AHMEDABAD: Social media sites like Facebook might be popular for sharing posts and pictures among friends, but the platform helped city Childline (1098) track a girl's parents to a distant village in Nepal. The girl reunited with the family last week.
According to the Childline Ahmedabad officials, they had received a message on July 26 about a girl found from Udaipur through national network of the helpline. The message, containing photograph of the girl, mentioned that she got separated from her mother accidentally and now could not say for sure about her native place.

"We first decided to approach Bihar police as the girl was not sure whether the village is in India or Nepal. They inquired on their own and got back saying they had no information of the said village or the missing girl. We then decided to try our luck in Nepal," said Binal Patel, city coordinator for Childline.

With no direct contact with the authorities, the helpline officials searched for the said village and approached a page maintained by citizen group from Duhabi city in Sunsari district of Nepal. The officials decided to take a chance and sent a message to the group, seeking help to locate the said village and check whether any girl is reported missing.
"To our pleasant surprise, the group administrator replied promptly and shared his number for communication. We had a word about the case and we also shared the girl's photograph with the village's name. The village was located about 45 kilometres from Duhabi but the volunteers travelled to the interior village, met the locals and tracked the girl's family," said Patel.

It was a teary-eyed phone call from the girl to her father when the volunteers helped the two connect. Logistics were arranged from both the sides after which the girl finally returned home in third week of August.
