Hi all. I am a sophmore in college. I had always avoided using braces to correct my teeth back in Nepal. However coming here I found that in the United States a good smile is vital for social success and career advancement. Due to this reason I have decided to use braces or whatever needed to correct my teeths which have an overbite. However I found that the costs are prohibitively expensive. I was wondering if any of you know a cheap financing option so that by the time I graduate and go for job interviews and all that I will have the right corporate smile.

Guys and gals advice is greatly appreciated.

I would also like to ask another thing. I will be going to Nepal this winter so is it wise to do all the expensive work like tooth extraction and things like that in Nepal after consultation with a doctor here.

Has anyone done something similar. I

aaaanch!! Sounds like you are in exact situation I was in a year ago. I was pretty comfortable with my teeth althought they were overbitten and what not. But I was pretty concerned about cleanin' up and cavities. So, I went to a doctor for a regular teeth checkup and clean up and ended up with braces. I've never given a damn about good smile but when my doctor recommended me braces, I just couldn't resist. So, Yes I've got the braces and I am sure I am pretty older than you. :P It's not fun gettin' braces when you are not a small kid.

I'd gone thru bunch of tooth extractions before I got the braces (which were painful). Right now I have got the braces and I have to take extra care of it like brushing umpteenth times a day, avoiding certain foods, putting on ugly lookin rubberbands over the braces urghh!!! annoyin'... the things that I thought I were not capable of doing ever in my life. Now, here I am, it's been a year and my braces has become a part of my life, I don't really feel like I have braces, I brush constantly and do what every my doc. tells me to do. The best and encouraging and exciting part is you can't believe your eyes how quickly those teeth shape up. It's not just about money, it's about discipline and patience. Are you up for it? If yes, then go for it. It's good to get it done in time.

I don't know much about financing options. I think it depends on the doctors. About mine, I pay it monthly. It's affordable, no interest, nothing. I just have to go visit my doc monthly, thats when I pay my fee. Thats about it.

The most important and the most intriguing thing about your posting was the tooth extraction. I am sure you will have to extract bunch of teeth (depends how many). If you have really made up your mind about getting braces, I'd recommend you to get all the extractions done in Nepal. You will save lots of money and time. I've been thru that and tell you what, it's not cheap, and god forbid if your tooth has to be extracted surgically (not a biggie tho), it is financially back-breaking. They don't care where you have done your tooth extractions tho.

Phew, I am excited coz I finally found someone adult who is getting braces. :) Get it done, it's fun. At least for 2 years, you will have a "silver" smile. :)

me_curious I would advise you to first consult your orthodontist before going to nepal. my wife went through a similar expereince. she had teeth extracted and braces in place in npeal. but when she was back overseas, we found it hard for orthodontist who could follow her treatment overseas. the orthodontist didn't agree with the plan of the orthodontist in nepal. more over, we forgot to bring the x-rays and the model so my wife had to start everything from scratch of what was already a 1/3 finished job in nepal. that left a big dent to our pocket coz we were not covered for dental stuff. also be aware that there is a lot of controversies regarding teeth extraction. some orthodontis prefer to extract teeth different than others.

personally, i didn't like this whole business of braces given the fact that it is so problematic from what you eat to how you take care of it. but again, it's matter of feeling good about urself so I supported my wife's decision. bottom line, do ur homework before u go back to nepal. it might seem very simple, but u will realise orthodontists are bit fussy on touching what others have done.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestion.

hey Kalankisthan I would greatly appreciate if you could give me the actual amount of money that you spent. What are your monthly payments ? Since I am a student I have to decide whether I can afford all this. Obviously I do not want to ask my parents a huge sum of money for the same braces that I had avoided using. Therefore I would highly appreciate the actual money that you guys spent.

OZ-Guy I was thinking of doing all the extraction in Nepal after consulting with a Orthodontist here. Like offshoring all the work that can be done abroad to a cheaper place. Ideally I would like to consult the Orthodontist, make a plan for dental treatment. Then while I am in Nepal do the extractions and fitting of the braces and all the expensive stuff and do the maintenance care in the United States. Do you think the ego of Orthodontist would allow for such a thing ?

Anway I am dead set on acquiiring that corporate smile.

Too bad if I had continued my aspiration in the sciences I would probably not go through all this trouble.

me_curious, shouldn't be a problem if you work out a plan and follow that in nepal and come back to US for braces. it's just some orthodontist have different techniques - not ego stuff. i am in australia so i assume it wont be helpful for ya to calculate on ur costs. it costs us about Aus $5,500 - $6,000 for the whole commitments. I would say US $4,500 if you convert it just for your idea. Perhaps, Kalankisthan would be able to give u the exact cost. i would imagine it's more expensive in US.
