Over the past few months, I've noticed websites like Nepalnews, kantipuronline, newofnepal reporting bold reports which are seemingly anti government.

Is the government releasing its hold on the press or is it another grand design?

Well I noticed the "Liverty Gauge" on the bottom right of the Nepali times homepage, which came out after the Feb 1 move, has crept up a few nothes in the last couple of weeks. But it's still closer to Empty than Full. But that's one, almost light-hearted, way of measuring things among many others ways.Obviously press restrictions have not been fully removed and FM stations are still gagged. I think this is some progress but the King has miles to go.

Cryptonite, you seem to have realized that simply by reading through some online contents.

You only have to go through their editorials ? they are openly inciting people to take to the streets. The other day ?The Kathmandu Post? ran an editorial where it was like, ?democracy means bla bla bla...? and begging people to support the corrupt netas.

Some newspapers are even taking a dig at the public ? dare I say castigating them for their lacklustre participation at the political rallies.

Why don?t they just let the people decide for themselves what they would like to do? Suddenly the media is full of praises for Girija P. Koirala, Sher Bahadur, Prakash Man, Chiranjivi Wagle, Bijay Kumar Gacchadar et al. portraying them as ?Messiahs?. Do people really have a very short memory or what? To make a mistake is only human but to repeat the mistake over and over again is sheer stupidity. Where is the lesson learnt?

You know, sometimes, I think to myself ?Nepal is just doomed? let us just reign to our fate.. look at the people around you?they?re like the proverbial monkey who neither makes his house nor lets other make their.. and I should stop getting all worked up by the events taking place is the country? tara k garne? Being a conscious citizen of this country, I can?t remain detached.

I have been less than impressed by the way our media has been conducting itself. Sure, the media can and must be allowed to put forth/broadcast all sorts of news, but for god?s sake it should stop acting as a mouthpiece of the political parties. Sooner or later, people are going to be swayed by their relentless propaganda. I don?t know what this is all about. There seems to be a closet ?hand in glove? collusion between the media and the netas.

Lokman Jee,

I agree with your points. Actually, Kantipur, Nepalnews.com, NewsofNepal, BBC, Nepalipost.com, Janaaastha are like democratic parties, not the newspapers. They are supporting democracy, freedom and justice, which is not within the code of their ethics as per your definition. However, we have very brilliant newspapers from Nepal, a few of these, include:
1. Gorkhapatra
2. Rising Nepal
3. Nishpaksha (Ram Prasad Khanal must be awarded for his hard works--- perhaps in the next cabinet reshuffle)
4. Janadharana (Please read today's article by Nimkanta Panday for praising our beloved minister Jagat Gauchan)
5. Madhupark
6. Yubamanch
7. Nepaljapan.com

Future of Nepal lies in these nice newspapers!!

So, we should start not to open Kantipur, Nepalnews.com, NewsofNepal, BBC, Nepalipost.com, Janaaastha. We should boycott them because they favor democracy. Can we make an organization to stop Nepalese read these bastard newspapers?

Jay hos Gorkhapatrako !!!

Crypto,

I dont think that Nepalnews and Kantipur are anti government. They guys, I believe are anti corruption, aganist priviledges, aganist feudal order.

In short, they are for market oriented democracy, without any feudal priviledges.

Crackingdown media is taking place outside Kathmandu, so it is clear govt policy has not changed.

The current strategy in Nepal is a SLOW POISION approach. YOu dont kill a thing once, you kill it in bits and pieces. Its the same way how India is eating our sovereignty, Its the same way How the americans killed OSHO Rajnish.

KG definitely wants to look different from the brutal feudal dictatorship which he represents.

I think the point here is that the government has not stopped Kantipur, Nepalnews.com, NewsofNepal, Nepalipost.com, Janaaastha etcetera from publishing their point of views.

Nepalis can't be happy with anything. Previously the government was practically stopping anyone from publishing anything negative about the government and that was very bad and anti democratic.
But, now it seems like the government is allowing for these publications to have their freedom. Which is a step in the right direction, however bitter we are about the other aspects of the government. We should recognize this and see how we can mobilize these newspapers to get across to the masses in the fight for democracy.
