There have been a lots of good political discussions in this site, some of which are very genuine. You all must have given this a thought: How suitable is our national anthem at this present time?
I somehow is against the current national anthem which was written quite a while back ... I don't know when. May be it was suitable at that time but now...? I think it doesn't carry any weight, doesn't mention anything about peace, harmony, love amongst the citizens. I'm sure everyone knows the words but I'm trying to put it here just in case someone have forgotten:
Shri man gambhira nepali
Prachanda pratapi bhupati
Shreepaanch sarkar maharaja dhiraja ko sada rahos unnati
rakhun chirayu isha le
Praja failiyos, pukarau jai prem le
Hamiiii nepali saara le

Folks, do you see any words that talks about the development of the country? Any message for peace and harmony?
It surely talks about giving more births which we probably don't need anymore. Funny side... it is trying to make "Prachande" strong and make king "live" longer. Both are against the development and peace.. at least I believe.
I think we have many other songs which are very patriotic and makes people jink when heard. That is whats needed in the national anthem, to make the people think about thier country, touches their hearts. How about songs like:
Rato ra chandra surya, jangi nishana hamro
Jiudo ragat sari yo, baldo yo saan hamro
Yo janmidai jaagat ma kayaun prahar aaye
Samrajya dui haare haarena saan hamro
or
Hati haina dati ladne nepali ko bani huncha
kaile najhukne seer utheko swabhimani nepali huncha
bishwo ko kuna kapcha ma khoja, nepali ko mutu ma hera
tyaha singo nepal huncha, tyaha tinkune jhanda huncha (sorry I changed some words here as I don't think that word is suitable either!)

These songs may also have some words that are not worhty singing or listening, but you folks got my idea, where I'm trying to go with this.

These are my 2 cents, please feel free to give your thoughts - positive and negetive.. both are welcome!

P.S. Shan dai, how about starting a poll on this agenda in Sajha?

I think this might be the best one:

Baneko cha pahara le yo chati mero
Bageko cha chahara ragat ma mero
Pakhero ma janmi takura ma khelne
ma jhukdai najhukne nepal ko choro

Khoseko roti le mero pet bharinna
mageko dhoti le mero laas chopinna
ghotiyare haat pau jharijaun
tara koi aagadi yi haat jodinna

ma aago sahanchu anyaya sahanna
ma trishna sahanchu tiraskar sahanna
mero seer udau baru tyo sahanchu
tara koi paraya le teke sahanna, teke sahanna

Well first of all we have to take into consideration the history of Nepal since its unification.
Nepalover, the issue of national anthem is vital for changing times like these.
Let me put it bluntly our society is based upon hypocritic thoughts. We praise violence of brave gorkhalis for their violent nature at the same time we are proud of our Buddhist heritage. Our history offers us double sided glory. One that is full of violence which is very recent dating back to Prithivi Narayan Shah and our culture that is based upon hindu/buddhist philosophy.
The basis of which is non-violence.Let me give you an example the "law of manu" which is infact law of hinduism asserts non-violence as the first rule of hinduism."Ahimsa Paramo-dhrama".That law was violated countless times by many fundamentalist hindu ritual performers and hero-worshippers for their personal reasons. The only hindu kingdom of the world has violated the first law of hinduism by giving birth to and later by endorsing violent measures for the glory of the kingdom.
The worst picture is visualized when a violent crown prides itself for having to be a monarch of a land which gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama.Prince of Kapilvastu infact endorsed and encouraged the principle of "non-violance" which is the core of hindu thoughts.Later hindu kings simply turned their back to these very foundation of hinduism and simply ruled by the swords.
contd...

History of Nepal has never encouraged peace and harmony.Let me put this bluntly too the government of Nepal has advertised Buddha and Lumbini for attracting dollars which always ended up in the pockets of corrupt officers for nothing more and nothing less.We as Nepalis find it offensive to see Lumbini being appeared as Siddhartha' s birth place in some foreign newspaper but we don't complain the deficiency of buddha's teaching in our text books.Instead we study about our kings who lived praising violance in every step.
contd..

*I meant Lumbini in india...we find its offensive*But where in the text book have we gone detail about the journey and teachings of Buddha instead we have shree 3 and shree 5 all over bombarded in our text books. And what where their glory nothing but grred and jealosy leading to violance and killings the exact opposite of what Buddha had taught.
And those were the times of Chakrapani Chalise when kings despite their ruthlessness considered the "Prachanda pratapi bhupati"....our national anthem is praise to the king and the crownregardless of his fascist manners.Unlike any other national anthems of the globe it hints nowhere to love one's country.National anthem are meant to make you proud of your motherland not the ruler who rules by force. In our case its exactly opposite.

