Since Nepal's unification in 1768, all army chiefs have been from five clans of the ruling Chettri caste: 26 Ranas, 4 Pandeys, 4 Thapas, 2 Basnyats and 2 Shahs. Why? Because they are the traditional elites of Nepal who have always stood fast in support of the King as opposed to the parliament or people (Remember? Then PM Girija P Koirala could not deploy RNA to contend maoists after latter's big attack in Achham district). Simply because the RNA is for the king not for the people. Among others, it is one great mistake that maoists have pointed out in the 'existing' Contitution. Our constitutional monarch enjoys such a discretionary power! Kahin nabhaeko jaatra haandi gaaunmaa.

kusum, i cannot speak for the RANA's but all the thapa's that have been COAS they certainly have been well known for their contribution in the army while they rose through their rank. just to shed some light present COAS; was involved in the tibetians arm movement in 1960's around mustang. one thing we need to focus is may be they were the one qualified for the position. I may not support all the ideas of Maoist but I do support the Maoist idea of dismantling of RNA or reformation of RNA from ground and up so that it can become loyal to the taxpayers NOT the monarch.

Ok, here's my prediction on what a monarchist will come to this thread and say: "Do you want RNA under Girija, Makune and all the bhusyaa leaders?" (I have two words for them: Why NOT?)

Thanks for comments, guys. I still think RNA under Makane, G.P or any democaritic leader is better because they will be more responsible to people. If not, they will bear the fruits in election; people will simply punish them through votes and other democtratic means. I think - and is evident - that the cease-fire of 2003 that was to bring peace in the country was messed up by the RNA (obviously because Gyane wanted to descredit the democratic Govt as an excuse for his dictatorial rule). The national Human Rights Commission team of independent observers found that in Doramba village the security forces had indeed captured and executed 19 unarmed Maoists while there was peace talk going on in Hapure village. The military made a grave mistake thereby forcing the Maoists to pull out fronm the talk. This clearly suggests that the king Gyane was from the beginning looking to use Maoists - and their struggle - as an excuse for his take-over. He did succeed too. In this regard he is the main trouble-maker in the country. And he did this with the use of his die-hard loyal Generals. Now, in the country is a military rule in the name of 'popular' king who is the only so-called Hindu god and all his ruled are 'subjects' not citizens. While seven parties alliance can be taken as a positive move - at least democratic - the Maoists should find a sort of working ground in order to 'tame' the king. I use the word 'tame' rather carefully here because the alternative word - for example 'overthrow' - is still far reaching given the present mess in the country and international concerns. People simply want peace - let development, prosperity and individual liberation follow later - through dialogue with the warring 'party'. The truth is: This war is unwinnable by either side; only people win it.
