Confused, alas my Hanuman, I can only see a Bhakta in you and what you do with your cyber-illusive Bhakti is your business!

And, like DP, I wish you best of luck in your (futile) quest for Sitara, "sigh"!. You might wanna listen to Dyam!

Back to the topic at hand:
One important Laxan: A guy who can take "No" for an answer, with dignity--without whining, grumbling, blustering and/or lashing out!

Definitely, a rare quality there.

hahaha, Sitara, you finally get to have your revenge .. ehh :)

, you can think whatever makes you feel good, .. but we all know the truth, am not your BHAKTA...:)

yes, back to topic

one most important laxan for a girl is not to think too highly of herself...

definately a rare, rare, rare, and rarest quality...

Dear Friends,
I had seen this thread some time ago; to me the heading sounds like street's name I didn't check it (mostly I read the threads related to Science and Dharma :) ). Today while I was passing through the titles of the Sajha postings, I found this thread with so many postings. A curiosity arose in me to check it out, and I did. It was not about 32 Laxan St., but it was about 32 best qualities. I know most of the people don?t know what 32 Lakshanas are, so I decide to post.

Pleae read this posting, it is worth reading. Read one pragraph one day and complete it :). Sometime from fun we reach to very sensative area, very serious area. It happened here. I think the origionator of this thread may not know how important, and valuable the question is. She mightnot expect the answer will be such comprehensive.

I have read about those "Battish Lakshans", in Dirgha Nikaya time and again. As I read this thread, I thought it is good to spend some time for the welfare of friends, I searched through google and found them in net. Since some explanation is necessary, so I am writing some background before posting them.

I will be posting them shortly.

Bisati Bisat Seta Sudanto, Hingula Baddha Suratta Sujivo!
Supati ta Samma Supado, Yesahi Tuhhey Pita NaraSimhho!!
-NaraSimha Gatha
One who has twenty (up) - twenty (down) white teeth, very long red tong, well leveled sole, the superior human is your father.

This is one of the verses that Yeshodhara said to Rahul while she was introducing his father to him for the first time. Rahul 11, had only heard of his father, never seen. He couldn't recognize him among the 500 yellow robed monks taking their alms in his palace and went to his mother to ask how his father looked like.

This verse may have little bit (one or two words) shift from the original one because I couldn't exactly recall it. But I knew the verse and its meaning so I completed, forgive me.

Fourty Teeth, very long tong, well leveled sole are three of the thirty two signs of great person's body, that Yeshodhara, wife of Siddartha Gautam stated in above mentioned verse.

This thread started with a question asking about 32 Lakshana, the best qualities of a woman, which is absolutely wrong. These are the best qualities of a perfect Human. Actually they are not qualities, they are sign in the human body, that implies that the person will be/is perfect. This was the gift of Vedic Yogis; they were the great scientist, the great discoverer. I have been reading Veda these days, but haven't come across this chapter yet. May be I will never find this chapter because somebody has already told me that it is not there. Anyway, we lost lot many things as time passed, but if you really investigate, explore, it is not impossible to find them.

When ten learned Vaidic Brahman saw the newborn of king Suddhodhana, nine of them raised two fingers whereas Kaundanya, the youngest of them raised only one. King asked them what the meaning of raising fingers was. Nine of them said if he stayed household the will be an emperor, but if he renounced he will be Buddha, the fully awakened one. Kaudannya, the youngest Brahmin confidently said he will renounce and will find out the path of liberation (29 years later when he heard that Siddhartha left palace, he followed him like a shadow with the hope that one day Siddhartha will be Buddha, the enlightened one and he will teach him the path of liberation. The prediction came true, and Kaudannya became Buddha's first enlightened disciple). Do you know how had they predicted that the new born of Suddhodhan will be Buddha? This new born had all these thirty two signs in his body. They had read in Veda, a person who had all these thirty two Lakshanas ie signs would either be an emperor or a fully enlightened one.

