Forwarded from Houston Nepali Community

With heart full of sorrow, I would like to inform you and the Nepalese community in Houston and elsewhere that Basanta Sunar passed away yesterday peacefully and left all of us for heavenly abode. Basanta was in the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and fighting for his life for the last 8 months, after being diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. After going through various treatment plans in different hospitals in Houston, his condition worsened. The doctors had stopped all interception type treatments and he was kept in pain management only.

The hardest part about this whole situation is that he has 3 young children ( Bandana Sunar- age 15, Mimosae Sunar-age 18 and Sashant Sunar-age 8, but says he is 10) who immigrated to the US only a few weeks ago to see their father. It really breaks my heart to see the kids in such a difficult and heartbreaking situation.

Basanta immigrated to US about four years ago. His only dream for coming to US was to bring his family and provide them with quality education in the USA. The children did get to the USA, but, now are without their beloved father, their future looks very difficult. I have known the family only for about 2 months or so, but it feels like I have known them for long time and they are part of our family.

I would like to request Nepalese community in Houston and elsewhere to pray for Basanta's children and rest of the family and provide any financial as well as other help or guidance that they may need. Without any income and only expenses for the treatment and so on, I know that Basant's family is financially stretched and needs help. The family would really appreciate any help that Nepalese community can provide.
More than once, Basanta mentioned to me that he wanted to be cremeted in Nepal and his family plans to fulfill his final wish. We are trying to take his body to Nepal per his wishes.

In addition to being a lovely father to his children, Basant was also a singer and has written dozens of songs. In one lovely song, his daughter, Bandana has provided the vocal. His story was recently published in Himalya Khabar as well. Please refer to the link below.
