Police Hit Man in Genitals With Taser

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - Police accidentally hit a naked man in the genitals with a Taser after he was caught breaking windows and asking women to touch him, authorities said.

Jeremy J. Miljour, 26, tried to run away when sheriff's deputies approached so one of them shot their Taser, said Cpl. Matt Chitwood. But one of the gun's prongs accidentally hit Miljour's genitals and got stuck, Chitwood said.

"The Taser is relatively accurate, but when someone is moving like that, it doesn't matter if you have a Taser, or a pistol. (Officers) can't aim," Chitwood said.

Miljour was treated at a hospital before being taken to the Lee County jail. He was charged with indecent exposure, resisting an officer and criminal damage

Teen With Peanut Allergy Dies After Kiss

SAGUENAY, Quebec - A 15-year-old girl with a peanut allergy died after kissing her boyfriend, who had just eaten a peanut butter snack, hospital officials said Monday.

Christina Desforges died in a Quebec hospital Wednesday after doctors were unable to treat her allergic reaction to the kiss the previous weekend.

Desforges, who lived in Saguenay, about 155 miles north of Quebec City, was almost immediately given a shot of adrenaline, a standard tool for treating the anaphylactic shock brought on by a peanut allergy, officials said.

An autopsy was being performed. Dr. Nina Verreault, an allergist at the Chicoutimi Hospital in Saguenay, declined to comment on the case.

The symptoms of peanut allergy can include hives, plunging blood pressure and swelling of the face and throat, which can block breathing.

Peanut allergies have been rising in recent decades. The reason remains unclear but one study found that baby creams or lotions with peanut oil may cause children to develop allergies later in life.

About 1.5 million Americans are severely allergic to even the smallest trace of peanuts and peanut allergies account for 50 to 100 deaths in the United States each year. Canadian figures were not immediately available.

The rapping grans

Think of rap and what springs to mind - ghetto gangsters, guns and bling-bling jewellery?

Well this group are breaking the mould.

The Silver wRappers are now taking on the likes on Eminem and 50 Cent.

The group, which will rap at the Sage Gateshead in December, have only been together since January.

Story continues

The group of 12 over-50s came together through a partnership between Newcastle College and the Sage Gateshead.

And it wasn't long before the Silver wRappers, part of the Silver Strand - the umbrella name for all courses for over-50s - were soon writing their own songs.

Margaret Hall, an 80-year-old from South Shields, travels to the Sage Gateshead several times a week to rehearse.

She said: "It's absolutely fascinating. I had no idea of what rap was. Now I know it stands for rhythm and poetry.

"We are learning a lot and having fun at the same time. I look forward to attending every week."

And another rapper, Ann Moore, 65 from Bedlington, said: "My grandaughter thinks it's brilliant that I'm in a rap group and has said I should go for it.

"It just shows that although we are over 50 we shouldn't be written off. We still have a lot to give and a lot to say.

"I also think there the course is great as it gives us an inter-generational link. My grandaughter now calls me Mrs Puff Daddy."

Gilly Love, the Sage Gateshead's Silver Strand leader, who also came up with the idea, said: "It has been a very interesting experience for everyone involved.

"Some members merely associated rap with the likes of Eminem and Puff Daddy, while others had no idea what rap was all about.

"Creating the lyrics for the raps has been great fun and certainly a learning experience for everyone.

"We talked about so many topics - politics, Christmas presents, getting old and the stereotypes that come with it and much more.

"Our lyrics are unique and mean something different to each of the 12 students.

"The challenge of finding a rhythmic musical backing more appropriate to the age group than hip-hop has been exciting and interesting too."

The Silver wRappers are made up of people from hugely diverse backgrounds and are a variety of ages.

Others in the group agreed that while they were nervous at first, they are now definite rap fans.

They said they are pleased to be learning and thinking through rap and they believe it is now a great new medium in which they can express themselves freely.

