Nepal Seeks Out Gay Tourism
01.25.05

By Ross von Metzke

(Kathmandu, Nepal) ? In an effort to boost a sagging travel economy, several tour operators throughout Nepal are targeting the gay community.
As tourism has suffered for much of the last nine years under the Maoist insurgency, tour companies have enhanced specialty tourism options beginning with the gay community.

Aashan Nepal is at the forefront of tourism agencies catering to gay travelers, with services ranging from gay guides to booking gay-friendly hotels. The agency has also focused energy on exploring and writing up gay bars and nightclubs throughout the country.

Aashan Nepal owner Bhismaji Pant said he got the idea for focusing on gay clientele while working at a travel agency in Japan and later, during a stint in Bangkok.

?In these countries I found gay clients making inquiries about gay-friendly services and guides and I realized we had no such agencies in Kathmandu,? Pant told a Nepalese news service.

Nepal?s gay community was largely closeted until recently when, in 2000, the government recognized the Blue Diamond Society as the first public platform for the gay community registered with the government. Since, Nepal has seen a growing vibrancy to the gay community, emerging from the mostly traditional, male-centric culture.

Aashan Nepal is the is the official tour agency of the Blue Diamond Society with a large amount of gay clients coming from Holland, New Zealand, Spain and Italy. Additionally, companies like Himalayan Humanity Trekking are working with Aasha and the Blue Diamond Society to format a focus on gay tourism.

Openess to Gays is treating with respect to a fellow human being, its nothing wrong when people do 'unnatural' things... in that sense everything is unnatural which science has discovered...
Now the question abt gay tourism in Nepal is something we shud be peculiar abt...coz of the mentality n economic background of our society.I wud like to discuss all of them in brief here:

Mentality: we the Nepalese r somewhat always influenced by white people..we want to look , walk, talk, enjoy, have sex just like the one we r shown in MTv n those who dont have Mtv, follow the rest...so its a kind of trend going on in our society that youth r following every footsteps of the white guys which can prove rather suicidel , we can never blame it to anyone else than our own mentality that what white guys do r always RIGHT n the most appreciated.

Economic Background: Now the war going on between govt n maoists the deterioting economic condition of Nepal can force Nepali youths (more vulnerable) in doing things without correct judgement. In other sense they will do anything for money, including homosexual activities. In a society where girls are still being trafiicked by their close relatives we can never deny the fact that the youths of our nation will not be largely affected.

Now both the points I mentioned above is particularly for country like ours where the society is crippled by poverty n uneducation, where people can easily be exploited for the sake of money n influence.

We do agree that gays r real human beings n we r not against them but the background we have is different...people back in nepal r now in no situation to think abt something else than to get rid of the current crisis...no one has the right to take advantage of that.
We r not talking abt Newzealand , US, Canada, France or the Netherlands where people r educated n can think... R we??? , if yess then I have no objection.

I have transformed myself from homophobe to a person that cares less about anyone elses sexuality. I used to be a hater, totally opposed to the idea of open homosexuality. But, living in a town that is very open to this has definitely made me think differently. Yes, it is very normal to get disgusted by the "activites" that homosexual people present. Still, I wouldnt want to see a male dressed up like a female ...someone people are scared of CLOWNS..and I get disgusted by that. Anyway, my point is it shouldnt be my problem...after all its their body...if thats how they feel good then sure.

Lately, gay marriage has been a big issue...

Why I support gay marriage:

-- The whole iidea of marriage is...male and a female..promising to be together through thick and thin..well..if two people of same sex feel same way then why SHOULDNT they get married???

--usually when gay couple raise kids and if they are not legally married..they have problems. with documents and stuffs..

-- if one of two gay people who have been living for eternity ..dies and they were not married then the person who is alive in not enittled to anything...so pretty much its all on the paper..

Why I oppose(iffy( gay marriage..

---where do you draw the line????? 50 years ago homesexuality was a disease..now its not...what if 50 years from now...someone wants to marry a DOG..or a CAR..or something...well..you cant say its cant happen...

--- I am not sure what msg it will send to the young generation..all the vulgarism..and unnatural stuffs they do...

well, I support if homesexuals in Nepal want to come out and live their life like they want to..nothing wrong with..I just hope it doesnt attract unwanted attention..I hope it doesn't become a place where 50 something white males go HUNTING for young nepali meat...after all...there are have tons of cases of child porn....all those kuires..in Thame looking for kids...grosses me out.

i hate to be the pedant, but keep rocking bro .....
i got an eyeful of gaali of you for a statement
that wasn't even mine.

