[Some tips to avoid Nepal 's dependence on India ]

India is not a problem, as many would believe. In effect India is a permanent headache to Nepal whose medicines are not available any where in the world. At best since it is a Nepali headache, so it would be wise to devise mechanisms that do away with this disease that has many a times in the past had inflicted mental torture on this Kingdom.

India is with Nepali political parties. It is with Girija, Madhav, and Deuba. India is with Anandai Devi's Sadbhavana. It is equally close with the monarch but it pretends that she is not because the monarch has caused what she calls a "set-back" to democratic system in Nepal . Mind it, in 1960 too; India had termed the late King Mahendra's move as a setback. Let's not forget that the rebels too are supposedly close to the Indians. But then she pretends not to be familiar with this paraphernalia.

India sees so many set backs as and when some thing surprising happens in this country.

The fact is that India is number one anti-democratic country but poses herself as the largest democracy in the world, which she is not by any means. All that she practices is Bihari democracy in effect whose impact is there for all to see in Nepal .

Thanks S.D.Muni who the other day said in Delhi that his country has never championed the cause of democracy in Nepal and that India should have concurrently voiced concerns on the installation (read imposition) of India brand democracy in Bhutan and elsewhere. Muni is a self-proclaimed Nepal expert based in New Delhi whose Nepali versions are aplenty in Kathmandu . This is India 's tacit investment in Nepal 's academic sector.

Sambhu Shrestha, the editor of a powerful weekly called Dristi rightly said last week that Nepal's problems, if any, were solely India and India alone. His conclusion is more than correct.

India is a huge crocodile with tones of tears in its eyes. What crocodile tears mean and when such terms are being used in our society is not a matter of secret.

The day India shed tears for Nepali events, exactly the same evening in one of its provinces one of its leaders bagged confidence motion in his favor. However, Governor rule was imposed to get rid of that very particular leader and some one other than the victor was made in charge of that province. And L.K.Advani the same evening was with all tears concluding that the entire event was a "set back" to Indian democracy. Set back is a term that the Indians like most perhaps.

Without stretching the matter further, here are some tips to avoid or lessen Nepal 's over dependence on India .

The points are as follows:

1-Nepal should begin talking for the abrogation of all the unequal treaties signed with India in the past including that of the most controversial one of 1950.

2-Nepal should keep on hold indefinitely the signing of the extradition treaty that is India tilted treaty.

3-Nepal should buy some time in the finalization of the India proposed construction of Sapta Koshi High dam as suggested by Nepali population residing in that very particular area. The Biratnagar office of that very Dam should be closed for a while.

4- Nepal should make diplomatic efforts in sending the unwanted Indian military guests from KALAPANI area at the earliest.

5-Nepal should fervently request the Chinese side to go in for heavy and massive investments in this country.

6-Nepal should appeal China to construct several link-roads that connected Nepali territories with those of Tibet Autonomous Region so that economic linkages could be firmly established.

7-Nepal can ask for Pakistani investments in the sectors such as textiles, leather factories and tourism.

8-Nepal should initiate registration of the Indian incoming tourists and also of those who are busy in doing economic activities through the use of the "basket".

9-Nepal should on its own initiate construction of railroads, and trolley buses in Nepali highways by using our own surplus hydropower.

10-Nepal can convince Bangladesh for the establishment of factories related to pharmaceuticals and chemical fertilizers under the scheme of joint venture. Tourism sector could also be one wherein B'desh could be interested.

11- Quality education should be provided to Nepali students who could think twice before leaving for India to obtain higher education. Deserving students could be awarded scholarships. This will save money from going into the pockets of India institutions.

12-Nepal should seduce her own farmers to replace those who have come here from across the border with the baskets.

13- Ascertain the Nepali versions of Quislings, Jaychand and Mirjaffors in Nepal 's academic and media sectors who are eating like a moth the very economic and political stamina of their own country. Expose them at the earliest.

14: Bring NC at par to IC. This would enhance the prestige of the country. Let the economists work to this effect.

Care should be taken that all these moves proceed through diplomatic channels. Not necessarily we have to annoy India . Rather we can seek their "active" cooperation in this regard. If India is annoyed, let's prepare ourselves for yet another economic blockade of the sort of 1989 March 23 to be precise.

Tips are aplenty. The million-dollar question is who will take the lead?

This is too impractical and more pro-Chinese than necessary. Diplomacy is successful from a balanced approach then by inclining to a particular powerhouse.

Let's jsut simplify the political crap and change our lifestyles:

Stop watching Hindi movies
Stop watch Hindi Television shows (the Oh so popular ones, that people are glued to every evening!)
Stop listening to and singing Hindi songs
Stop wearing those beautiful Kurthas and Lehangas that are the "must-haves" of Nepalese fashion trends and even more fashionable parties.

Ya right!