Woman has first face transplant

The woman had lost her nose, lips and chin after being savaged by a dog.

In the controversial operation, tissues, muscles, arteries and veins were taken from a brain-dead donor and attached to the patient's lower face.

Doctors stress the woman will not look like her donor, but nor will she look like she did before the attack - instead she will have a "hybrid" face.

It has been technically possible to carry out such a transplant for some years, with teams in the US, the UK and France researching the procedure.

Skin from another person's face is better for transplants as it will be a better match than skin from another part of the patient's body, which could have a different texture or colour.

But the ethical concerns of a face transplant, and the psychological impact to the patient of looking different has held teams back.

Concerns relating to immunosuppression, psychological impact and the consequence of technical failure have so far prevented ethical approval of the procedure in the UK, though doctors here are full able to perform transplants.

'Gravely disfigured'

The 38-year-old French patient from the northern French town of Valenciennes underwent extensive counselling before her operation, which is believed to have lasted at least five hours, and which took place at the weekend at a hospital in Amiens.

The French magazine Le Point reports that the tissues, muscles, arteries and veins needed for the transplant were taken from a multi-organ donor in the northern city of Lille, who was brain-dead.

The operations were carried out by a team led by Professor Bernard Devauchelle and Professor Jean Michel Dubernard.

In a statement, the hospital said the woman had been gravely disfigured in the attack in May this year.

She has been unable to speak or eat properly since.

It added that the woman - who wishes to remain anonymous - was in "excellent general health" and said the graft looked normal

Like any other transplant patient, the woman will have to take immunosuppressant drugs to help her body cope with the donated tissue.

Doctors working in the field say many could benefit from the procedure, including 10,000 burns victims in the UK.

Iain Hutchison, an oral-facial surgeon at Barts and the London Hospital, said: "This is the first face transplant using skin from another person."

But there are medical, and ethical, concerns of facial transplants.

Mr Hutchison, who is chief executive of Saving Faces - the Facial Surgery Research Foundation, warned blood vessels in the donated tissue could clot, the immunosuppressants could fail - and would increase the patient's risk of cancer."

Mr Hutchison added there were ethical and moral issues around donating facial tissue.

"Where donors would come from is one issue that would have to be considered.

"The transplant would have to come from a beating heart donor. So, say your sister was in intensive care, you would have to agree to allow their face to be removed before the ventilator was switched off.

"And there is the possibility that the donor would then carry on breathing."

Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society's ethics committee, said: "The extent of facial expression which will occur in the long term is unknown.

"The skin tends to promote rejection by the immune system very strongly and immunosuppression is likely to need to be kept at high levels for prolonged periods of time.

"It is not clear whether an individual could be left worse off in the event that a face transplant failed."

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon's facial transplantation working party, said: "If successful, this is a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction.

"It appears that this has been a partial face transplant incorporating the nose and lips; therefore issues relating to similarity in appearance between donor and recipient are unlikely to be a major problem.

"We wish the patient and the team a successful outcome and look forward to learning more about the details of the procedure which could be a major step forward for the facially disfigured."

Woman burns dad to death

MALACCA: Police are looking for a mentally-ill woman who allegedly splashed her sleeping father with petrol and set him alight.

The 72-year-old man, who was rushed to Muar Hospital, later died.

Deputy state CID chief Supt Ariffin Sutan said a murder inquiry was underway. He added that the 33-year-old woman had apparently left the family home in Jalan Salim Sebatu, Sungai Rambai on a motorcycle after the incident yesterday.

The man's 68-year-old wife said she was shocked to see her husband on fire.

?I tried to douse the fire as we fled the house,? she said.

She said her husband had quarrelled with their daughter a few days ago, after she refused to take her medication.

Professor Loses Weight With No-Diet Diet

SALT LAKE CITY - When Steven Hawks is tempted by ice cream bars, M&Ms and toffee-covered almonds at the grocery store, he doesn't pass them by. He fills up his shopping cart.

