Hi I am Saurav Manandhar majoring in Environmental engineering. I am a student at Columbia College at Columbia, Missouri. I am on my 2nd semester here. I want to transfer to some good and cheap engineering college where I can find a part-time work too. I am on F-1 student visa..

I heard there are lots of Nepalese in Minnasota working parttime without work permit and MN also has good enginnering school for my major. Also I heard in Maryland there are lots of jobs available. Please if you guys know anything about good and cheap engineering college with where I can work please contact me. I am feeling really frustrated because this college I am in is very expensive and I got no work.

I am getting all my Geneberal Education done right now according to University of Missouri syllabus

Please contact me at sauravmanandhar@hotmail.com

Sincerely,
Saurav Manandhar

Well, I know first hand how many of the skilled immigrants are doing in Canada. In fact I was working as a Recruiter for a HR palcement company until late last year. In fact I took interviews with , processed job applications as well as assigned them to many jobs for Chinese, Indian, Latino, Black skilled immigrants. Many of these immigrants had Masters Degree and most of them had Bachelors Degree in various discplines.

I really hate to say this, but what I felt was that almost all them had come to Canada with an expection of qucik fix. Most of them have a mind set of culture from back home which makes it diffifult for them to immerse themselves into the ................
......right ?

Saginaw Valley State University at Saginaw, Michigan

Reasonably cheap school. I had an option to go to this school in north Michigan but I went to a different school.

Swaati didi,

Washington merto area meaning in washngton state ho?? How much is the tuition and room board cost estimate. also, i am a freshman so do you recommend i go to washington metro for just 1 year for my Bachelors degree and transfer to UMD?? you said i can do 2 and 1/2 years there. but i would already have completed 1 year here so i am assuming they will accept my credits right. so i would only have to do 1 and 1/2 year there and complete the next two years in MD ho entering there are a juniour.

Also does washington employers hire students who have F-1's? cause its illegal. do u have any contacts??

PLease if you can mail me on sauravmanandhar@hotmail.com

Cool Keta,
University of DC sounds affordable with respect to tuition but you can't undermine the cost of living in DC.
I have heard about the Universities in Minnesota that offer in state tuition if you agree to live on campus and in other schools, almost everyone gets a Cultural Scholarship which is like the in state waiver or equivalent to it.
Well, I haven't been to any of those places but I have heard from friends who apparently are also thinking about transferring to MN.
I don't particularly how good the engineering program is in the universities like St. Cloud, Winona State, Minnesota State; nonetheless you can go to their websites and see it for yourself.

Good Luck, Cool Keta.

Dear CK, by saying washington metro are mean washinton dc, capitol city. yeah u can enroll in udc for ur shophomore year. u will get credit transfer too. Just keep on check that how many credits they will offer to u. whatever u do try to transfer to Univ of Maryland when u have 3 semester left to graduate. Cuz UMD doesn't accepts transfer student when one have only year to graduate (its only for school of marine science and architecture). yeah apt is little costlier but u can share rite don't ya? Jobs, oh yeah lots of.

BTW just say swaati. I am aslo a freshman. But i did enjoy when u say didi cuz i am the youngest one even some of my nephews are elder than me he he he .

Netaa_ji,

Yes, the expectations are high but rightfully so if you ask me. Canadian government makes HUGE amount of money just by recruiting '"skilled immigrants".On the other hand, US has a different policy. They also need immigrants BUT they don't try to make money off of it(directyl that is). You look into HUman development rankings and you see Canada constantly hovering around top 3 rank whereas US usually out of top ten. The criteria for that ranking is health, education ..etc. As you know when Canada demands application, the applicants are required to be educated( bachelors degree or mroe), work expereince and physically( medical examination for that) HEALTHY...now when you have successful applicants with all these qualities the country is automatically going to get better rankings..Who looks infront of the world? CANADA!!....On top of that Canada becomes so nice that it grants political asylum to lot of people..after 911...all the muslims from US have lined up in Buffalo...for easy permanent residence..I always welcome refugees but I wouldn't want my tax paid money to go on lot of FAKE cases...good majority of those people are here just for paper..Also, adding to that is the fact that my chances of getting a job will be slim...

my only concern is that..C anada needs to be trutful about what it is asking for..Ok , lets say..they want 1 million people each year and that also for general/skilled labour..carpenters/forlifters/labourers for Russia...anywhere...and get it from it..How can you expect education driven individuals to totally give up what they do low level jobs...I mean nobody wants a job at ottawa or anything but something related to the career should be given..if not why all the FUSS...

trust me its nothing new to this country.back in the days when there was limited media and no internet...to attract immigrants canada used to send pics ofvancouver/lakes.....green and stuffs...and NOTHING that signified coldness or SNOW...jsut to lure people...do man just dont buy into this whole capatalist/socialist agenda..these maple leafs are witty..

Such stories of great expectations and bitter dissapointments has been a part of immigrants coming into Canada since the days of Samuel de Champlain when he founded 1st permanent settlements of Port Royal in 1605 and Quebec City in 1608. Such expectations and dissapointments runs in every 1st generation of immigrants coming into Canada.

In the olden days Canada surely used a bait of free farm lands in Prarries. For many immgrants who had no land or possessions in their own country, it was a great offer. At least in Canada, they got acres of land free where they could work on it and start something to make a living for themselves and generations to come. For many of them it worked out well and for few it didnt work out that well.

