Is it difficult for a returning student to get a visa to the US? Are there many students who have been rejected while trying to come back?

Incidentally, a cousin of mine had multiple (5 years) visa when he went to school in USA. Now he has changed the university, and is wondering if he could still return to Nepal without having to reapply for US visa again. Anyone has similar experience?

KankaiRiver, I doubt on that. I-20 is the strongest doc. for students to stay in US. One can stay in US if he/she has valid I-20 even though the visa is expired. You must have noticed the name of the school printed in the visa. Since the school has been changed, I am pretty sure your cousin has to apply again if he goes back.

Now back to Veer. I know of two visa reject incidents. One was out of status in undergrad and another didn't have transcript with her. She was asked to bring the transcript, but I don't know what happened later. The person who was out of status is still in Nepal.

As long as you have strong and vaild docs. and you are in status, nobody is going to stop you.

kankai,

if your cousin has a five year multiple entry visa and has changed school....it makes not difference as long as the visa is not expired...he can fly in and out any number of times he wants. But if the visa has expired having the I-20 valid only...he has to reapply.

Thanksto both of you, though I am still confused. John says he doesn't have to reapply, and Bengaltiger thinks he has to. Yes, 5 years multiple visa hasn't expired yet, but he changed the university. Anyone with an informed idea, please share the info.

Kankai,

I can give you more than fifteen examples of people changing school , going to nepal and returning back as long as they have a valid I-20 and a visa.

Even if the school's name on I-20 is different than the name of school in unexpired Visa?

People in my department told me I need to reaply if I change university even though the visa is not expired because of the university name in the visa. But luckily I didn't have to do that.

Rather than listening to many, the best would be to talk with the people at international center or talk directly with the people who went through this issue. I don't have any first hand experience on this matter.

Sorry if its making you confused