It's the no-diet diet, an approach the Brigham Young University health science professor used to lose 50 pounds and to keep it off for more than five years.

Hawks calls his plan "intuitive eating" and thinks the rest of the country would be better off if people stopped counting calories, started paying attention to hunger pangs and ate whatever they wanted.

As part of intuitive eating, Hawks surrounds himself with unhealthy foods he especially craves. He says having an overabundance of what's taboo helps him lose his desire to gorge.

There is a catch to this no-diet diet, however: Intuitive eaters only eat when they're hungry and stop when they're full.

That means not eating a box of chocolates when you're feeling blue or digging into a big plate of nachos just because everyone else at the table is.

The trade-off is the opportunity to eat whatever your heart desires when you are actually hungry.

"One of the advantages of intuitive eating is you're always eating things that are most appealing to you, not out of emotional reasons, not because it's there and tastes good," he said. "Whenever you feel the physical urge to eat something, accept it and eat it. The cravings tend to subside. I don't have anywhere near the cravings I would as a 'restrained eater.'"

Hawks should know. In 1989, the Utah native had a job at North Carolina State University in Raleigh and wanted to return to his home state. But at 210 pounds, he didn't think a fat person could get a job teaching students how to be healthy, so his calorie-counting began.

He lost weight and got the job at Utah State University. But the pounds soon came back.

For several years his weight fluctuated, until he eventually gave up on being a restrained eater and the weight stayed on.

"You definitely lose weight on a diet, but resisting biological pressures is ultimately doomed," Hawks said.

Several years later and still overweight at a new job at BYU, Hawks decided it was time for a lifestyle change.

He stopped feeling guilty about eating salt-and-vinegar potato chips. He also stopped eating when he wasn't hungry.

Slowly and steadily his weight began to drop. Exercise helped.

His friends and co-workers soon took notice of the slimmer Hawks.

"It astonished me, actually," said his friend, Steven Peck. "We were both very heavy. It was hard not to be struck."

After watching Hawks lose and keep the weight off for a year and a half, Peck tried intuitive eating in January.

"I was pretty skeptical of the idea you could eat anything you wanted until you didn't feel like it. It struck me as odd," said Peck, who is an assistant professor at BYU.

But 11 months later, Peck sometimes eats mint chocolate chip ice cream for dinner, is 35 pounds lighter and a believer in intuitive eating.

"There are times when I overeat. I did at Thanksgiving," Peck said. "That's one thing about Steve's ideas, they're sort of forgiving. On other diets if you slip up, you feel you've blown it and it takes a couple weeks get back into it. ... This sort of has this built-in forgiveness factor."

The one thing all diets have in common is that they restrict food, said Michael Goran, an obesity expert at the University of Southern California. Ultimately, that's why they usually fail, he said.

"At some point you want what you can't have," Goran said. Still, he said intuitive eating makes sense as a concept "if you know what you're doing."

Intuitive eating alone won't give anyone six-pack abs, Hawks said, but it will lead to a healthier lifestyle. He still eats junk food and keeps a jar of honey in his office, but only indulges occasionally.

"My diet is actually quite healthy. ... I'm as likely to eat broccoli as eat a steak," he said. "It's a misconception that all of a sudden a diet is going to become all junk food and high fat," he said.

In a small study published in the American Journal of Health Education, Hawks and a team of researchers examined a group of BYU students and found those who were intuitive eaters typically weighed less and had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease than other students.

He said the study indicates intuitive eating is a viable approach to long-term weight management and he plans to do a larger study across different cultures. Ultimately, he'd like intuitive eating to catch on as a way for people to normalize their relationship with food and fight eating disorders.

"Most of what the government is telling us is, we need to count calories, restrict fat grams, etc. I feel like that's a harmful message," he said. "I think encouraging dietary restraint creates more problems. I hope intuitive eating will be adopted at a national level."

