The tipping service does not make any sense at all. All it does is lets restaurant owners exploit their waiters by paying them less than minimum wage and expecting the customers to pay the rest. As a customer we should only pay for the food. Why should we pay the waiter's salary? It is his/her employers job. You can say, "well, but you have to tip for the service." But isn't it the job of the waiter to bring our food from the kitchen to our table? Isn't he being paid for that? So why should I need to pay him extra? Then why don't we tip our mechanics, our doctors, our house keeper, the cashier etc.

You must tip (though it is not mandatory) if you are getting service. Not giving tips or tips less than 15-20% are considered very rude here. I always give tips for 20% or sometime even more if I really like service and foods. Sometime I write a write a thank you note on bill to cook if food is awesome and tell waitress to hand over that note to cook.

Do you know how much is the waitress's hourly rate? somewhere between $2-3/hr. They depend on tips only. Some pizza delivery boys uses their own car to deliver pizza.

Don't you think you should give something to the people who travels miles, any time of day and deliver your food to your door? C'mon people, giving someone 20% of your order doesn't make you poor.

However in Indian restaurant, the restaurant manager or owners don't distribute tips amount among waitress. That is why I hate those owners. In those cases I usually tip cash instead of putting tips on check.

This is an interesting topic. Most Indian/Nepali restaurants give employees fix hourly wage and business owners collect tips. So, in this scenario you not helping waitress/waiter instead selfish business owners. In some cases restaurants hire few part time workers where they pay minimum wage and only full time workers enjoy tips (they keep it and never give to part time workers). Here are few examples in my experience.
a) Indians (not all) - They order cheapest food on menu (like chat, chick peas, hot boiled water (no tap water/ice), red onions on side etc). Obviously their tips amount is small.
b) People from Africa - They barely eat at restaurant, but if they eat, they don't know they should tip. One African guy living in US for 10 years never knew "what is tip"?
c) Nepalese (many) - We tip fairly and quite more understand US culture.

However,
Tips are little biased, if food amount is $100, should we tip $ 15-20?  That amount can be easily if two people eat  appetizer, entree, dessert and have few drinks. If an entree cost $ 50, $10 tips is too much. I think tips should be based on volume of work, not cost of food.

Is it not because the pizza delivery boy uses his car that you should tip him. Having a personal car was a requirement for the job he applied for. Would you tip the electricien who comes to add one more electric outlet at your house because the electricien had to use his own tools? If a waiter is making less than minimum wage it is not for the customer to pay his salary. Is it for the employee to pay him a proper wage. Waiters in states like California make minimum wage, unlike waiters in Texas where they are hardly paid $3/hour. I am againt the concept of tipping. Why would you tip the luggage boy who bings your suitcase to your hotel room if his job in the first place was to bring customers' luggages to their rooms. He is alreay paid by his employee for that. Why would you tip the hair dresser when you have already paid her for your hair cut? Is it that you tip the waiter beacause he did not spit on your food? Well, he is not supposed to spit on your food. Why would you pay someone extra money because he did what he was supposed to do and did not do what he was not supposed to do. Tipping system was created by emplyers so that they could underpay their employees and expect their customers to pay the rest of their salary.

Tipping is a trend and if you are satisfied with his/ her service tip else don't, plain n simple. Dob't be cheap, most nepalese r cheap. Don't matter whether they get minimum wage or not just tip 20% percent else don't go n dine morons. I cut my hair for 5 bucks but i tip 10 coz I think 5 bucks for hair cut is very cheap
