Police inquire reporters about their 'source'
A senior police official has inquired about their "source of news" with the reporters of Kantipur, a leading Nepali-language daily, in southern town of Chitwan.
According to Tuesday’s Kantipur daily, Superintendent of Nepal Police Surendra Prasad Shah summoned reporters Prabhaker Ghimire, Narayan Sharma and Khuman Singh Tamang at his office in Chitwan and inquired about their “source” of news regarding the incident of arson on seven private trucks at Jalbire in the district by a group of suspected Maoists on Friday night.
The reporters said they could not reveal their “source” as per the ‘code of conduct’ of journalism. Shah then threatened journos to reveal their “source” or face action. The reporters had said they had got confirmation about the incident from police post at Mugling along the Narayangarh-Mugling highway.
Earlier, S. P. Shah and acting chief district officer of Chitwan, Top Narayan Sharma, had grilled the journos for one and half hours at the District Administration Office regarding the news item. Sharma had advised the reporters to contact heads of the administration or security while writing news items of ‘serious nature.’ The police chief then verbally summoned the journos to his office the same evening.
In their response, the journos said they never intended to report in a way that would promote terrorist activities and that the same news has been broadcast from various sources.
Police have again asked the reporters to report to the District Police Office at 10 a. m. on Tuesday.

KATHMANDU, April 5 - Police on Tuesday qestioned the three Post reporters of regional bureau of Chitawan for the second consecutive day. SP Surendra Bahadur Shah of District Police Office is believed to have pressurized the scribes Prabhakar Ghimire, Narayan Sharma and Khuman Singh Tamang to divulge the source of the news relating to the seven trucks torched by Maoists or to retract the published news. However, the scribes denied giving written statements, while taking the stand that the police were not the authority to interrogate them regarding the reports filed. The reporters also maintained it was meaningless to deny news that was based on reality and even broadcast from various national and international media.
