China may build rail tunnel under Mount Everest, state media reports

Construction project is believed to be under consideration and is part of proposed extension to link China with Nepal by rail.

China is considering extending a railway line linking the country to Nepal via a tunnel under Mount Everest, according to Chinese state media.

The proposal is the latest in a series of ambitious rail schemes Beijing is reportedly examining. It comes amid scepticism about whether some of the projects will ever get off the ground and at a time of a growing Chinese presence in Nepal, which has caused some concern in rival regional power India.

The Qinghai-Tibet railway already links the rest of China with the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, and beyond, and an extension running as far as the international border is already being planned “at Nepal’s request”, the China Daily quoted a railway expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering as saying.

The project is expected to be completed by 2020, the newspaper cited a Tibetan official as saying. Extending the line would potentially forge a crucial link between China and the huge markets of India. It was raised by the Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi, on a visit to Kathmandu in December, according to Nepalese reports.

“The line will probably have to go through Qomolangma so that workers may have to dig some very long tunnels,” railway expert Wang Mengshu told the China Daily, referring to Mount Everest by its Tibetan name.

Owing to the challenging Himalayan terrain, with its remarkable changes in elevation, trains on any line to Kathmandu would probably have a maximum speed of 75mph (120km/h), he added.

Last year, another state-run newspaper, the Beijing Times, reported that China was considering building a high-speed railway line to the US that would run for 8,080 miles, about 1,865 miles further than the Trans-Siberian railway. It would also include about 125 miles of undersea tunnel, which would be the world’s longest, crossing the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska.

The Times also listed another three international high-speed rail projects that are in various stages of planning and development.

One would run from London via Paris, Berlin, Warsaw, Kiev and Moscow, where it would split into two routes, one of which would run to China through Kazakhstan and the other through eastern Siberia. Another would begin in the far-western Chinese city of Urumqi and then run through Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Turkey to Germany, and the last would begin in the south-west city of Kunming and end in Singapore.

It was unclear to what extent China had consulted any of the other countries whose consent would be required, although it was announced in August that Thailand’s military junta had approved a $23bn (£13.6bn) transport project that would see two high-speed railways link up directly with Kunming, via Laos, by 2021. The line would form part of the planned route to Singapore, which would also run through Malaysia.

The growing Chinese presence in Nepal goes beyond roads and railways, with massive hydroelectric projects, airports and a pilgrimage centre at Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, all slated to receive substantial funding from Beijing.

The number of tourists from China is also rising rapidly. Though overall tourist arrivals by air declined in 2014, visitors from China grew by nearly 20% to more than 71,107. More flight connections are also planned.

Chinese-made goods flood the markets of Kathmandu and Pokhara, the western Nepalese city, and new language schools teaching Mandarin – generously subsidised by Beijing – are increasingly popular.

Indian analysts say Beijing’s influence is a concern but often exaggerated.

“The Chinese are giving it a hard try but the ties with India are very strong,” said G Parthasarathy, a retired senior Indian diplomat and commentator. “There’s a natural geography and history to our relationship [with Nepal]. Yes, they can build a few roads but they can’t employ five million Nepalese. And how many Nepalis are migrating to China? Then there are affinities and culture too.”

The rivalry between the two Asian powers is intense, however, with India scoring some successes recently in pushing back against Beijing’s efforts to extend Chinese influence into areas such as Sri Lanka, traditionally seen as Delhi’s backyard. A change of government in Sri Lanka has led to megaprojects funded by Chinese loans and built by Chinese companies being shelved.

But Indian strategists are most worried about Bejing’s links with India’s western neighbour.

“We are much more concerned about the Chinese relationship with Pakistan, than with Nepal,” said Parthasarathy.

Chinese plans to expand the rail network in Tibet have come under criticism from rights groups including the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), which has warned of the project’s “dangerous implications for regional security and the fragile ecosystem of the world’s highest and largest plateau”.

“The Chinese government’s claim that rail expansion on the plateau simply benefits tourism and lifts Tibetans out of poverty does not hold up to scrutiny and cannot be taken at face value,” the ICT president, Matteo Mecacci, said last year.

u get paid for letting them use your for their trade .and since the chinese and the indians are the two of the biggest economies of the world, their trade worth hundreds of billions would be done through nepalese land.
in similar cases, many countries in eastern europe earn lots of money be simply letting the gas pipelines pass through.

Is this a joke, like seriously!!. I got a good laugh just by hearing such conceptualization or,is it just the Chinese way of April fooling Nepali folks. The train will trail-blaze under the Highest peak of this planet while brave mountaineer would be pacing their way to the top--an instant woow-- but,at second thought, this is just a crazy consideration.

The Chinese train has already arrived in Nuwakot@Kerung,which till date, has no fruitful delivery with vacant containers and "we" are requesting them to mine under sacred Everest, completely forgetting the Kerung station, leaving it desolate and wasted, like we got another inflated dream to keep us amused.I am not saying it is unworkable;it surely is possible to circuit under mountains and hills like Swiss does, but at what cost? The tourists would just hop in a train in Chinese station and would arrive and depart from Chinese territory, troubling the whole Himalayan ambience, leaving Nepal with little profit and invisible misadventure.