Man loses dead cert bet -- by staying alive

LONDON (Reuters) - A 91-year-old man who staked a 500-pound bet that he would be dead by the end of the first week in December lost his stake by staying alive, a bookmaker said on Saturday.

Arthur King-Robinson said he put the bet on at odds of 6/1 at the start of the year because his wife would have faced an inheritance tax bill of 3000 pounds had he died in the intervening period.

"I thought I'd heard most things that people want to bet on after 30 years in the business," said Graham Sharpe, spokesman for bookmaker William Hill. "But one asking literally to place a dead cert was unique. I'm glad Arthur has lost."

King-Robinson had feared that his wife Cynthia, 85, would have to sell the home they had lived in for 50 years in the southwest if she had been hit by the tax bill.

"I lost my 500 pounds -- but it gave me peace of mind," he said.

Malaysian Indian buried as Muslim after Hindu widow loses court battle
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- An ethnic Indian Malaysian was buried with Islamic rites Wednesday after his Hindu widow lost a court battle over his religious identity, in a sensational case that has the potential to blow into a racial firestorm.

The High Court ruled in favor of the Islamic Affairs Department, allowing it to take possession of the body of ex-army commando M. Moorthy. The body has been lying in a legal limbo at a Kuala Lumpur hospital since Moorthy's death on Dec. 20 after seven years of paralysis.

The court rejected an appeal by Moorthy's widow, Kaliammal Sinnasamy, who had sought custody of the body, disputing an Islamic Sharia court's ruling last week that Moorthy, 36, was a Muslim convert and should be buried as a Muslim.

Soon after the ruling, Islamic Affairs officials took over the body, washed it according to Islamic rites and draped it in a white shroud for burial in a Muslim cemetery. A cleric recited prayers over his grave as more than 50 Muslims chanted verses from the Koran.

Kaliammal did not attend but a brother and nephew of Moorthy observed the rites.

The case threatens to blow into a rare interracial and religious dispute in this Muslim-majority nation, which prides itself on religious tolerance among a population that also includes Buddhists, Christians and Hindus.

Haris Mohamad Ibrahim, a lawyer representing Malaysia's Bar Council, blasted the verdict as a "human tragedy."

"So much for good interracial relations," he told reporters. "The judge has just told the widow and her family to go back and leave the body of their beloved to be buried by strangers."

Open friction between Muslims -- who constitute more than 60 percent of Malaysia's 26 million people -- and other minority faiths is rare in Malaysia. Religious affairs of Muslims are governed by the Islamic Sharia Court and others -- who are guaranteed freedom of worship -- by other civilian courts.

The jurisdictions of the two legal branches rarely overlap except in rare cases such as a recent custody battle over the children of a parent who changed his religion and the Moorthy case. But generally civilians judges are loath to question the Shariah court's authority.

In his ruling on the appeal by 30-year-old Kaliammal, High Court judge Raus Sharif said he has no jurisdiction to overrule the Sharia court decision.

"The Sharia court is the court that has jurisdiction in determining the issue of conversions. The civil court has no jurisdiction and cannot conduct a judicial review of this Sharia court verdict," he said.

A weeping Kaliammal did not speak to reporters after the verdict but her lawyer, A. Sivanesan, said she does not consider it a loss.

"She says ... anybody can take the body, but her husband's soul is still with us," Sivanesan said.

Moorthy took part in a nationally feted Malaysian expedition to Mount Everest in 1997. He was paralyzed during army training in 1998 and slipped into a coma last month, at which time his former colleagues told Kaliammal that her husband embraced Islam in October 2004.

The Islamic Affairs Department did not provide documentary proof of the alleged conversion, saying he did it verbally.

Kaliammal says Moorthy was not a Muslim as he continued to drink liquor, eat pork and participate in Hindu religious festivals -- all prohibited by Islam -- even after the purported conversion.

Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang of the Democratic Action Party vowed to raise the issue in Parliament and to call for making it mandatory for authorities to inform family members if religious conversions are to be legally recognized.

"This case reflects poorly on the concept of Islam Hadhari (progressive Islam) advocated by the prime minister. If such matters are left unattended they can cause unhappiness and disharmony," Lim said. (AP)

New erotic kit

The new hi-tech invention of the sex industry allows to enjoy the pleasure of "distant sex."

Each kit contains: a computer board, headphones and a microphone for naughty communication online. Everything is complete with a vibrator or a vagina (depending on user's sex) - they are connected to personal computers through computer boards.

According to instructions, a male partner can control the vibrator of a woman and talk to her on the microphone, whereas the female partner in her turn is able to manipulate the vagina used by a man.

When the sensual system is connected to the computer and the online connection is established with a partner, the screen menu offers a variety of choices: vigorous movements or tender vibrations of a dildo, a strong or a delicate grip of a vagina.

Two partners can thoroughly enjoy the reality of virtual sex with the help of the product - all they have to do is to move a mouse.

He remotely controls the vibrator in a woman's body, while she is remotely in charge of the appropriately used vagina.

Chinese technicians, who participated in the invention of the 190-dollar erotic system, say that everything is reliable and does not lead to any technical malfunctions during operation.

Robbers strip and photograph youth

A ROBBERY victim was forced to strip after he was found to have only RM3 in his pocket, reported Sin Chew Daily.

According to the daily, the 19-year-old youth, who had just started work at a shopping complex for a few days, was talking on the phone when four robbers confronted him.

He was forced to ride pillion on one of the robbers’ motorcycles to a secluded area at about 7.30pm last Friday.

When the robbers found only RM3 in his wallet, they ordered him to strip and photographed him with a camera handphone.

Subang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Muhammad Fuad Talib confirmed that a police report had been lodged, adding that police were tracing the four robbers.

Sin Chew Daily also reported that an Indonesian maid mixed her urine into the tea meant for her employers as revenge.

However, her ploy failed as her employer, who smelt a strange odour, sent the tea for laboratory examination.

The results showed that the tea contained 26% ammonia. Immediately the maid was sent back to the maid agency.

According to the maid, the employer’s seven-year-old son had earlier fondled her thigh, which triggered her discontentment.

Bus driver becomes a human disco

Saturday night fever: Mark Davis is ready for new year celebrations
A bus driver who sported a Christmas tree with lights on his head for a month has turned himself into a disco to see in the new year.
Mark Davis, 31 from Pontypool, south Wales, of Newport Transport, spent the festive season with a fully-decorated fir tree woven into his hair.

His new look sees him with a fully-functioning disco ball on his head, with "2006" shaven into his hair.

Mr Davis said: "I'm going to go even madder for the rest of the year."

Like his previous hairstyle, the new year look, complete with flashing and spinning disco ball, took several hours to create at Mr Davis' local hairdresser.

The style is topped off with metallic spikes and "2006" shaved into his hair.

'Totally crazy'

His original Christmas tree style was popular with passengers and had led to world-wide media attention.

He added: "It went totally crazy. I've even been on a radio show in Canada.

The bus driver sported a festive look in the build-up to Christmas

"I'm world-renowned for my hair. The way it's gone has totally blown me away.

"I haven't had one miserable comment. The kids love it when they get on my bus and I've done it for charity."

Mr Davis, who has previously sported hair designed like a football and a dartboard, plans to adopt further new styles in 2006 despite admitting his Christmas tree look had caused him problems sleeping.

He said: "I've been approached by another charity and I'm going to have a competition to design my hair.

"I've got something planned for Valentine's Day as well."

Mr Davis was sponsored by friends and family to take on the task, though he admitted that wearing the tree at night caused problems sleeping.

As well as the Christmas tree growing out of the top of Mr Davis's head, the original multi-coloured style also included Santa's face on the back of his head and holly.

