What are "Tibetans" that speak Nepalese, and have been living in Nepal for three or more generations, and have never been to Tibet? A plain Query.. NOT an offense to any Race/Cast.

Is this a debate on the originality of Nepalese.
It would take me back to the HISTORY syllabus in school.
All way down from Kirats........... to malla to ........Shah dynasty.
Based on originality , it looks to me everyone's migrated from somewhere.
IndoAryan's migrant from south ( chettri /Brahmins),Tibetans from north (from the time of Amshuverma?) and so on........
Let's not confuse ourselves asking the originality of Nepaleses?

Ok Dreamz, Someone asks you what your nationality is (say you're in the US)..! Do you say Nepalese or Indo-Aryan(now say you're a Chhetri/Brahmin)? I wasn't questioning on the originality... that was a geographic identification query!!!~~

The 2nd or 3rd generations of Tibetans still consider themselves to be Tibetans although culturally they are more Nepali then ever.

I have had the opp to mingle with quite a few Tibetans in the past and I have learnt that they also have some internal conflict. Like the Tibetans from Nepal tend to hate the ones raised in India and vice versa. Sometimes it pisses me off when they talk crap about Nepal(the ones in India esp)..but again few bad apples can't make thing bad abt all the other good people. Its good to see so many Tibetans all around the world...trying to fight back Chinese supremacy. I hope they get to rule their own destiny..but also I am not sure about thier capability to run their own land..

Has anyone watched this movie called 7 years in Tibet? I found it to be very intriguing although its really long..good acting..nice work!!

Thank you casey00, that's reasonable enough! All "tibetans" ( Nepali/Indian Passport holders) that I have met so far happened to be calling themselves Tibetans; some take as an offense if they're called Nepalese/Indians accordingly.
I wish them luck on having their "Free Tibet" as well..!
That's really a good movie with Brad Pitt appearing as an Austrian tourist that makes a trip to the Himalayas, loses the way, and ends up in Tibet, being Dalai Lama's friend!~~

saajha, they're nepalese.
just as cuban, mexicans, italians or greeks become americans when they migrate to america. ok they might be italian americans or cuban americans, but if your passport says u are a nationality of so and so and the govt of said passport says that it is legally and morally responsible for u, then i guess u are obligated to the country in said passport.
but if u plan to live there u have to assimilate,
and i guess ure question asks, if ones family has lived there for 2-3 generations, and they speak sudha, prastha nepali, and enjoy all things nepal, then they must be nepali.
i agree with u there, i mean if all u've ever seen is nepal, then of course ure nepali.
it goes without saying.
however it doesn't mean that one has to lose the sense of one's cultural, religious or traditional identity or values just in order to fit in.
i think the issue of stating that one is tibetan not nepalese despite holding a nepalese passport is silly.the same with italian-americans cheering forza italia, when they're playing usa. silly, but thats what they do, and who am i to question it.who is anyone for the matter.
and the tibetan issue, if looked at subjectively, i feel it arises from deeply felt racial and ethnically manifested slurs and racial subjugation, then there's the fact that they lost their country, and the decimation of their culture goes on till today. so i can feel where they are coming from, and emphatise,
not that they need it? but i understand.
i have yet to meet one holding a nepali passport dissing nepal though,
nepal's got its own melting pot, and despite all the naysayers and aryan supremacists, i think it's a good thing.
so to sum up, bro/sis
if it's cool to say u're italian american cause familia's been there for 3 generations, or nepali-american if u just got ure green card, then i guess it allright for them to say they're tibetan-nepalese irrespective of the time-frame.

for if all my education has provided me is a means to make up my own mind based on what i know, see and feel, and not jump on anyone's bandwagon, then i am happy.
hungry but happy.

half of america doesn't when they show arab-americans on tv. they ask ?? like why don't they speak american(sic), why are they here in the first place. blah-blah.

dannyko bimar lagecha:-)

Kdee,
I agree on most parts that you super-pondered on for a small raised question (however I appreciate that effort!), except for couple facts:
-You are not called an American or even a Nepalese-American when you hold a green card! You sure can call yourself so once you get the 'Citizenship'.
-Nepalese die to call themselves American Citizens or be identified among the peers as 'Green Card holders', and even the F1s, H1s, tourists, and worst.. the ILLEGALS don't hesitate saying "I'm an American"; and here we are talking about the GENERATIONS of NATIONALITY....~~~ What shatters that pride to be called a NEPALI and what lifts one up to that ultimate paradise by identifying themselves as fake/real Americans ?
SO forget about Nepalese-American and Nepalese-Tibetan (two-word-phrases), and tell me... what would you call yourself if you and even your parents (not necessarily)was born and raised in the USA, and someone simply asks you what nationality you are...(just a plain nationality question, not the originality?) Would you say:
A. An American
B. An American
C. An American
D. All of the above
Bingo... You're right!!!

