Racial violence erupts in Sydney

Thousands of young white men have converged on Cronulla Beach in Sydney, Australia, and attacked people of Arabic and Mediterranean background.
Police and ambulance officers were pelted with beer cans and bottles, and an ambulance was attacked.

Comment: I am so ashamed that this has happened in our country. Watching those so called "patriots" on TV with beer bottles in their hands, chanting racist slogans and draped in the Australian flag made me feel sick to the stomach. People who join in with or condone this sort of behaviour do not deserve to call themselves Australian and should not be wearing our flag.

Idle minds create trouble. Look at nepal...sometimes they have riots for nothing. Example...the hrithik rohan case. I can't believe they actually sabotaged movie halls or whatever they could lay their hands on just for a dumb hero.

As for the sydney ppl..the lebs and wogs...same goes for them. I hardly see them working or making good use of time. I guess this is one of their way of having fun..by creating trouble for other peoples.

What is the situation of Nepalese there, are they ignored, or targeted by one of those gang tribes. It is not a nice scene, when you watch a mob attacking an innocent passerby just because h/she happens to be different. However, it also makes sense to ponder the events in France, UK and now Aus and the growing intolerance.
How will it affect Nepalese living there, we do look different, and who gonna ask you your name and ethnicity before smashing a beer bottle on the head.

What they said was that they were targeting people of color. Mostly people who looked middle-eastern, but then again, many South Asians look like arabs.
Arabs have retaliated by messing up 40+ cars in the vicinity. Seems to me like arabs are really good at starting riots. Many arabs are narrow-minded Quran thumpers, who, instead of assimilating, decide to live with their own, and have a knack for turning a good neighborhood into a cesspool.Sorry, but I don't like fanatics of any backgrounds. Now in this case, I do sympathize with Arabs though.These whites are a bunch of drunk hillbillies as well. A good recipe for a riot. This is just the beginning, mark my words. You're gonna see lots of riots in the near future, and the situation is only gonna exacerbate.
To top it off, arabs are making our lives miserable as well. To Whites, as many of us look no different from Arabs, they're gonna lump us all together. It's a cause for concern.

At least Arab Americans are hardworking. Many of them are Christians of Lebanese and Syrian descent. Ralph Nader, for example, is a Lebanese American.

MORE than 20 people were injured and 16 arrested as race-fuelled violence spread through Sydney's beachside suburbs overnight.

A series of apparent revenge attacks - including two stabbings - happened after yesterday's unrest at Cronulla, where more than 5000 people had massed.

Drunken mobs within the crowd at Cronulla yelled racist chants and bashed people of Middle Eastern appearance in an extended violent rampage.

As the unrest spread overnight, 25 people - including two ambulance officers - had been injured, about 40 cars vandalised and an Australian flag burned.

We asked NEWS.com.au readers if they thought the explosion of beach violence was un-Australian, as many public figures have said, and we have been inundated with responses.

Some people were stabbed!! How can people just stab each other and not feel guilty about it? Makes me wonder!

What is this world turning into? It was UK then France and now Australia. It looks like globalization doesn’t work out as well as it looks in the paper. But one thing that is common in these riots is Arab or Muslim population’s involvement. Like thugged out mentioned, muslims don’t try to assimilate with their host country’s culture. When they immigrate to a different society they bring along their baggage and sideline themselves. Then later they start riots protesting they have been neglected by the government of the country they chose to move into. There are big populations of Chinese, Indians and people of other nations in these countries and yet they do not riot. Some cultures are just prone to violence.

Let's all realize that the UK used to ship all their convicts to Australia. This is a fact, and what's obvious is that "convict" gene seems to manifest itself after a few generations have passed.

I think there are other factors affecting the arabs when it come to these situations. We have to look at the facts regarding middle east. The radical education and ever deterioting and biased western interest in the middle east is one of the main reason regarding communal dispute.

In the foreign land, the minority is alienated. Minorities have to deal with lots of sterotypes. Even in US you have to deal with these sterotypes. Austratlian I have met here is US definately showed the tendency of those acts.

That was incredibly ignorant, racist, moorkha thing to say... appropriately befitting your name, exactly what a thug would say.

Comment: I'm an Australian with Chinese heritage. I think what happened at Cronulla is shameful and un-Australian. I'm proudly singing "We are Australian" because that is what Australia is and we should be proud of it. On the other hand, I also urge the Muslim community to behave better as their attitude recently such as preaching violence and jihad, praising Osama bin Laden, making awful comments about women wearing mini skirts, etc has sparked tension with other communities. We are a very heterogenous society and each community should respect each other.

I saw much of so-called Islamic bravado in some parts of Canada and the US too, to the point that it was offensive to other non-Islamic people. These moslems need to understand that they have now immigrated to multi-ethnic multi-religious nations and their behaviour too need to adapt to this new environment.

Having said that, beating up each other is hardly a way to go. The governments should take necessary steps so that there is harmony in the country.

I thought with your holier-than-thou attitude, you would know better than that. You basically generalized Muslims as being extremely religious . I completely agree with you, but I don't like Muslims. You are openminded, I would have presumed, since you lashed out at me for being "racist".
BTW what I said above can't be classified as racist. Aussies aren't a race. Now I know I was talking about White Aussies, but pointing out that the ancestors of many of these aussies were British criminals isn't being racist.

Sydney has suffered a second night of violence and destruction in what appeared to be a backlash against the previous night's rampage by white racists.


Police said seven people were injured and 11 were arrested in the latest flare-up of ethnic tensions.

Any hopes that the race riot on Sunday would be an isolated incident were shattered after dark when car-loads of youths rampaged through southeastern Sydney chased by hundreds of police vehicles and a helicopter.

There appeared no end to the violence in sight: new telephone text messages were circulating, one calling for more fighting next weekend. “We'll show them! It's on again Sunday,” the message said.
