Say, the temperature of a moving object is a function of speed of the object and time at which you observe it. You have the curve that shows how the temperature varies with time, but you know that the effect of speed is also combined in the curve. How would you extract the effect of speed from it?

Do mathmetical modelling. If you have two functions that describe these relationships, you whould be able to solve the third relationship. For example:

Known:

1. Temp = function(Speed, Time)
2. Temp = function(Time)

Solve the third variable. If the relationship is not in first order, you might have to use some imperical relationship or numerical method but it should work.

easy. the best way to visualize this is to plot the 3-D function of speed (z) versus time(x) and temp (y). You will get a suface in 3-D. For any given time (say value of x = 4), think of the suface x=4 in 3D. This will be a plane. Think of the intersection of this plane and the earlier surface, and the curve on this intersection tells you how temp varies with speed for time x=4. Of course, this curve will be different for different values of time. to obtain a better answer, why don't you post the exact equations, and i can think about whether the effects of speed and time can be separated out. If this is a real-world physical system, then chances are, the variables cannot be separated out...
