1) No one needs any formal training to be miserable. Some people seem to have completed a "how to be miserable" course. But fifty % of the things you worry about will probably never happen! The other fifty% will probably happen anyway. So deal with each situation the very best that you can get on with your life.

2) Success is more dependent upon attitude than aptitude. The success of your organization's goeals is directly related to the attitudes of officers and members, not on how smart they are.

3) Don't take yourself too seriously. Keep a sense of humor. Always be able to laugh at yourself.

4) Be tolerant and open-minded in regard to the views of others. especailly if they are contrary to yours. There will be times when you have no choice but to deal with people whom you do not agree. You simply "work it out" and get the job done.

5)Life is game, not a war. Don't let it escalate. Games results winners and losers; wars results only casaulties.

6) Always have a vision or dream. Neither can come true unless you had one one in the first place.

7) No matter how deary situration may appear today. the sun will rise and shine tomorrow with ir without you.

8) Humans have a natural tendency to make mistakes. Thus i'm sure that you will "blow a few" this year. Remember that experience is what you get when you don't get what you want......... you can't buy or lear experience from a book... you must go through the system and take your lumps.

9) To be successful in working with people, you need to a) treat them fairly, b)treat them with respect, and c) make them look good; they will make you look better. A good attitude, good people skills, and good communication skills, coupled with hard work and a little luck, will get you almost anything.

10) Be captain of your own fate. Don't follow other people without thinking it through. In essence, learn to think for yourself. Don't be like 3 monkeys: the first monkey fel off the tree because he was blind, the second fell off because he had hold of the first monkey's tail, and the third monkey because of peer pressure.

11) Be keenly aware of the difference between ignorance and stupidity. As a society, we forgive ignorance, but condemn stupidity, what is the difference? To be ignorant is simply not being aware of something... to be stupid is to be aware of something but do it anyway.

12) Don't be afraid to take calculated risk. The higher the risk, the greater the achievement. As long as what you are trying to acomplish is not immoral, not unethical, not illegal, and not harmful to anyone's health... go for it.... be not concerned that you may be criticized. If you would not be criticized, do not do three things: 1) don't day anything 2) don't do anything, and 3) don't be anything.

13) Do not be afraid to seek second opinion.

14) It is very important to be dissapointed early in life

15) Remember happiness may be likened to a large peice of glass that is broken into many small pieces and strewn along the path of life.

16) There is saying that " people who need people are the luckiest people in the world." This is probably one of the most important principles of life. We all need people.

Orientation remarks by D.R. Butler to the personals of HQ AMC.