In Pali literature we can see the life of those days, at the time of Buddha. In Veda there used to be a part called "Lakshna Viddya" which was also known as "Anga Viddya", scholars used to predict future of a person with his/her body. It is not something like "Jyotish Viddya". If you do some research, you will find, Hindus adapted Jyotish Sastra from Chaina and Greek. Astroglogy was considered first developed and flourished in China more than 5000 years ago. Greek people developed it independently much later, and if you make comparative study of Hindu and Greek astrology, you can find so many Greek words in Hindu Jotish Sastra, which don?t have Sanskrit root at all. Later on, during Islamic empire in Babylon, Hindu scholars bridges Chainese astrology with Greek astrology that was preserved by Muslims. Anyway, this is another direction where I don?t want to go. But my point is, now we lost ? Anga Viddya? which used to be independent. I gave you one example of Siddhartha, here are some more examples.

Babari Brahmin 100, used to be head priest of Prasenjit, the king of Kosala, had four Lakshanas in his body out of thirty two. He left his responsibilities of head priest and was living life of recluse with hundreds of disciples. He heard of Buddha and sent his sixteen best disciples with the leadership of Aswojit (?). He said to them "My disciples, I have heard that there is a perfect person with all thirty two signs in his body, he is recluse and now enlightened. According to our literature, a person with all these thirty two sign if a householder will be emperor, if recluse will be enlightened. I am too old, can't walk, it is great fortune even to hear about such person what to talk to see him. Go my disciples, check the validity, and ask these questions". He sent sixteen questions with them, they found all thirty two signs in his body and eventually Babari accepted Buddha's teaching with all his disciples.

Puskasati Brahman, sent his disciples with the leadership of Ambasta, to check thirty two Lakshanas in Buddha's body. Finding true of all the Lakshanas he became Buddha's lay disciple.

Mahakssap was very rich Brahman who also had (I think) four Lakshanas. Later on he became monk and one of the prominent figures of Buddha's teaching, .

I have heard that in modern days, Mohan C. Gandhi had one of the 32 Lakshanas; that was very long hands. He could touch his knee by a finger tip in stretched standing position, I am not sure of this, I have to ask this to some one who studied Gandhi well.

Many other examples can be found about these 32 Lakshanas in Pali literature. Now question arises, how these Lakshanas are associated with woman? I would like to analyze like this. Thirty two Lakshanas represents the perfection of human. "Battish Lakshan Le Ukta", has become a phrase which means complete, perfect. Nothing can be added and nothing can be subtracted. So people use that word for perfect things. "Battis Lakshan le ukta nari" means a perfect woman, a good qualitative woman, physically, morally, mentally, from all aspects.

Here are those 32 Lakshanas.

Main 32 Signs [lakkha.na mahaapurisa 32]

1.supati.t.thapaado: feet with a level sole (the Buddha would have an even pace -- not like those who wear down their shoes unevenly -- such a sole would spread the weight of His body evenly)

2 he.t.thapaadatalesuu cakkani jaataani: 1,000 spoked wheel marks on soles (such marks would make the Buddha's hands and feet infinitely flexible -- unlike our hands and feet which can flex only in one or two directions because there are only two or three lines on our palms)

3. aayatapa.nhi: projecting heels-- the heels were not round in shape but more oval (spreads weight and gives extra leverage for strength to the foot)

4. diigha"ngulii: literally this means big fingers, but in fact it refers to the fingers & toes of the Buddha being of even length (makes the hands and feet very strong by comparison to our own for whom all our fingers and toes are of different lengths)

5. mudutalahatthapaado: hands & feet soft skinned (this is not to say that the Buddha was not strong. Normally we associate hunks of taut muscle with strength -- but also soft flesh can be full of muscles)

6. jaalahatthapaado: netlike lines on palms and soles (this is similar to no.2 -- it allows the feet and hands to be infinitely flexible -- it is not people of ancient times who had such a feature -- even Kuhn Yay Thongsuk Samdaengpan had such a feature on her hands which perhaps explains why she was so resiliant, even at a senior age when travelling to give teachings around the country)

