Nepal is located on the tectonic plates and lies in a seismically active region. It is said, we have had many devastating earthquakes in the past. Unfortunately, the record of historical earthquakes is not complete which poses a grave problem in assessing the recurrence period of great earthquakes. If we were to face a catastrophical one at this time when we live in utter chaos.... what would the outcome be??

It is not IF but WHEN the catestrophe caused by earthquake will hit Kathmandu. With close to zero attention given by the government to this forthcoming disaster and the abundance of flimsily built houses, I am afraid there will most certainly be huge number of casualties. I think it behooves each of us to think about this ticking bomb and take necessary precautions personally.

Infinity, what a important question u have raised. Unfortunately, u couldn't evoke any response from the sajhabasis. Yes, as u mentioned a 'BIG' earthquake in our region is an eventuality - it can occur anytime - now, after a year, after 10 years or after 50 years. Urban centers like KTM are going to suffer the most - maybe 90% of the houses will crumble down in such densly populated areas if shaken by an earthquake of high magnitude ( 7.0 or above). Hundreds of thousands of people wouldl also perish.

Infinity. Thanks for starting the thread. There are lots of lessons we (as concerned Nepalis) could learn from disaster responses to both the Indian Ocean Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. wtf, I assume you were joking...
