Folks want the American Dream and they want it NOW. On credit.

For the last hundred and fifty years, the American dream involved a struggle against odds. Struggle is gauche nowadays. If something is not handed to you, you watch TV until it is. The dream was American because America offered the *option* for social mobility. Of course, in today's world, the American dream is not *uniquely* American (it never was, as immigration statistics clearly show a number of people followed what could only be called the South American Dream or the African Dream).

The American Dream has never, never been a right. It has never been a promise nor even something that a majority of people can obtain. It is not a reward for following a formula. It is, simply a brilliant possible future for those who want to try to obtain it through hard work and integrity.

ho ta ni!

and it was referred to as the american dream simply because people came to america to try to achieve a better life- but most of the people at the time were coming from europe and, so, in that sense, it really is more the european dream!

the american dream is the biggest marketing gimmick of the last two centuries. and one of the reasons for it's success is that it's so vague. but i agree with matrix rose and don't think that americans have monopoly over the kind of dreams that are considered to be american.

The American dream was at one time to be better off then your parents were...defined by financial stability, the house with the white picket fence in the suburbs, and a better life for your children. But somewhere this dream went terribly wrong.

Now Americans are preoccupied on materialism and having "stuff." The American dream is no longer a better life for you and your family, but having more then the guy who lives next door. Jealousy, envy, mistrust, and greed now fuel the American dream. Suburban sprawl, with three SUVs in every driveway, a summer home in the country, and all the other materialistic nonsense that was once reserved for only the wealthy and elite.

The expectation now is that a good education should result in a six figure salary...gone are the values of hard work to get ahead, honesty and integrity. It's no longer what you know but who you know, and the endless cycle of political maneuvering, ass kissing, and stepping on others to get ahead dominates the corporate landscape.

Providing a better life for your children now translates into spoiling them rotten, without being burdened by the inconvenience of actually having to raise them.

The American dream is out of control....(if it ever was one)

I never said it CAN'T be achieved. i said said its HARD. Since you all are talkin bout American Dream, The typical american dream is:

Have a house with sona by the side of a lake, have a boat, jetsky, a truck, a sports car, watchin soap the whole day for women and those kinda stuff. Just having a good life!!Now how many of american themselves do you all think can achieve all these in their life time?? on top of that the rest of the world is behind that dream too!!

Rose's take on the quote American dream unquote pretty much echoes my own sentiments. The charm of the much talked about 'promised land' has lost its customary lustre somewhat and the efficacy of its usage too has been significantly diluted in the present day world scenario. Social dynamics would have much to answer for what apeares to be slowly declining trend - I don't have raw statistics to go with my deduction but generally speaking, that's what's happening, I think. I see one potent reason for all this: globalisation. With the ever fast pace of technological advancements which look set to reach a revolutionary proportion, the process of becoming this world one big village has begun in earnest. Sceptics dismiss this concept as a mere Romantic utopian dream. Yes a 'dream' in its literal sense perhaps, or maybe not quite so, when one considers the bigger picture. I have all the luxury of talking to you all from my cosy office with a click of a button - isn't that just one big example of how this world has come to shrink? With its power dynamics also slowly shifting towards the left, the world landscape looks set to change considerably in another decades or so. The steady rise of the 'tiger economies' in the Far East and especially China/India's fast booming economy, world's largest economy America may well have tough time holding on to its supremacy as the 'only' world player. I read elsewhere that China's GDP is set to surpass that of Great Britain and Fran in the year 2006/07 and that of America in 2041.

I won't be surprised if Mandarin will one day be a global language replacing English but that's something our future generations will live to see it happen in the fullness of time.

My own thoughts. Good night.
Carpe diem.

m-rose, i couldn't agree with you more! and i couldn't have said it better. so i will say nothing as there is nothing left to say.... (;-D)

actually, the american dream is just an absurd generalization. who doesn't want a better life for oneself and for one's children?!?! but what "a better life" means is something different to everyone.
