Police interrogates Kantipur editor

KATHMANDU, March 17 - Police on Thursday interrogated editor of the Kantipur Narayan Wagle for about an hour at Hanumandhoka.

?I was asked to clarify about a story published on March 15 issue of Kantipur Daily," Wagle told reporters after coming out of the police station today.

In response to this the legal aid who had accompanied Wagle instantly replied that police was not the concerned body to ask clarification to the editor like Wagle.

?Then the police did not speak further and asked us to return,? said Wagle.

Wagle was accompanied by editor of The Kathmandu Post Prateek Pradhan, Legal advisor of the Kantipur Publications Ram Krishna Nirala and security reported Kedar Ojha.

Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect Journalists has criticized the action of the police towards Wagle. (dds)

Some of the questions reportedly asked during the one-hour interview.

1. When trees are cut down, how do they do photosynthesis to sustain themselves?
2. When there's a total eclipse of the sun, can living things survive for long?

3. What colour is your parachute, and why is that of that colour? [Do you even have a parachute to use just in case the landing gets tough?]
4. Freedom of press or freedom to press -- freely choose one of the two options and give reasons as to why you chose the latter.

5. How old were you in the heydays of Panchayat, and why were you that old? If you were not born during that time, explain why.
6. Between Tulsi Giri and KN Bista, they have more than a hundred years of political experience. Do you have any comments? Say something nice.

7. Name the children and the grandsons of KN Bista, and say what their favorite colors are.
8. Do the same for T Giri.

9. "Terrorism must be defeated. You published reports that struck terror in people's heart, and that's why you are here in front of the police." You must be defeated. Now, nod your head up and down 10 times to indicate that you agree with this statement. Do ten sit-ups and 20 push-ups and shout "kukhuri-kaa" 10 times.

10. Say hello to Hanuman over there near the Dhoka. And sing that song "dhoka, dhoka, dhoka" from the Hindi movie "murder" with appropriately synschronized hip-swinging gestures.

Couldn't help keeping silent after reading these descriptions.

If the above questions were asked to one of the most respected and truly professional journalists of the country, it can be confirmed that Gyanendra's administration has crossed every limits of human insanity. This is extreme madness to say the least.

Our police and army personnels have a trademark of absurdity and idiosyncrasy. But they wouldn't resort to this extent of madness if they were not directed by Gyanendra and Dan Bahadur Shahi. It's sickening to read these kind of filthy behaviours from our securitymen. Only on the second month of the King's rule, our security personnels are behaving pathetically. What would have happen if they gain firm control over the situation?

Gosh! this is too much. No less than the Abu Ghraib torture in Iraq.

To my knowledge (and I could be wrong), Kantipur did not say just which was the "offensive" news-item that it dared print in these sensitive times in Nepal.

I don't know what it was either.

Other than that, as E. B. White once said, "Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it."
