Dr. C. K. Raut Detention Extended for Two More Days
Protests for his release continues
Kathmandu, 19 September – Special Court extended the detention of Dr. C. K. Raut by two more days after the scheduled hearing on habeas corpus writ could not take place at the Supreme Court citing lack of time.
Dr. Raut was brought to Kathmandu yesterday, a day before his scheduled hearing on habeas corpus writ and was produced at Special Court where he has been charged with treason. The Special court had ordered a 24 hour detention which was to expire today. When the hearing on the habeas corpus could not take place, Dr. Raut was produced at the Special court where a detention order for 2 days was handed.
Meanwhile, when Dr. Raut was brought to the Supreme Court, large number of his supporters greeted him in the apex court’s premises and chanted slogan for ‘Swaraj Madhesh’- an Independent Madhesh. Supporters across the Madhesh districts continued their peace protest for Dr. C. K. Raut’s release. Rupandehi saw a huge gathering of over a thousand people demanding his immediate release. According to Ram Bikash Chaudhari, a crowd of more than a thousand Madheshis gathered at Parhawa Chowk in Marchwar of Rupandehi to press Dr. C. K. Raut’s release.
Dr. C. K. Raut was arrested from Rangeli of Morang district on Saturday, 13 September while he was returning from addressing a gathering of Madheshis.
Doctor Raut holds a PhD from the Cambridge University, UK and worked as a scientist in the USA prior to returning to Nepal to advocate for the rights of the Madheshis, the native and indigenous people of the southern plains. He has been advocating for freedom of Madhesh through peaceful and non-violent means in the capacity of Central Coordinator of the Alliance for Independent Madhesh (AIM). It should be noted that recently (on 2014 August 21), he was also invited by the Constitutional Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee of the Government of Nepal, to make suggestions on the constitution drafting, and a dialogue is continuing with the Government of Nepal, through various means.
He has published Madhesh ka Itihas, Veer Madhesh, Denial to Defence (An autobiographical anthology) and Madhesh Swaraj.
