sure about what is it that you are trying to design. But in general the members in compression will have to analyzed for column buckling in compression and the members in tension will have to be analyzed for net section tension and fatigue.
