Nepali students on campus with urgent financial need due to the devastating earthquake in Nepal.
The Emergency Student Fund (ESF) of the Institute of International Education (IIE) is issuing a call for nominations from United States colleges and universities who have Nepali students on campus with urgent financial need due to the devastating earthquake in Nepal.
IIE’s Nepal-ESF will provide emergency grants of up to $2,000 to Nepali students nominated by their U.S. host colleges and universities who are unable to continue or complete their degree program in the U.S. due to serious financial difficulties precipitated by the natural disaster in their home country.
Accredited U. S. campuses are invited to nominate up to 5% or 3 (whichever is greater) of the Nepali students at their institutions for whom help is needed to continue their studies in the United States. Funds could be used for educational expenses over the summer or for the fall semester 2015. IIE expects U.S. institutions nominating Nepali students to help address the students’ urgent financial needs through tuition waivers, scholarships, and other forms of assistance.
International Student Advisers or other campus officials are invited to submit applications to IIE using the nomination form at the link indicated above and below. Nepali students cannot apply directly and should consult their International Student adviser for assistance.
Deadline: May 15, 2015, 5:00pm EDT - Please nominate as soon as possible. Decisions will be sent to the students and nominators by Friday, May 29, 2015.

Since we anticipate that the need may exceed funding currently available in the Institute’s Emergency Student Fund, we are also seeking donations from interested individuals and foundations. The goal is to provide Nepali students who are enrolled in U.S. degree programs and unable to access funds from home with enough support so that they can continue their education in the United States during the summer and/or fall semester 2015 and not have to drop out of their programs prematurely. Support from IIE’s Nepal-ESF, combined with host university support, is meant to provide students with a temporary respite so that they might continue their education and eventually return to Nepal to help their country, communities, and families recover from the devastating earthquake.
Eligibility
To be considered for Nepal-ESF awards, nominated students must:
Demonstrate to campus officials that their financial ability to continue their U.S. studies has been seriously disrupted by the earthquake and associated problems in Nepal.
Be currently enrolled in a degree program and registered for summer/fall 2015.
Be in good academic standing, as defined by the host campus.
Have the appropriate non-immigration visa status (U.S. citizens or permanent residents are ineligible to apply).
U.S. host campuses nominating students for Nepal-ESF awards are expected to also provide some emergency assistance to the nominated students, through tuition waivers, full or partial scholarships, housing stipends, loans, work study, or other forms of support.
Application Instructions
Accredited United States campuses are invited to nominate up to 5% or 3 (whichever is greater) of their students for whom help is needed immediately for the summer and/or fall semester 2015. Nominators must download and complete a separate nomination form from this site for each student and email the form to ESF@iie.org.
If nominating several students, the nominator should rank the applicants based on financial need, with “1” being the highest and “5” being the lowest level of need.
The grant nominations must be submitted to IIE by 5:00pm EDT on Friday, May 15th, 2015. Awards will be announced by Friday, May 29th.