Note: Just want to make sth clear--> my second fact is the generalized statement. I hope not to see anyone claiming he/she doesn't lie/add up/fake the Nationality, and is PROUD to be a Nepali;... sure we all are!

I agree with mahakaal........i mean they are tibetans rite........follower of buddism........enhance they are the most voilent ppl in city.........i dont do it like stero thinking.......the way i see ....they just use tibet for travelling all around the world. Just say tibetans they will give u visa everywhere except china

i think since china took tibet.......it has changed a lot and ppl seems to be happy about it. my french fren just came back , he said that they are happy and tibetans has become so commercial unbeliveable.

i do have lot of tibetans frens but i will say 10 out of hundred will be worth as long as they dont go over with smuggleing stuff out of country.........how many murti they have sold in overseas........how many valueable stuff of nation they have sold. Who has money in nepal ............who's kid study in international school.............

who has cost more than 1 core that is tibetans

"Tibetans" that speak Nepalese, and have been living in Nepal for three or more generations,
Your first line suggests those- who are living here for "generations "( which itself suggests that they are no different from any other ethnical grp in Nepal- who themselves at one pt of time migrated from somewhere else).

A line could be drawn from tribes/ group who are living in Nepal from generations( eg.. here tibetans who havent even seen tibet ) to those who are here for only one or two generations( on which case i see a reasonable ground for them to be paranoid to be called Nepalese- and who still prefer to be tibetans at heart)

Just like u (saaja ) said ,a line can be drawn for nepalese who are here in US just for a generation or two from those as (kdee) suggests-cuban, mexicans, italians or greeks americans or even black americans who are here in US for generations.

Soon will be the days, we wont be alive then :), generations after ;we( nepaleses who 'll have lived in US for generations ) would tick ourselves as american from the above llist u provided.
.....just as naturally as black or white american does today ,who if beared in mind have also migrated from somewhere at some point of time.

let the tibetans decide what they wanna be called..
if a nepali american wants to call him/herself nepali rather than an american. aint nothing wrong with a tibetan-nepali calling him/herself tibetan

Tibetans/Nepalese are mixed. There are few communities ( Khachara) like Newari/Tibetan, Sherpa/Tibetan, Ukyab/Tibetan ( those from Taplejung) and few more. These groups of people claims themselves Nepali, but their daily culture is so much influenced by Tibetan including the language. HMG also recognizes them as descendents of past Nepali Trading communities who used to Trade with Tibet.

Even though originally they are from TIBET and they are born in NEPAL. I think they have right to call them self whatever they want. I have a lot of friends who are tibetan and but was born in NEPAL, some of them call themselves "NEPALI" and some "TIBETAN NEPALI". My good friend is tibetan but was born in Nepal along with all her sibilings. She considers herself as Nepali Tibetan. She will tell people she is Tibetan but at a same time she will mention she is from Nepal.

It goes with all the other races. I mean a mexican who was born is US has several different names they can choose from such as "Mexican American, Chicano or even Hispanic." One of my friend is Mexican and was born in US and he calls himself "WHITEXICAN". White + Mexican.

Like I said before I think it should be up to the person to be called whatever they want to be called.....................Peace Out...............

Well folks, I thought my Tib/Nep thread was over and I wasn't expecting it to be popping up again, but since I've been getting all those VAGUE opinions on it, I decided to make myself clear once again.
Yes Rekha, Every individual on this earth bears the right to call him/herself whatever Nationality seems to be preferrable or would sound good! And roc1432, you're right as well,.. I don't see anyone pinning someone elses' tongues either from choosing their Nationality/ies. Nevertheless, the point I wanted to clarify ... and still ardently want to put forward is that... THERE SEEMS TO BE A DILEMMA ON THEIR NATIONALITY IDENTIFICATION, WITH THE CLEAR ENOUGH FACT THAT THEY ARE NEPALESE JUST LIKE OTHER NEPALESE DESPITE THEIR DISTINCTNESS (Every race/cultural group posseses so); AND MY WONDERING AND PONDERING AROSE FROM THE FACT THAT NEPALESE DIE TO CALL THEMSELVES AMERICANS, SOON AFTER TOUCHING THE US LAND WITHOUT ANY LITTLE SENSE OF AWKWARDNESS...AND THOSE NEPALESE WHO ARE LITERALLY LIVING IN NEPAL, BEING A PART OF IT FOR GENERATIONS WOULD POSSIBLY NOT HAVE MUCH OF A DISCOMFORT IN HOLDING A NEPALESE FLAG WITH PRIDE.
Thank you everyone for participating~~
