February 1 is a dark milestone we Nepali people have crossed thanks to Gyanedra?s coup. Now we are heading to the 700BC! Don?t worry, we are nearing to Ramrajya! Of course, Ramrajya only for the bhai bhardars who could bow dhanustankar in front of the king.

Let us listen to the supporters first. We had had 15 years of democracy including King Gyanedra?s direct rule for the last three years. What did we get from the democracy? Maoist insurgency, corruption from janatas to the king (sorry, I have added the king though his supporters might disagree to include the king in the same level), anarchy and other evils. Now the king?s coup is the only hope left to save Nepal (not the monarchy?). King?s move is especially praiseworthy because he did it for the sake of people risking his own throne. Where could we find such a benevolent God in this 21st century?

There are several types of supporters:
1. Royal dogs ? which will do everything possible to save monarchy, even eliminating half the population is not out of question. They need the king so that their corruption will be considered patriotism.
2. Opportunists ? King has the absolute power ? baleko aago ta tapne ho ni!
3. Anti-netas ? Anarchy in the last 15 has had made them pessimistic and see light in the Narayanhiti as the only light at the end of the tunnel. We tried democracy and failed then why shouldn?t we give the king a chance? It is better to have fewer corrupt people including the king than so many corrupt party leaders.
4. People who suffered during the last 15 years ? We need a change no matter it is for autocracy!

I am a republican, converted from the constitutional monarchist. I had had supported the monarchy because I was afraid that our status as a sovereign country will be in danger without the king. Now I oppose monarchy because our monarchs have failed us. They will never ever willingly give us democracy. When there was a revolution for democracy King Birendra imposed us Gaunfarka - sudhariyeko Panchayat which eliminated the universal suffrage. We were deceived and people had to fight again for democracy.

Did we have true democracy from 1990? No, not at all. We had neo-autocracy. Yes we had election, elected parliament and government, relative freedom of speech and information but the king still held the absolute power. Who controlled the army and police? Any way it was the first giant step for democracy. Unfortunately, our leaders failed us. But I blame the king for all ills in Nepal because he had the absolute power. While people still could remove the corrupt and inept leaders there is no way to remove an inept, corrupt and criminal king in autocracy and in neo-autocracy during multi-party system.

Those people who are expecting dramatic change for the better from the coup please beware:
1. Thing has already ruled as absolute monarch for the last three years. Is there any improvement during this autocratic rule? Didn?t you expect drastic improvement after the parliament was dissolved?
2. Are the ministers in his current government clean?
3. Why he needs to include such old men in the government? Is it because they are royal-dogs? (Sorry for the this term.) How could we trust Gyanendra whose every step is copycat of his father?s move?
4. Nepal is the poorest country in the world but this king has increased the Royal budget many folds since he came to power. Is it in the interest of the people? Wait and see, how many times this budget is going to increase in the near future.
5. Almost all profitable industries are controlled by the king and his cronies and he doesn?t pay any tax. Who dares to collect the tax?
6. Do you really think he has taken this bold move to save the people? I believe that he saw some danger for the monarchy due to his power hungry actions during the hidden autocracy period (for the last three years). He surfaced as a true autocratic ruler so that he could intimidate the people easily. Of course, this tactic is working for the time being, but how long?
7. Do you really trust Gyanendra for solving the Maoist problem? I believe that he will choose to fish in troubled water.

If ?peace? is the only reason for your support for this coup then what to you think about Saddam?s Iraq? What about Rana?s rule in Nepal?.
