5 PLACES FOODIES WILL LOVE IN KATHMANDU

Bricks Café

Bricks Café serves some of the best wood-fired pizza in Kathmandu, as well as other international and Nepali dishes. Although the building was damaged in the earthquake of 2015, it underwent renovations and is now better than ever. The multi-story brick mansion and prayer-flag adorned gardens provide many different spaces for a relaxed drink and meal. Conveniently situated on Pulchowk Road in Patan, you can shop for high-quality local handicrafts from the nearby boutiques either before or after visiting Bricks Café.

Newa Lahana

Newa Lahana is commonly said to serve the best Newari food in the whole Kathmandu Valley. It is situated in Kirtipur, a perched high in the Valley’s south-west, which is an old Newari town. Although it is a simple place, the Newari food is extremely authentic and tasty. Newari cuisine is known to be particularly spicy, so come prepared! You can even enjoy views of the mountains and the whole city from the rooftop dining area, on a good day.

Krishnarpan

Located in the boutique luxury Dwarika’s Hotel, Krishnarpan is possibly the finest all-round dining experience in Kathmandu. The wait-staff dress in traditional clothing from Nepal’s various ethnic groups, and the food is equally diverse. You will be provided with a personalised menu describing each item on your six-course menu. Eating at Krishnarpan is not only about the exquisite food, but about a full cultural experience.

Chez Caroline

While the vast variety of Nepali food is obviously a highlight of staying in Kathmandu, there is also excellent international food to be had. Chez Caroline is a beautiful French restaurant is located in Baber Mahal Revisited, a former Rana palace that has been converted into a high-end shopping and dining complex. While the food is perfectly prepared and almost entirely French, the location reminds you that you’re still in Kathmandu—sit in a brick courtyard with bronze lions and other sculptures looking on. The ideal place for a special occasion.

Right in the heart of Thamel, the two floors of this vegetarian Israeli restaurant is always busy. It is one of the few places in Kathmandu to find authentic Middle Eastern specialties. The platter is big enough for two and comes with tasty baba ganoush, tahini, hummus, pita and so on. The mint lemonades are perfect refreshment on a hot Kathmandu day, and its central location means it’s a great place to stop for lunch or dinner while busy running errands, or just hanging out, in Thamel.
