The last thing he remembered was the excruciating pain in his chest that seemed like a stack of needles stuck in his heart. He had difficulty breathing. His vision started to become hallucination of colors. His body must have produced some morphine to numb the pain because he felt himself drifting away. He remembered his daughters, his son, his wife, his girlfriend, his mother and his father and he had drifted into oblivion. He remembered thinking "I guess this is it" as his vision blurred into a red and white halo like when you look at the sun with your eyes closed.

After 6 days of coma, he finally opened his eyes. Just like a new born looks around at the unfamiliar world around him, Paras' looked around drowsily to make sense of his existence. Slowly it all came back. He remembered the pain and his girlfriend Kannika calling the ambulance. As his eyes gained focus, he looked around at his family, which he had once forsaken, sitting all around him. His father, the deposed king, his mother and his wife. They say a man realizes his true identity in times of crisis and it was an emotional moment for him, inspite of always having carried a defensive armor to hide his emotions, today it came out as tears rolled down his cheeks. He was too weak to even wipe them. His wife wiped his tears and held his hand. He attempted a weak smile and then passed out as he did not have much energy left.

The doctor asked the visitors to give him some quiet time to recover. After few hours sleep, he woke up with more energy and more personal time to think. "What am I going to do when Kannika and Himani come face to face because that is the next thing that is going to happen?" He winced thinking of how awkward the situation would be. Kannika had saved him by taking him to the hospital in time. The doctor had mentioned to him that if it had been even half hour late, the chances of survival would have been very little. Paras knew Kannika loved him. Himani had a special place in his heart but their marriage had been more of a ritual than anything else. But as in most Nepali marriage, their love had grown after marriage. As time progressed, and due to Paras' lack of interest in household matters, things had gone bitter between the two.

As he lay in his hospital bed comparing Kannika to Himani, he compared them to the hot Thai massaman curry to the luscious Nepali momo. Although the hot massaman curry had a tingling effect, nothing was like the juicy momo that exploded orgasmically in the mouth.

The last three years in Bangkok, he had tried to run away from his duty as a son, a father, a husband and most importantly his duty to the country. Now as he was lying down in his hospital gown, he felt pangs of guilt for everything he had not done. But he did have a good reason for it. After the Palace Massacre, even though he had no hands in it, the whole country seemed to blame him for it. He had spent weeks and months replaying the whole scene in his head. Only if he had tackled Dipendra then he could have saved so many of his family members. The first few years after the massacre had been mentally excruciating. On top of that, the political situation had flared very badly for the royal family and Paras could not stand living in Nepal where he felt suffocated.

Waking upto a new chance at life, he remembered everything he had gone through. Inspite of everything, he always had deep love for his country and now it got only more important for him to do something about it rather than hiding away in a fairytale land in Bangkok.

It took him 2 more weeks to be able to be discharged from the Hospital. As he read news of Nepal, Chief Justice becoming the new PM, the proud Baburam not resigning, the whole current political scene smelled of corruption self interest rather than the interest of the common Nepali citizen. He rememberd his last trip to Chitwan where he saw scantily clad children bleeding while breaking stones to make gravels. He was truely aware of how much suffering there was in the country. He knew that there was not hope for Nepal in the hands of the politicians and the only hope there was for him to do something about it.

He remembered few of his escapedes from past that were hated by many in the country and he felt like nobody would ever trust him again. But the new zeal he felt now was very strong and he was determined to fight against everything to free Nepal of the dangerous coalition of corrupted politicians that was syphoning off all resources into their own pockets rather than for the Nepali citizens.

As he boarded the plane back to Kathmandu with his family, he made a mental list of people that he would call in for a meeting. Having studied at Budanilkantha, he had a good array of successful friends from very successful families. In addition, he had gathered many types of acquaintances along the way due to his social status. He knew he used to hang out with the wrong type of crowd but he always had access to contact the right kind of people when he needed them.

To be continued...
