A relative of mine in Nepal has asked me to bring a cell phone from the U.S.

Has anyone bought a cell phone in the U.S. that will work in Nepal (I am guessing the system there is GSM)? Any advise about how and where I can buy would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Any phone, except the 3G ones will work. And oh yes, if its a contract phone (locked to a particular network), it needs to be unlocked. Unlocking costs around Rs. 1200 in Nepal (based on info of 3 months ago).

Goodlock :)

Gaule ji -- You can buy any tri-band or quad-band phone, but make sure freq is 900/1900 Mhz. You can get plenty of selection from Cingular or T-Mobile. Your Best bet is Motorola V551 from cigular; which is loaded with features - QuadBand, Camera, Bluetooth, Speaker phone. If you are looking for inexpensive phone check Sony Ericsson T610 but signal quality of this cell is not that great - still features is good and you can get it $75-$99 after activation, may be free. Also Motorola V300 is not bad choice - battery life is awesome and it is triband with VGA Camera from T-Mobile.

You can get all these phones on damn good price if you activate with the service. But my understanding is you don't want to activate service, right? Alright here is a trick- Go to individually own Cellphone store (T-Mobile, Cingular), not Corporate outlet. Most of the time individual store offer phone for free.

Activate phone in the store. Don't worry you have 14 days to try it out and cancel the service. After couple of days you can go ahead and cancel your service. You may have to pay activation fee of $35 (T-mobile doesn't charge). Though you may get some phone for free , store may charge you tax of 16.50. Whatever is the price don't use your credit card to make payment, pay with cash. Here is the catch, if store find you terminating the service and not returing the phone and store has your credit card no# they may charge you for phone about $350- so do not pay with credit card.

How to cancel ? Call customer service 1-800 no#. Tell them anything -like - you dont have reception in your house or whatever. Customer service will help you cancel ur service. But in worst case scenario they may if you are calling from same store or not... tell them you are calling from the store and sales rep is infront of you. Have your fren (anybody) ready pretend as a sales rep. Sometime Cust Rep may ask for store ID. Check in your contract paper you will find Store ID. You are done...

Again now any phones from any providers are locked, you can't use any other SimCard unless you unlock the phone. You can goto www.unlockmyphonenow.com. Follow the steps you will get unlock code within 30 mins. To unlock Motorola phone it will cost you $20.

If you wise you can close this deal for less then $100. But still -depends what kind of phone you are buying.

Good Luck dude.

Man, if I have to do all the things PISCES is saying, I would really consider DYAMN's idea of tiger's pee pee in return.

pisces, you work at tmobile customer care? what is said is exactly what i would do except if you cancel service within buyer's remorse (14 days) you HAVE to return the phone that you got for free! so there... the spoiler. the credit card thing is right. but they also need your SSN to set up an account. so act wisely or it may mess up ya credit.
and as far as the phones go DO NOT buy MOTO V300. that is crap. tri-band GSM- Nokia 6800 , Samsung E715 or Sony-Ericsson T610 are pretty good but the T610 is being phased out.
better suggestion is to buy phones in duty free shops in places like Dubai - they have more variety and the phones are already unlocked.
mG.

Lau Confuse bro yesma Hasne kura k cha ra yaar.. Believe me it does work.

MindGames -- I am heavy duty cell phone user, believe me Moto V300 is far better than T610 in terms of signal quality and battery life. My fav is Moto Razr but its way expensive. Anyway, any phone with 900 MHz will work in Nepal. Samsung E715 or New Samsung E315 is not bad either.

MindGame Says

"the spoiler. the credit card thing is right. but they also need your SSN to set up an account. so act wisely or it may mess up ya credit. "

As long as you go and activate at Indirect Dealer or Store (not corporate dealer) you don't need you worry about giving away your SSN, they ain't do nothing. BTW I don't work of Customer Care.