At large it was a fair deal. Which country and its people was ready to let total strangers swamp into their country, give them free land and accept them and their children as a part of thier society. Most countries didnt even let any foreigners to set foot into their country (dont even imagine about giving total foreigners any free land). The most important part is the fact that Canada didnt bring any of these immigrants to Canada by force, the immigrants themselves made the choice of comming into Canada and give a try into a new country, a new society and a fresh begining in return Canada got chance topopulate its thinly populated vast sized country. A fair deal I believe.

In the modern times, until the times of Pierre Trudeau, yellow skins (Chinese) and Brown skins(south Asians) were mostly discouraged or worse not allowed into the country. I should be grateful that Pierre Trudeau was a visionairy and changed such discriminatory immigration policies therefore I can be here giving me a chance to give my shot at new life into new country and new society.

I'm a newcomer I dont expect anyone to set up a job readymade for me nor is anybody responsible to find a great job of my choice ready just for me. I have to work myself up towards prosperity with resources and help that I would have had never gotten in Nepal or the United States (there is no such thing as HRDC in the US, forget about even funding a career related training by the US givt).

I work with college and university grads and up coming grads with my current job in Toronto , and almost all of them volunteered or do crappy jobs before they find god jobs in their related field. Many of of them did jobs totally unrelated to their field of study at college or university just to work their way to find better jobs (I tell you, Lisa is a grad of McMaster university and she is volunteering at a social service organization for over a year in hoping to find a better job ) .

Despite being Canadian born, I found that their experience was and is not much different than immigrants. The only advantage they have is that fact they can dialute themselves into the mainstream white society much quicker and much deeper than immigrants while they have great disadvantage when dealing with large non-white social groups from outside of Canada.

I would be disgusted to hear if some immigrant would expect to find a quick fix the next week or the next month they arrive into Canada with Master's degree in Chemical Engineering with no mindset of Canadian society.

I certainly know that Canadian immigration laws are more favourable for immigrants when compared to the immigration laws of western european countries and the US, that doesnt mean Canadian govt is showcasing itself as ultimate destiny of immigrants with quick fix. It's the immigrants who have to do the careful research about if their expectations would be fully realized here or not.

At the end of the day, its the immigrants(not Canada) who makes the decison if she/he will want to come here or not. In fact, immigrants now have over 200 countries across athe world to choose from where they can go and settle down permenantly. Why choose Canada ?

I dont see how Canada is making a great amount of money from immigrants. Currently Canada has a target of bringing in estimated 2,50,000 (two hundred fifty thosand) immigrants eah year and could not meet the target. Canada failed to bring 2,50,000 in the year 2003.

By the way how mcuh does it cost to the govt to offer all the public services (which they would have never gotten in their native country) to the each immigrants each year ?

Free land, eh?

Well, thats such a diplomatic word. Ok, Canada is one of the biggest countries in the world and it does need lot of people to fill in. Having said majority of the land is not liveable ...unless you camp out and live like Eskimos.

Yes, ultimately its the immigrants who make a choice to come to Canada. No doubt about that..but I am saying is those people are wrongfully lured with fake promises. The point system in for applicants is very fishy..On one hand they give preference to immigrants who could possibly join their mainstream work force, which the immigrants have been doing in their native land..on the flip side..they expect immigrants to do odd jobs..and then whats the lame excuse? Oh...it happens to everyone...everywhere in the world...well..in that case..why shouldn't you be different??

Ya, almost 250 k immigrants are lured to this country everywhere..and mostly they reside in Toronto, Vanvouver or MTL..I mean thats a HUGE number...unlike US where there are tons of major cities...the immigrants will automatically feel the heat competing against those people..esp with so much less openings...Also, the poverty rate in Toronto is extremly disheartening..and monthly income for immigrant dominated neighbourhoods in Toronto dont exceed $1000..dollars...Last yeat Toronto star ran an entire page on this...crazy stuff...

I just feel sad that Canadian government doesn't care much about immigrants after they land here..for example..if they have so many immigrants coming to few major cities then why cant htey outsource them to different provinces..that outsourcing could be done by having different opps especially desgined for the immigrants..the mindset of the new immigrants is that they are nt ready to leave major cities becuase if they are struggling to find here then they dont expect much from less populated suburbs..

Canada spends so much money on HRDC eh..hmmm how cool is that? well they need to give jobs to those canadians..right...lol..so they gotta open up ..seriously,,I hae been there dude..and that was also for regular job..its no use...atleast in my case...and if I may ask..if the grass was so much greener on this side how come immigrants still prefer to be in US?????...the canadian immigrantion trend is south asian/chinese/eastern european now..and how come good chunk of immigrants are moving to US after spending some time..I mean ..there must be something, right?

Well, many many immigrants head south after spending some time here. Yeaah they do, only after having a bitter fight with USINS (US Immigration) only to find that it's 10 times tougher to make the best of what the US has to offer.

And, if someone wants to cross, live and work illegally, probably it is the most easy border to get through, after all it's the longest undefended border between any two countries in the world. Many Mexicans come to Canada and head south rather than get in the US straight from Mexico because of the very same reason.
