Well, Matrix, I think you are being a little insensitive here. Gay community in Nepal is pretty harshly treated by the authorities... They need a break.

It about time someone said "Gay and Nepal" in the same breath. It is hiding your head in the sand to think that there are no gays in Nepal. Why does it make you laugh. You could be a closet queer. At least these people have a friend who will give them a few paisa to get their lives in order. What are you doing for your people from here? Elton John was not afraid to speak the truth and share his good fortune with others. Now I guess we can look for some corrupt Nepali politician to find a way to pocket the money for himself instead of letting it go for its intended purpose. Nepal will never change until we get rid of corrupt politicians and people who feel bigger if they can bash the little guys.

ok about gays in nepal, may be i am a bit too traditional but i believe that homosexuality is not acceptable according to our religious beliefs.all the religions in the world condem homosexuality.so i am finding it to hard to accept that the much hyped gay lifestyle of america and europe has touched nepal too. about elton john, its his money i won't comment about him giving money to the NGO but then i feel that people who are concerned about preserving our culture and religion should also start doing something.

Bhumi gh, How is homosexuality not acceptable according to your religious beliefs? Is there a particular sloka in Buddhist text that condemns it? Is there a mention in Gita or Vedas that forbids it? I am assuming here you are either Hindu or Buddhist, but even if you are Muslim or Christian or Shamanist or any of the divinist, pray tell, how is your religious belief against homosexuality? Just curious.

Very interesting views and ideas. From what I understand Hinduism neither promotes nor discourages homsexuality. I am not a religious expert and have not read all the Upanishads and Vedas but this is what I have been told and found from my readings and research (read google searches). This is also in line with my own expectations and understanding of the religion - a religion with a spirit of tolerance and co-existence of differences. Hinduism, I feel and hope at least some of you will agree, is an evolving religion constantly re-defined by what and who Hindus are. And if there are gays and lesbians amongst us then all I can say is Pashupati Nath le hami sabai ko kalyan garun - gay or straight! Homosexulaity , like hetrosexuality, can be part of our collective identity. These are not merely words of bravado I am throwing out on a public forum to be a hero - my life has been touched, and unexpectely so, by some of this - which I'll leave to be a story for another time:) . All I can say at this time is one the finest people I have met is a person who happens to be a Nepali and a lesbian. Prior to meeting her and learning about her sexuality , I was basically indifferent towards the issues of sexual minorities in Nepal but today I feel people like her deserve no less in terms of freedom, human rights and respect than the rest of us. (And no, this has nothing to do with me falling in love with a lesbian or experimenting with homosexuality - alas I have not been lucky enough to do the former and do not have the inclination to do the latter.) Just my thoughts - with good will towards all malice towards none. Happy Vijaya Dashami!
