It was a discerning eye that directed me to ?Prerana.? Merci, cherie.

In my mind?s eye, it was the Borgata, in the misty distance, that formed the backdrop for events that unfolded. An image that floated in the back of my mind as Prerana?s story played out.

It was with suprising clarity the pungent odors of New York?s streets rose up to assail me. Whereon, I was gripped by Dipika?s masterful use of the indestructible cockroach as a metaphor of the tenacious immigrant. At the end, I distinctly heard, like the pop of a squashed cockroach, the ill-fated Prerana grisly end, ground under the callous heel of Fate.

A superb effort!

Deepika... surely a real nice peice in the guild. You got an aptitude to keep the mood and the pace 'under water'. Kept me brooding a long while after reading. The people are real, aren't they? Made me wonder because of the way you deal with the characters with so much familiarity.

Anyways, keep writing. G'luck!

What's wrong with a work of fiction being depressive ?

Unless the work is particularly meant to be a reading therapy for the patients of depression, there is no point denouncing or praising a literary work based on whether it provokes sadness or happy thoughts in readers. Critics look at the artistic value of the work, not at the type of emotion depicted. Otherwise Frank Kafka would not be the Kafka.

That said, I do find Kafkasque elements in Dipika's stories. Her characters are imprisoned in their own small space despite living supposedly in a world of opportunities. They are lost, confused and disparate. They are struggling inwardly and this inward struggle is what does not allow them to attach with anybody emotionally. They look at themselves as either victims or victims-to-be, users or objects to be used. Yes, the stories are depressive but certainly with artistic value from an emerging writer with a great potential.

I certain look forward to reading more works depicting a variety of human emotions, moods and situations from Dipika, a serious student with rebellious attitude, unsuppressed curiosity and dreams and, I should add, a great sense of humor (I had an honor of meeting her in person, yes in DC, before I knew she is a fellow Sajhaite !)

And I think I am among the very few priviledged to have known real Dipika. Hagi Dipika ?

Sajhabasi haru ko majha dhak lagaaihaleko ni !

So many compliments at a time?I'm in cloud no. nine already?hold my breath, hold me breath?almost choked! uhum! :)

Nepe ji,

If my writings were ever to reach a wider public someday, I will hire you to critique them! :) 20% of my income lau ta.

I was taken aback by your comments; yes, unconsciously or consciously my efforts were to depict the "immigrant" living in big opportune cities with little identity of her own. The 'us' that I fondly likely to call, this class who gets fascinated by glittering capitalism, yet remains at the bottom of it, always, and gets grinded by cultural shock and personal grievances both at once.

And certainly, maile sajha ma post garnu paryo bhanera kammar kasya pani Nepe ji ko kavita ra gajal haru padera ho?specially after the acclaimed Tasbir Sitara Ko?got jealous :P

Blank, I do not ditto copy the person's character (that'd be boring), but somewhere at the back of my mind, they are lurking?I could have met him/her 6 yrs ago in Nepal, but bits and pieces will be hanging somewhere, the powers of mind? ;) and the plot is completely made up, again with bits and pieces of truth hidden in places?like every other fiction!

Thank you everyone, certainly these inspirations should lead me somewhere?

SITARA,
Was looking forward to reading your story in the Guild. Your posts in the various threads have made good reading. I was dissappointed that your wit and bite don't transfer well to prose. Your story was a bit heavy on the cliches and light around the main character. There was so much potential there and you let it slip. Hope your future efforts are worth the read.

Well, let's NOT over-indulge ourselves in unfounded mutual adulations. Much like Sel Roti's remark, it is good to have constructively critical reviews more than "wah-wahs".

Hoina ra?