7. ussa"nkhapaado: high raised ankles (this feature is similar to the way the legs of a horse are built -- it gives exceptional strength, leverage and agility to the leg)

8. nimigasadisaja"ngho: taught calf muscles like antelope (again this explains why the Buddha could be so strong -- because his legs were strong like those of an antelope -- rather than being flacid like those of a buffalo)

9.thitako va anonamanto: even standing without bending down, the Buddha could touch his knees (such proportions for a person are in fact the ideal -- not like Asians who have a long body but short legs or at the other extreme negros and caucasians who have a long body and long legs)

10.kosohitavatthguyho: sexual organs concealed by sheath (the advantage of this is not to risk bringing offence to anyone even when naked)

11. suva.n.nava.n.n.o: bright golden-coloured complexion (such golden skin has the advantage of being sensitive to the touch)

12. sukhumacchavii: skin so fine no dust can attach (this is unlike the rough skin of a reptile to which all manner of dirt attaches. In fact the Buddha managed to achieve what women and sportsmen still try to achieve, but without all the effort!)

13. ekekalomo: body hair separate with one hair per pore (not like some people who have whole tufts of hair coming from each pore).

14. uddhaggalomo: bluish body hair curls clockwise

15. brahmujugatto: upright stance like a god (such a stance gives an exceptional sense of balance and a firm stance)

16. sattussado: flesh undinted and convex in seven places (these seven places comprise: the back of the hands [2], the upper side of the feet [2], the shoulders [2] and the neck [1])

17. siihapubba.d.dhakaayo: lion-like chest (such a chest allows strong breathing and better metabolism than a normal person)

18. piitantara.mso: flesh on back undinted (not like some people whose back looks like fishbones)

19. nigrodhaparima.n.dalo: equal distance hand-to-hand & head-to-toe (such a proportion allows one to sit comfortably for meditation, without one's legs sticking out)

20. samva.d.dakkhandho: neck rounded and smooth (the shape of the Buddha's neck was perfect like a tube or organ pipe and is the reason for the melodious voice he had)

21. rasaggasaggii: sensative taste-buds (allows one to pick up the nutrients from even the poorest of foods and is why the Buddha could survive for 49 days on seven lumps of rice after his enlightenment or during the time when he had to spend his rainy-season in a place where there was famine)

22. siihahanu: lion-like jaw (such a jaw is necessary to accommodate the 40 teeth of mark 23.)

23. cattaa.liisadanto: 40 teeth (most people have only 32 teeth and normally some are missing too. Such a set of forty teeth is permanent throughout life -- not like ours which change from milk teeth > adult teeth > false teeth!)

24. samadanto: evenly-spaced teeth

25.avira.ladanto: gapless teeth

26. sukkadanto: crystal canine teeth. Some people ask how when, as we sometimes find in the scriptures, the Buddha and Ananda are walking along, how Ananda could know that the Buddha has noticed something and is smiling about it. Normally, Ananda would walk directly behind the Buddha, but the reason he could know that the Buddha was smiling is because even just the parting of his lips, light would eminate from his canine teeth)

27. pahutajivho: large, long tongue (large enough to cover his whole face and long enough to lick ears -- contributes to melodious sound of the Buddha and accommodates exceptional tastebuds)

28. brahmassaro hiravikabhaa.nii: god-like voice (this is a particularly melodious sort of voice -- collective fruit of the shape of his neck, teeth and tongue -- not like a person who is having problems with their teeth)

29. abhiniilanetto: bluish-black eyes

30. gopamukho: eyes innocent like a calf

31. u.n.naa loma bhamukantare jaataa: white cotton-wool soft wisp of hair in centre of brow (Indians respect this very highly and if they don't have one will draw one in as a 'caste mark')

32. u.nahiissiiso: brow & face, especially the join between the two, are excellently smooth

Turbine ji don't say that. Just because you post on Sajha doesn't mean you have no social life. I mean may be some people don't have social life so they come to Sajha to
spend their time. Other people come just to surf and have fun. You know what I am saying ???................. Peace Out...............