"here activities shudn't be allowed to foster in public domain. thats what i oppose of, u silly thug."
was not typed with these fingers.
and god willing, such blatant hate and despicable
feelings will never enter this soul.:)
i was merely quoting a sentence from another user that irked me..
..and using it to rebut his arguments. if u scroll up, u will probably see what i mean.
but nonetheless i see where u stand on such an issue...and i like.
may the force be with you

Keep ROcking, like KEdee seems to be another rotten egg in the Sajha room. You scumbag, you hellish freak why do you swear at me? Can't I express my opinion against explicit homosexual activities which can erode the fragile social structure of Nepal? WHy do you thugs try to be provocative???
Do you think you are the messiah of humanrights just by getting the oppertunity to live in the USA? DO you think f***, S*** and B****** and sex are the only things that you can learn from the west? Shame on you. Shame on the rotten children of some corrupt Kathmunduties who have helped to spread drug and sex trade in Nepal.

Now back to other readers. Sorry about what I was forced to say. NOw you read my opinion and judge if I am wrong.

Nepal is in deep political crisis now. There is violence, there is corruption. Illeteracy and poverty has hardhit the country.Drug dealers are making Kathmandu the centre of trafickkers from all around the world. With drug now comes sex trade. If sex trade soares high, aids/ stds spreads. WIth it, rise other social problems. Things are already out of control. Once sex trade is out of control what happens to our country???? How many of the Nepalese are aware about the consequence of unsafe sexual activities? How many know about homosexuality in Nepal? Is this the time to welcome homosexual tourists whole heartedly for few dollars??? Or there are other burning issues??? I think if such publicity is given to Gay campaigners and gay activities, the social structure of Nepal- the congenial atmosphere at home, the family vaules everything will be eroded. And who will take the responsibility? The DFID which is funding the gay newspaper?or you who is advocating for uncensored gay activities and sextrade florishing in Nepal. Be practical, be responsible to the nation and think with human and Moral values in mind. This is not the right time to welcome gay tourism in the country. First match with the west in terms of development, education and broad mentality.

DO NOT THINK THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED EVERYTHING BY LIVING IN THE WEST.

hello
it's your friendly neighbourhood superhero again.
battling all the hate i can
:)
i think u lost your case, exactly at the point where u spelled
illiteracy thus, " Illeteracy"
but i'll stop being pedantic for today and offer u an olive branch.
i guess i should have just stfu and let u post all your bigoted, hate mongering,
simplistic, caustic and nonsensical rants. it is the interweb and all.

you are entitled to your views and who am i to judge you. i mean if you think that
all gays are, i quote " indulging in unnatural sex" and the sex trade will result in inflated aids epidemics, who am i too put forward opinions like...wait for it.

" rather then think of homosexuality like an ungodly act and that they will burn in hell for it, the notion of accepting it as their thing, accomodating it, and teaching them about the dangers of unprotected sex, turning the tables on misguided taboos and learning to live with it.
i understand that an idea like so is totally novel for you and does not fit in with your
extremist views on how life should be lead, your stance is more so of the let them burn the misfits variety, from what i gather, and as of today it shall be fine by me.
i mean who am i?
i mean nepal is in a political crisis, so all semblance of morality, humanity, tolerance freedom has to take a backseat. hoinara.

look i get where you are going with sex tourism and exploitation and the likes.
i do, and i detest it as much as the next person.
but that doesn't mean i'm going to run out into the street trying to find a queer guy
and mess his house up.
tolerance sathi tolerance.
and thus i tolerate your simplistic views on the fact that nepalis in the west think they
have " learned everything"
an assumption, based on nada, but i tolerate it.
spread the love dude " kaching"

'all so u can have a cheaper dvd player???
f*uck u. and the platform u stand on....
f*uck u again'

It was you who instigated this senseless war of words. Now you have offered a truce. And I thankfully accept your generosity.

I acknowledge your supremacy at english. k garni sathi aafu le ta sarkari school ra campus ma padheko. baule boarding pathauna sakenan. but illiteracy spelling was a typing error, you made a mock out of it. fair enough. Real genius however do not make fun of other's mistakes. Hopefully I will learn some english stuffs (american)from u in coming days.

