why would a country spend billions of dollars in its army if it aint planning on doing something with.. especially states....

if u ask me..just tryn to do the following...prevention is better than cure...scare them and make them think twice before they strike..all about tryn to get over their doubts..make oneself feel stronger..u know how we seem to do that?humanly thing to do?;oP hehe..or another humanly thing is to provide jobs and dun let the them bum around and ironically send them to die that is just a war about pride..:o) etc etc etc........

If you see in WW II a lot of places were conquered by Hitler just because their army was not prepared. And in todays world there are constant threats from terrorists and also from the nations who are preparing or HAVE nuclear weapons. If USA did not have the army and was not prepared for a war, former USSR would have attacked it during the Cold War. The main reason there was not a real war between them was due to the fact that both the nations would be completely destroyed, had there been a war between them. The only reason that might prevent WW III is due to the fear of world destruction due to the massive army and their equipments. Hence, as said by my Big B, it is a sort of preparation for anything in the future and also a sort of prevention of any massive wars in the future!

Here i would have to disagree.
Hitler was able to conquer because he was able to unite germans and mobilized them to capture their pride lost because of WW I treaties.
Germans worked hard. they had better technology and an ambition.. restoration of self-respect.
not because other side was not prepared. Britain, france were on steadfast aleartness.
Russia was contained because Hitler had a treaty [ before he attacked them .. which was the culprit of his downfall]

I agree with Rhythm. One of the main reasons why Hitler was successful taking over so many countries was because his armies caught the armies of other countries unprepared.
Most of the countries were still rebuilding themselves from WWI while Hitler was preparing for another war. Europeans saw WWI being even more devastating than WWII. Countries were not that reluctant to go for war during WWI because most of them thought it would be a quick and easy one like most Napoleonic wars. In the contrary it proved to be a devastating war.
So yes, while other countries were trying to move on from WWI, Hitler?s armies were preparing themselves for war.

Only history will justify the war that America has involved itself with today.The real intentions of the logic behind the unilateral invasion is already questionable.The biased foreign policies of the administration is the real reason of anti-americanism that is widespread more than ever in the past.We as Nepalese like to sling ourselves on a safer side totally relying on mainstream medias and powerful actors of world politics.Iraq is a Vietnam Part- two,undoubtedly.
If Americans had a maniac ruling them even during cold-war era,diplomacy would have failed and the hunt for the red october would have come alive.Instead americans had Kennedy who was a statesman not a cowboy and thanks we are alive.
Back to the Fuhrer.Hitler was elected democratically.Germans chorused Hitler's vision for an empire thogh it failed him ultimately.
Diplomacy did work avoiding more gas chambers giving rise to a new world order with superpowers who embraced two completely opposite ideological stance.Communism failed with the disintegration of USSR or has it?
Has the sole superpower worked together with the world community or alienating it by simply investing money for god knows what reasons.Weapons have never answered the call for peace nor has war delivered an absolute peace.Even the fathers of the land have stated,"The world has not known a good war and a bad peace".

One of the strategies that Hitler used was to attack places when they were not prepared. I do believe that Britain had started to prepare for a war as its alleis were already captured and as Germany had a treaty with the USSR, they did not have any other place to go for support and USA had not joined WW II yet. As for France, they did not want Paris to be involved as they had a lot of things in the city they did not want to destroy. They surrended Paris without a war. And the other parts werent prepared either so they surendered just days after Paris did. As of Russia, it was not prepared but thanks to their cold weather, Germans could not give it their best. It was astonishing how fast Russia prepared itself for war though! And well I guess Poland was captured because of its unpreparedness too.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think Hitler's greatest strategy was to go into nations when they least expected it! And bingo! :)

other countried were rejoicing the settlement with the germany's payment. they had enough personnel to fight if they wanted. it was never that they did not expected it


France,
gave up due to internal conflict. and because of the self indulgent desires of vichey. they had two groups of generals. vichey french group of rulers who supported hitler's agression to preserve their existence and their wealth. petin was the vichey general who turned against them and lead the revolution effort later. and if you remember Charles de gaulle was the general who Roosevelt hated but was in britian gathering help to fight german when german invaded and vichey decided to give up...