SHORT BACK AND SOCIALIST

Some haircuts are more equal than others

"Untidy hair and unhealthy attire" among North Korean riff-raff came under attack with the launch of the campaign "Let us trim our hair in accordance with Socialist lifestyle".

Men with hair longer than the regulation 5cm, or who failed to visit the barber every 15 days for a state-approved trim, were warned of the "negative effects" of long hair on "human intelligence development".

CAIRO, Egypt -- Staff members at a Riyadh hospital got a surprise when they looked at the fine print on the paper cups they were using.

Workers in a storeroom at a Dubai hospital were similarly shocked when they took a close look at the tags on a large shipment of uniforms and linens.

The labels said "Made in Israel," according to recent newspaper reports from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, both of which have laws that ban imports from the Jewish state.

Experts say the camouflaged trade has been going on for years between Israel and its officially hostile Arab neighbors.

The hidden trade is worth about $400 million a year - about 2-1/2 times what Israel sold to its official Arab trading partners, Egypt and Jordan, in 2004 - CHINA is stated as saying they are very upset with this trading process.China states they can send a AK-47 and suicide vest with every order of paper cups.

'Doomsday' seed bank to be built

Norway is planning to build a "doomsday vault" inside a mountain on an Arctic island to hold a seed bank of all known varieties of the world's crops.
The Norwegian government will hollow out a cave on the ice-bound island of Spitsbergen to hold the seed bank.

It will be designed to withstand global catastrophes like nuclear war or natural disasters that would destroy the planet's sources of food.

Seed collection is being organised by the Global Crop Diversity Trust.

"What will go into the cave is a copy of all the material that is currently in collections [spread] all around the world," Geoff Hawtin of the Trust told the BBC's Today programme.

Mr Hawtin said there were currently about 1,400 seed banks around the world, but a large number of these were located in countries that were either politically unstable or that faced threats from the natural environment.

"What we're trying to do is build a back-up to these, so that a sample of all the material in these gene banks can be kept in the gene bank in Spitsbergen.

The Norwegian government is due to start work on the seed vault next year, when it will drill into a sandstone mountain on Spitsbergen, part of the Svalbard archipelago, about 966km (600 miles) from the North Pole.

Permafrost will keep the vault below freezing point and the seeds will further be protected by metre-thick walls of reinforced concrete, two airlocks and high security blast-proof doors.

The number of seeds and types of plants in the bank would be determined by the countries wishing to use it.

Man's vigil at wrong hospital bed

A series of errors led to a man holding vigil at the bedside of a woman he wrongly believed to be his sick mother.
Nurses called the man to the Conquest Hospital in Hastings, East Sussex last March, saying his mother was dying.

He identified the wrong patient and sat with her as his real mother lay dead in a nearby room. Another family was wrongly told their mother was dead.

An internal report said a ward virus, which meant patients had to be moved around, added to the confusion.

The report, released under the Freedom of Information Act, reveals the virus had led to an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting.

It was also Mother's Day, with an increased number of visitors on the ward.

When the man's daughter arrived, she recognised that the woman was not her grandmother and the ward team was alerted

Conquest internal report
The man himself identified the wrong patient as his mother. Then, because the patient's wrist band was not checked, staff at the Conquest wrote the wrong name of the patient above her bed.

The two patients were both elderly, looked similar and were unable to speak because of serious illness.

They were receiving similar treatment in adjacent rooms.

The blunder only came to light when the man's daughter arrived at the hospital and realised he was with the wrong woman.

Hospital apology

The report says the man's mistake in identifying the wrong woman as his mother was among several reasons for the mix-up.

He sat with her for a "significant period of time".

"When he entered the room, the white board above the patient's bed did not have a name on it," the report says.

"When the man's daughter arrived, she recognised that the woman was not her grandmother and the ward team was alerted."

After the incident, the hospital apologised for the anxiety and strain caused to both families and said measures were being put in place to ensure it could not happen again.
