j'adore,
With my limited understanding of Cuban revolution, could I post a nutshell of your query...
The corrupt regime of Fascist Batista turning its back to the ordinary Cubans(peasants and workers) and supported by the imperialist big fish beside its mainland the revolutionaries had no other option than to embrace the sound socialist path.To the son of a rich sugarcane farmer Fidel had no other option than to revolt against pro-capitalist corrupt Batista which successfully delivered a Castro regime later backed by the USSR.Like Hushpuppy has mentioned Castro's success to overthrow Batista was mainly due to the visionary "cool dude"like Che Guevara.
We have to be careful as "cool dude"(rapper Jay-Z once wore it without a clue and later to discover his legacy)figure has been marketed for profit-making reasons in capitalist parts. That is the exact attitude Che fought against.Cuban revolution didn't necessarily deliver a just as the revolutionary duo had visioned for.But the revolution did restore the diginity in the hearts of ordinary Cubans which is still unmoved by any external forces however POWERFUL.Every little nations including ours can learn a valuable lessons from the pride and dignity that Cubans demonstrate against big Fishes of the world:) .But things have changed in the recent years Castro's warm meetings with late Pope and the humanitarian US president Jimmy Carter exhibits his soft stance towards the world that he was once displayed hostility.Marxism has failed but so has capitalism.A sound middle path for justice is an urgency at this point and Cuban revolution minus the ideology it embraced can ceratainly teach us that.
Hope that was helpful:)