Sitara,
your thoughts are quite deep but helpless and bound to be doomed. You probably have forgotten how relaxed our compatriots are.
-----------------
I've more things here for you guys to think before blaming others?

Sambhu Shrestha (i did not read his article) is right to the extent that Nepal has to depend on India for transportation of import and export goods, at least now. All other consequences are our, and solely our problems. It is easy to point the finger at India (or China whenever appropriate). The finger should always be pointing at us, us Nepalese.

Now that big Industries are shut down in Nepal these big CEOs, presidents are enraged. What the hell were they doing when the times were relatively far better 10 years ago? Bribing officials in customs in Nepal and across the border? Flooding money to officicals in the Education Ministry so they could snatch away scholarships which should have been given to merited students? Or adding sand and dust in anything edible, from rice to daal to sugar? What our politicians were doing? Busy collecting bribes....

If I'm not correct, let me ask you what Nepal would have been if Nepal had an open sea to its border? Gone beyond India? Beyond China? What Nepalese politicians have done so much that we could have compared them to Jawahar Lal Nehru or Deng Xiao Ping?
Or there would have been a private aircaft carrier to our ****'s name for private use while the rest of the people were still struggling for tonight's meal?

In the end, I've to say India has been helping us somewhere and aggravating us somewhere else, not because India has inherent ill-intentions towards us but because India itself is developing and is far from having a balanced, far-sighted development to showcase the first world. Although I sound like an Indian, but believe me I'm not.

My point is, we should look at our politicians, leaders etc first then other aspects when it comes to our problems. We should not have to cross the border to find the faults.

The number one problem is the rampant corruption we have in our blood. Period!

Yes, India is headache for Nepal but Nepal is desperate to live with India.

Therefore, What Nepal and Nepalese must do to avoid India pressure, monopoly and control over Nepal.

We must do:

(1) Open border as many as with China. We can connect other countries or seaports thru China. We can connect Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma and Hong Kong, Japan thru china.

(2) We must speed up to build as many as super highways with China.

(3) We must establish wisely Nepal favorable business and border treaty with China. China will do as long as we do not bother china in issues of Tibet, Hong Kong and Taiwan etc. Do not mess with china; China will not mess up with Nepal.

(4) Bring Chinese technology, product and Business Markets:
Chinese good and product always good quality and cheaper than Indian. Chinese technology is far better than Indian. We must not always bag other nation like china and Japan. We must learn to produce raw materials and produce goods. We must build factories and open supply line as well as international market places.

(5) Utilize limited resources in maximum economically and Recycle. Like use:
(a) Solar power, Hydropower, Rubber, Plastic, Paper, Metals not solid wood of tree but mixture wood from dead or waste woods.
(b) Flat land use for Agriculture, Farming, Industries and Business only.
(c) Hill land use for Offices, Residency, Parks, Resort, Green vegetable and fruits farming etc.
(d) Mountain use for Hotel, Resorts, Parks, Tourism etc.

(6) Run movement of self-sufficient: Avoid foreign goods and product as mush as possible. Put extremely high triple tax, so majority people must not think to buy. National product must be met standard quality, affordable price and very minimum tax.

(7) Nepal must offer cheaper labor market than India and China to develop countries, so Nepal can import foreign industries and technology, and export products and services. We must be greedy for everything. We can loose one and gain other big things. Something is better than nothing.... until we can stand by our own.

(8) Capital punishment must be establish and implement very seriously. Court must be able to hang corrupted and criminals people even in minimum crimes. Crimes and Corruption must be extremely reduce or eliminate. There is no other way that we can bring back our country Nepal as well as Democracy, Freedom, Peace, Human Rights, Life, Future and Happiness for all and forever. That is guarantee???

I totally agree with testdirector. We have inherent tendency to see fault on others and hide of one's. When India was struggling for freedom from English empire, we had a kind of established state. But what we did in terms of improving our systems, educate people and bring development in villages? We did no thing and afraid of our neighbours who are advancing ahead though thier pace is slow. Now, even we are not in a position to be compared to Bhutan and Bangladesh. Think about Sri Lanka fighting a civil war since 1971. She is still a prosperous country with free education, free health and subsidized public transportation. Don't say that these country had infrastructure built by British. Your development depends on the type of institutions you got to solve your problem. So what type of institutions we got since the inception of Nepal? We got institutions that are centered to fulfil the interest of few - few who influence in the village, in the twon, in the district and finally in the capital. We never got system that is favorable for the best interest of the people. If you got institutions that work for people, It does not matter what type of neighbour you have. Most of the South American countries might preceive the US as a pain in thier ass, but these countries are advancing ahead. We could advance ahead along with India. If we could be self sufficient and be less dependent on India, that would be great. But believe me, we can grow fast along with India we should have institutions that can mediate to achieve that goal.

May PASUPATI NATH give wisdome to Nepali people and make them realise the importance of collective growth in the era of globalization.

PEACE