"Praja failiyos, pukarau jai prem le "

Back in my school days, we used to sing it as "haija failyos" (not aloud in front of teachers of course, natra ta bhautik karbahi ko dar ni). The logic was to control population :)

I can think of a few more songs that are more suitable as a national anthem in the current context. Sriman gambhir is more like a Gyane gaan than a rastriya gaan.

One of my favorites is:

Malai pyaro lagcha malai ramro lagcha
lahara pahara chhahara ko desh
wari pari himal ma udirahane badala ko desh
mero desh

Bhola Rijal ko "mero pauwa paati lai" pani suitable nai hola, but that song kinda focuses more on rural development and ignores urban development :)

A few more I can think of are:

Desh le ragat maagay malai bali chadhau

Yo janma bhumi ko angan ma karma ko jagaran
prastut garera dekhau yaha ko dharti banjho chaina (sabda golmal bhae jasto lagcha hai)

I also strongly agree with nepalover's choice "baneko cha paharale."

In general the songs should reflect our natural and cultural heritage, the need for unity, peace and development etc. rather than just praising the Narayanhiti folks.

Wow, I never thought of all those key things "Prachanda pratapi" re
ani Shi pach ko sadhai rahos unnati re.
It's almost like Chakrapani chalise wrote this while someone was foretelling him the future or something!!!!!!!
Or maybe prachanda chose his name as prachanda because he saw this as an opportunity to popularize himself even in a song!!!
Anyways, I think its time someone etched out a new nepali song. A song that doesnt focus on population growth, or on prachanda or shree 5 or 6 or 7 or whatever. A song that reflects Nepali culture and history, a song that reflects a transition from our ancestors as Khukuri wearing warriors to us as "phultin" carrying poets of science and progress.
What say you? JAI NEPAL!!!!

Two probable candidates in my opinion,

रातो र चन्द्र-सूर्य जंगी निशान हाम्रो.............. by Gopal Prasad Rimal

and

सुनको दिन एक उदाऊँछ रे
यस देश खुलीकन आऊँछ रे......... by Laxmi Prasad Devkota

I agree with Izen about the violence that were followed in the past by the Kings in the love of crown. But that aside, I think the demand of the 21st century in our country is not to promote violence or even the population growth. We need a sing that can give you goose bumps when you listen to it or sing it. Not to be in favor of India but their national anthem is so impressive and even United states. I hope, in the near future. probably after outkasting Gyane, we need to opt for changing the national anthem.

Baneko cha Paharale yo chati mero
Bageko cha chahara ragat ma mero
Pakhuri ma janmi takura ma khelne
ma jhukdai najhukne Nepal ko choro (may be someone will find this sexist and make an argument... why not chori?)
But, I still think this could be one of the best amongst all the patriotic songs we have thus far.
Jai Nepal .... I like it timetraveller

Yea, lets start something guys, right here on Sajha, LETS MAKE IT HISTORIC. Lets combine technology(the Internet) and our love for our birthland( or our cultural birthland for some of us who were born here), to create a new National Anthem for Nepal. We'll post it here, it could be a remix(to address the sexist opinion that could arise as per Nepalover's statement) but not crappy remix, a remix with our Nepalese instruments in them, no YAMAHA blah blah audio mixer stuff. Or it could be something completely original. Creative.
What say you brethren????
Jai Nepal.

Nepalover,
Moderation should be the first step while considering the new national anthem formula I think.Too much of our own praise will make it look all nepalis facists too.Remember fascism grew out of narrow minded nationalism. Our love for peace and our longing for optimism despite dark days of hardships....a combination of peaceful co-existance despite our differences plus our determination and desire to remain optimistic for what the future holds....Most of our "Rastriya Geet" emphasize too much on our brave gorkhali heritage and poetic-tone for our geography...but not our inner-stregth of peacefulness the greatest strength of all.
Peace and optimism....trust narrow-minded self praising nationalism leads to fascist society as well.

Trust me I meant the narrow minded self-praising nationalistic view can lead all of us back to the dark days.

i agree with izen. something that truly captures the essence on Nepal should be portrayed. Most of our songs are always about what we have(such as mountains, hills, brave past) Thats good, but what about an outlook into the fuure? One of the songs I read for SLC was "Kalamveer" by Madhav Prasad ghimire, and thats the only poem I can truly remember cuz it had some sense to it, "no more khukuri-veer, lets be kalam-veer."

I think that poem should be the next national anthem. At least it reminds you to become a reader everytime you sing it in your high school assembly and not your king or anti-contraceptive messages (I'm referring to "praja failiyos")
Jai Nepal.
