I smile at people when they say I cannot imagine a life without having sex. How can someone even think of a life devoid of sex? In other words, chastity seems extremely boring. I totally agree that life without sex is boring but only in the state of ignorance of totality. When you deeply understand who you are, sex becomes meaningless. That moment when you are firmly grounded on "totality," chastity automatically comes as a spontaneous natural process. According to Swami Venkatesananda, "effort implies disorderly movement of energy in several directions as lust, greed, anger, etc.." In other words, Brahmacarya is not something that one vigorously applies to oneself but is a natural byproduct. Most people have wrong understanding of chastity. They think chastity is refraining oneself from sex physically as an intense practice. They are partially right. This is not the whole picture of Brahmacarya. This state of refraining oneself from sexual contact is the result of satvic mind where mind becomes so pure that it don't even bring any sex related thoughts. When there is not a trace of sexual thoughts in the mind, chastity automatically manifest as a spontaneous natural process. As a result, virya is preserved. Consequnetly, huge amount of vital energy is conserved through which man can achieve so many things in less amount of time. His will power, concentration power increases admirably. So, don't try to impose strict rule of Brahmacarya upon oneself. Rather start with the mind, try to control your thoughts through the practice of Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhayo. These practices cultivates a satvic mind. Satvic mind is like a clear mirror which can reflect the truth as it is. Otherwise, our normal ordinary mind is like a mirror full of dust which reflects partial truths. Finally, may you realize that pure experiencing without polarizing it as the experiencer and the experienced. Om Tat Sat.
