I was told by one of my collegue who studied in UK that engineering job is very difficult to get in UK ?

Is this true ?

I know for sure that Civil engineering is a hot market in the DC area, specially if you are into construction, stormwater, flood plain etc.

Engineering is a broad discipline.

In the US, you could see the same engineering position being advertized and readvertized, because prospective employers have difficulty finding one.

what kind of engineering are you interested in?

i know that civil engineering jobs are the hardest to find overall. i know a lot of my friends from school who did civil ended up doing management/IT consulting or banking. only one ended up doing project management for a construction company. chemical engineering pays better, but i am not too sure about job prospects in the US. quite a few mechanical folks end up in product design companies, but again i don't know how easy it is. i think the easiest jobs (relatively speaking) are for electrical engineers. there should be quite a few opportunities in 1) ASIC/VLSI design 2) DSP/signal processing/communications 3) software engineering (systems level programming as well as applications development)

check out monster.com, dice.com and hotjobs.com. I've personally never used them, but I've heard of ppl getting jobs thru these agencies.

good luck.

the easiest in the US are for Industrial Enginners. I have quite a few freinds who were into IE and they were placed immediately. I did EE and am still looking for a job.

'Easy' may be a far stretch word for Job prospects in Engineering field, as far as US is concerned.
What it comes down to is, whether you have a US education or not and whether you have atleast a permanent residency or not. There are many US born engineers who are finding hard time to get engineering related job, in such times it might be hard for a person, educated outside US, to get a job right away. Companies are looking for Green Card/ Citizenship as pool of prospects is ever increasing.

This applies to Mechanical, Electrical and Civil. I am not sure about Industrial as a friend pointed above.

Having said that, it is not as if it is impossible to find Engineering job in US. There are examples coming up everyday who got hired by a company or two.

LIke any other jobs now-a-days, the odds are not in favor of the prospects.

agree with DWI 100%. It's harder to land a job in the US if you do not have a US degree.

cool_keta: i did not mean to scare you. i was just saying that civil is a bit harder, but it all depends on the school. maybe your university is strong in civil, and therefore job placements are better. talk to the senior students. that would give you better info. but if i were you, i would start looking for summer internships in civil engineering (even if it is unpaid) soon, and possibly doing civil engineering projects with profs at school.

another engineering major that is pretty hot right now is financial engineering. a couple of folks i know who did financial engineering got nabbed for analyst jobs on wall street. this applies to the industrial engineering/operations research/statistics folks also. but it's really important to do an internship and start the job search early.

Engineering jobs are somewhat hard to find, it all depends on what field you are in and where you are. If you apply to private companies you are more likely to find it but that means more competition. All or most companies have government contracts, so they are very strict about security as well...other than that it's not bad. Like i said depends on what field you are in....research in space related topics are on the go right now.

I know there are lots of jobs in civil engineering (construction or design). But the main thing is if you have completed EIT exam and heading to PE exam or not. Most of the companies especially consulting firms who are involved in design require PE license. If you have PE there are lots lots of jobs and also pay is high. But if you dont, it is very difficult to get, especially in consulting firms but still you can get in construction.
I agree with Mr Bedrock, there are many jobs in stormwater management, floodplain, urban water. ALso there are many in environmental engg espcially water quality, waste water treatmentt. I dont think anybody need to change their field from civil engineering to another, simply due to unavailability of job.
Good luck

There are plenty of jobs in in civil and environmental engg. I dont know other fields in engg. In environmental hot fields are waste water management and water quality. In civil- structure (but it is difficult without PE in structural design), and construction are in hot list as far as I know and many of my friends are working in these fields. For water quality and resources Southeast states (FL, GA, SC,NC, TN), and South West are good ones. For other Civil engg, you can find anywhere.
My advisor told me that job market in civil and env engg is less affected by econmy up and down, comapred to other computer and business related jobs.

also turnover rates in the Consulting business is so high (for Civil) everybody is always looking for people. At least in the DC area, there are many jobs in the Civil field. I don't know about sponsoring for H1 though.