I got so many attributes- racist, nazi, hate monger, simplistic, caustic, nonsense blah blah. Special thanks for that. have a good time mate.

Kdee bro...thulo misunderstanding from my side.....wahahaha....sorry for that....

For your information Newuser i was not scolding you.....i was scolding Kdee thinking that he was calling names at MatrixRose, Confused and me....

The conflict is between you two....so don't include me...????

And ya....everyone as their right to pour out their thoughts in sajha.....so you got the right to say what u believed is right.....and we got the right to say what we think is logical and right too.....but the wrong things is calling out names just because he/she didn't agreed with you....instead of calling out names, you should try to make your opponent realize that the way he thinks is wrong by giving lots of examples and strong points.....

Newuser said: "Do you think you are the messiah's humanrights just by getting the opportunity to live in the USA?"

Firstly i'm not in USA......i'm in UK and i was born and grow up in a foreign land.....ya u are right we have no right to be their human right....and do you have the right to accused their right...have you gone thru the same stages as they have gone thru.....here i was not trying to act as their human rights.....but was just expressing my tots.....well dude, u and i have different tots as we were brought up in a different society.....where i came from, this kind of issue has long been overcome.....but Nepal is still conservative to this kind of ideas as the people there are still narrow minded....Ya, i do agree that it's a kind of shame to have a gay society in Nepal...But what's the heck....Nepal is not the first country to come up with this idea....Being in USA or UK...doesn't mean that we are learning all the negative stuff...here we learn to view pictures in a broader sense....accepting people of different characters...respecting others right (human rights).....just to fulfill your desire u can't pushed other people's right to a corner....

Newuser said: "If sex trade soar high, aids/ stds spreads. WIth it, rise other social problems."

What do you mean sex trade soar high......Are you telling me that if the Gay Society is establish then sex trade will soar high.....wahahahahah....dude...whether there's this Gay society or not....sex is always there.....behind the closed door...you can stop the Gay society from establishing but can't prevent them from having sex....

Newuser said: "Be practical, be responsible to the nation and think with human and Moral values in mind. "

wahahahaha.....they are being practical by declaring they are GAY....and you tot gay pplz is not responsible toward their nation....just look at other countries which have gay society......the gay or the straight....everyone is playing a role for their country to build up a strong economy....By the way, what is a moral values if you don't know how to respect other's rights...

Newuser said: "This is not the right time to welcome gay tourism in the country. "

hahahaahah.......you wanna totally stop the Gay society from establishing or you want it to come later after Nepal crisis is over.....wahahaha...i can't seem to understand u....So when is the right time for the Gay society to be established dude....When voices start to roar then it will not wait for the TIME but the event just take place...so it's not in your hand or my hand...but it all depend on the Gay Society when they wanna bring a change...

Newuser said: " DO NOT THINK THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED EVERYTHING BY LIVING IN THE WEST. "

Ya dude, u are right....that's so much thing to learn in life and i don't think we will even finish learning in this life...and as for u ....DO THINK THAT YOU ALSO KNOW EVERYTHING BY POINTING FINGER AT OTHERS......

***********************************************************************

Just look at the pic above....they are pathetic pplz....we should consider ourselves lucky that we are not like them.....Anyway they are not asking for your money or property....they are just asking for their rights (a human rights) so that they too can live in a society without a finger being pointer at them or pplz laughing or back biting them.....they just want a acceptance..... and is that hard to give......Who wanna be a freak in the first place....who like to be stared by others...no one ...they are what they are by nature....and if that's what they want then just let it be....it's not our problem....why don't u put yourself in their shoes....just image how they were being ostracized by the society....call them names....make fun of them.....They too have a heart and a feeling like us....how would they be feeling....how would they be reacting to be a freak in their own society....so let them too live a life of their choices....

I oppose to gay marriage, and stop gay tourists to roaming around Nepalese boys. Gay tourists are allowed to go to Nepal and enjoy from our Natural beauty, but abusing young boys is sarcastic. Comon', don't you guys see the funny thing here in US and Europe, a gay couple after getting married wish a child, then they went India, adopted a child brought here in USA. The gay couples, their child is Indian, when a child start calling, he/she can't call Mom, he has to call daddy, and daddy.............. hehehe........ doesn't he feel embarrassment. Guess guys, that child has no Mom, only daddy and daddy (Ghara ma dady dady marta huda, ke think garyo hola) some other children call Mom and dad, but he has to call dad and dad.......... Is not it sarcastic...........?
