"Khukuri to cut cake" Political inferences of the action aside, I see nothing funny about a khukuri being used to cut the cake... It doesn't necessarily have to be used to slit throats. "That diplomacy should require two grown men to hold each other while cutting a cake" Could be a metaphor for the complexity in diplomacy! The "two grown men to hold each other while cutting a cake" could be perceived differently from culture to culture. Some cultures could even find it gay!

Of course it is diplomacy! YOu dont need to be brain surgion to figure out this. It is Nepal asserting its bravery while Japan accepting Nepal's bravery, in a light hearted manner. It is a diplomacy, no doubt, but if you stop just their - without seeing the funnier part - you are missing something.

really echoes, you do not find the "khukuri cutting cake" imagery ridiculous? - at least funny, perhaps? [i am not trying to take away whatever diplomatic value this photo op might have had. political showmanship makes strange bedfellows with logic, although the value of the former is no doubt great.]

Better cake below the khukuri than the necks of innocent Nepalese: Soldier shoots youth in Pokhara Despite repeated commitment of Royal Nepalese Army for the protection and promotion of human rights, an RNA soldier stationed at a security check post opened fire at a youth in Pokhara on Saturday. The soldier stationed at Simpani check post, Tundikhel, the entry point of Pokhara, first beat up Khadka (Nar) Bahadur Tamang of Lawanghlel VDC 4 when the latter showed his identity card. “Why do you show your identity card instead of your bag?,” The Kantipur daily quoted the soldier as saying citing an eyewitness. “Then the soldier started to slap and kick him,” the eyewitness added. The soldier opened fire at Tamang when he cried for help. Tamang sustained bullet injury in his thigh. However, security sources say that the soldier fired at Tamang as he tried to snatch the weapon from the soldier. The paper quoted one student present at the scene during the incident as saying that the soldier kicked Tamang even after shooting him. Tamang was taken to the regional hospital in Pokhara in a police van. The authorities are yet to comment whether they will take any action against the soldier involved in the incident. Earlier, an army man Bashudev Thapa shot dead 12 civilians before killing himself following a minor scuffle with local villagers who were singing, drinking and dancing till late in the evening after a local fair at the Kalika Devi temple at Chihandanda on December 14. nepalnews.com pb Dec 25 05
