Definitely, Dharan is one of the best places, i would say in the world, to live! As Pakheey Ji has pointed out it earlier about Laafada bajii, be aware of it. Additionally, there are few individuals from some particular group who knowingly or unknowingly practice some degree of racisms which is relatively greater in magnitude than that found in most of the other Cities/Towns in Nepal. There were times when many Newar, Madwari and Bahun/Chetri fled from Dharan to Itahari and Biratnagar and other eastern and southern Nepal supposedly due to their intimidating neighbors and their spoiled kids. In some instances, Doctors at BPKIHS (also popularly, known as Ghopa camp in Eastern Nepal) were having very difficult time to treat patients due to the imposing threats from the patient?s uneducated/ignorant relatives who do not seem to know the capability and limitations of a Doctor and medical profession in general. After expressing some negativism about Dharan, one can not escape without appreciating the great residents of Dharan for their persistent and enduring efforts to keep Dharan as a paradise, importantly, investment of their own money and sweat to build coal tarred streets and making Dharan as clean as could be. Besides some social issues (some sort of social illness is always prevalent in almost all of cities/towns of the world), Dharan is a paradise!

Please note that this is a personal view of this respondent who is not a resident of Dharan but was born and had spent his precious 17 years in a city/town that is some 25 KM south eastern of it (I guess, a neighbor keeps a good record of you!).

I can vouch for the food - pork chilli and momo in 'downtown' (I forget the exact street). And the tongba at Hile - man, that was something!

धन्यबाद सञजयजी, तर यो छाता चोकमा त घरमात्र देख्छु, त्यस्तो घर जहाँपनि हुन्न र?

Dharan is Beautiful but KATHMANDU IS STILL THE BEST.

(How can I not like the place where I was born, the place where I grew up, the place where I made so many friend, the place where I fell in love with the girl for the first time, the place where I had my heart broken for the first time? I had map of Kathmandu inside my head, I knew where they sold momo, I knew where they sold puri-tarkari, I knew where they sold chatamari, I knew where they sold best chyang in Kathmandu. I love Kathmandu, there is no other place like Kathmandu, I have my memories about Kathmandu and that itself is worth a trillion).

But Dharan is really beautiful, when I went there for the first time when I was in my early teen, I was really mesmerised. I remember budha-subbha's temple, and the story we read about Budha subba when we were kids. I remember the hill, from which the main road drives you straight to the downtown. I remember bore-meat, and above all, farshi momo. I remember picturesque view of the hill and pink flowers when you look up from the downtown. I loved the houses there, I loved the trees, the roads.