If they got that much aim and moniii, they can certainly assist in making a fast-track from Lahsa to Kathmandu, bringing bountiful of goods to Kathmandu, and if they like to work even more, like they always do,they can draw a track with a final destination being Dhangadi, linking many districts and almost whole terai, making trains whiz in total flat plains.

Everest,Buddha,Pasupati,Pokhara,Khanchanjanga,Rara,Lumbini--these are our treasures and we must think lucidly and loudly if any foreign design are being approached on these valuables;could be anything tho...a ploy or a progess.

The news is very strange to me. May be Chinese wanted to see reactions from Nepal and specially from India by spreading such funny news. Usually chinese do that type of opinion gathering mission.
1. Mount Everset is not above kathmandu between the border of Nepal and Tibet. Mount Everest is in Sagarmatha zone.
2. If they want to dig a tunnel below mount Everest to reach Kathmandu the tunnel will be long, expensive and useless. They can reach Kathmandu fast by using Kodari high way or other highway vai Rasuwa.
3. There is another highway under discussion which reaches Rajbiraj or nearby from Chinese border.

4. On Chinese side there are many roads, they just have to build north south roads in nepal. One is already there. One is under consruction and third one is under consideation.
If the Chinese want to reach Delhi, faster building tunnel under mount Everest is useless because Delhi is closer from western Nepal and Mount Everest is in eastern Nepal.

5. Only benefit from digging a tunnel below Everest is geological investigation of area for different minerals , and fossil fuel/gas etc etc.

6. Watching Indian reaction is even funnier. India China share more than 3000 km border and china has build heavily on chinese side of the border, they dont need Nepal to spy or attck India.
7. China have satellites and other devices spying on India.

8.There are lots of Indians who will sell any secrets if they get good money.

9. This is not 1975 or earlier where one country interestd to grab the land of another country, Now economic stability is important that land

10. Being transit for goods between India and China, nepal can make only be arround 100 to 200 million not more than that. we have to be very carefull here. If the transit is by road, there will be thousands of trucks on road creating environmental problem.

11. Transit using trains is not that bad but nepal will get only samll share of transit route.
shipping cost of one Container from Shanghai to Mumbai by sea is approx 2000$, and transit time is about 23 days. Via Nepal transit time could be only 10 days. If the cost of shipping is same then nepal will get only about 200/container. If 1000 containers/day shipped via nepal .I guess only 10% of land route from shanghai to mumbai lies inside Nepal.
12. 1 train carrying 100 containers, ( 100, 40 ft long containers makes one mile long train if gap between containers also included). New train every 2 hrs, 24/7/365 day soperation with no down time Nepal will get about 73 million.

13. This is rough calculation but plausible
14. If someone is expert please dont hesitate to share

China-Nepal rail tunnel through Himalayas ‘largely a pipe dream’, says engineering boss

Cost and engineering problems would be huge and the tunnel is unlikely to be built any time soon, state media reports

PUBLISHED : Thursday, 16 April, 2015, 11:47am
UPDATED : Thursday, 16 April, 2015, 12:12pm

A suggested plan to build a rail tunnel through the Himalayas to connect China and Nepal would cost at least 10 billion yuan (HK$12.6 billion) and is unlikely to be built in the coming years, state media reported.

Wang Mengshu, chief engineer with the China Railway Tunnel Group, said that based on past experience with large infrastructure projects in extreme environments such as the high Tibetan plateau, the budget for any tunnel would be 100 million yuan per kilometre and that is probably an underestimate, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

“Even at that price most construction companies are unwilling to do it,” he was quoted as saying.

China’s government suggested in 2008 that it might extend the rail link from Qinghai province to Tibet on to neighbouring Nepal, but no formal proposals or route have been drawn up, the report said.

Wang Mengshu, chief engineer with the China Railway Tunnel Group, says the huge technical difficulties could be overcome, but only with major political and financial backing. Photo: SCMP PicturesThe China Daily quoted Wang earlier this month as saying that the scheme was under consideration and the report was widely picked by overseas media.

Any tunnel through the Himalayas would face huge engineering challenges, Wang told Xinhua.

Many railways under construction in China were short on cash and ambitious projects such as a Himalayan tunnel would not be approved anytime soon, he was quoted as saying.

Fatal accidents among workers building a tunnel were also another major concern, the report said.

During the construction of the Qinghai to Tibet railway more than 100 workers died in accidents.

Working at high altitudes in Tibet meant that workers would also have to be supplied with oxygen, a further logistical problem to tackle, the report said.

Suggestions from media reports that a tunnel could be built by 2020 were incorrect, but if there was the political and financial commitment to build the project, any engineering problems could be overcome, said Wang.

The railway would significantly increase trade and tourism between China and Nepal, he said.

If it goes thru, they should make a station right under Mt Everest in case they plant to build the elevator from the station express to the peak of Everest.
