Interesting take on feminisim and promiscuity that some might like and others may need to take with a pinch of salt. But some interesting arguments worth pondering over:

Sex and the City influences a new generation of college journalists
Dec 24, 2005
by Monique E. Stuart

Unlike most of my female college classmates, I was never a fan of the show Sex and the City. My roommates would rent the videos and buy cheap champagne and watch them. I watched the show with them one night. After barely stomaching two episodes, I declared the show would be better titled “Sluts and the City” and then went to bed. I wish other students had followed my lead. Instead, they chose to usher in a new wave of feminism: Slut feminism, where how openly promiscuous a woman can be without judgment or penalty is the new test of gender equality. Wouldn’t the suffragettes be proud to see how far we have come?

Across the nation other female students were falling in love with the “slut feminism” that Carrie Bradshaw and her sex-obsessed cronies in Sex and the City epitomized. Student newspapers across the country started running sex columns, featuring college women publicizing their sexual exploits just as the Carrie Bradshaw character publicized hers. USA Today reported, “From ‘Between the Sheets’ at Tufts University near Boston to ‘Sex at the Beach’ at California State University in Long Beach…college students are talking about, dispensing tips and offering advice on sex, dating, sex, love, sex, relationships, sex and sex.” After doing some research, I found the topics a little more limited. Mostly written by women, the recurring theme seems to be the female anatomy, female orgasms, masturbation, and oral sex, which, thanks to Bill Clinton, isn’t considered sex, according to most of these students.

From Cornell University’s Cornellingus, to Princeton’s Vulvagraphy, and Yale’s Sex and the Elm City, it seems that the Ivy League isn’t immune to this trend, either. The so-called “best and the brightest” are becoming the best and the brightest of the porn industry. Last month, in Cornell University’s column, the author explained how she could get more sexual pleasure alone from herself than she could with from a man. In Princeton’s column, they compare a woman’s intimate anatomy with a Timex watch, writing, “they can take a licking and keep on ticking.” It’s good to see that an awesome educational opportunity such as studying at one of the most prestigious schools in the country isn’t going to waste. How proud their parents will be when they start their careers writing for the pages of Playboy.

You can’t even judge them. In their moral relativist world, no one has the right to judge others. In Columbia University’s sex column, Sexplorations, Miriam Datskosky explains why the all too common “walk of shame” shouldn’t be shameful at all. She argues that men and women should be able to go out and have sex whenever and with whoever they like, and when walking home the next morning—wearing the same clothes from the night before, their make-up smeared, and their hair a mess—they shouldn’t be judged. “It is not up to a random stranger to make you feel ashamed,” she declares. Moral relativism and the sexual revolution had a baby, and boy is it ugly!

She states, “Every single one of us has the right to choose. That right deserves respect.” Respecting someone’s right to choose to be promiscuous and respecting their actual choice to do so are two different things. I’m not advocating outlawing promiscuity, but I do support holding people morally responsible for their choices.

There’s not much parents can do, short of slapping a chastity belt onto their daughters and sewing their mouths shut. Most student newspapers are independently run. And any attempt to have these columns removed would certainly be met with accusations of censorship by students who have been so indoctrinated that they don’t understand obscenity is not protected by the Constitution. Students, on the other hand, do have some options at their disposal. With the help of organizations like the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, they can bring conservative women leaders, like Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, or Phyllis Schlafly, to their schools to challenge this type of thinking.

For now, unfortunately, it seems that women are leading the charge of slut feminism, considering they are the only ones authoring these columns. But this shouldn’t be surprising when a play like The Vagina Monologues is being performed on almost 600 college campuses. The play’s main message is that women are nothing more than their sexual anatomy. Many students' parents, having come of age in the sixties, might be thrilled with what the seeds of their “sexual revolution” have finally come to reap. Sexual freedom has turned into sexual obsession - with perversion and promiscuity being applauded while morality and chastity are condemned. Female college students from the slut feminism camp have finally achieved equality with the men. It’s a shame, though, that they view equality as an equal number of notches on their belts.

Provocative, no doubt. :)

That promiscuity is still an issue of this magnitude in America is what makes this article interesting. Will Nepal's discourse on gender ever move beyond property rights and taclke issues like these I sometimes wonder. Do the arguments made by the writer apply to society in Nepal? The writer provocatively plays on the name of a TV show but are her attention seeking techniques an indication of a backlash against progressivism gone too far or are they the whining cries of a loosing side?

Slutism in its glory, what's next? Murder with dignity? Holdups with pride? Hey bhagwan where are we headed??
I wonder how the family raised by the "the MIT slut of the year" will be? Imagine a family where moms and dads have different sex partners. Or imagine own parents with different sex partners, troubling isn't it?
Family and intimacy go together. Without intimacy, trust fades away, without trust there is no affection, without affection there is no respect and without respect there is no bond, how can the family exist?

"Moderation" is the word.Have the advocates of libertarians gone extra mile?Perhaps in their media image. For a realist "Sex and the city" is a reflection of bohemian Manahattenites lifestyle nothing more nothing less.
The writer herself is in a state of perplexity. How can someone be a "Slut" and a "Feminist"at the same time.Enlighten me,would you?TOD(Television obssesive disorder)a new kind of disease. Why are these "Ann Coulters"(neo-con feminist activists whatever)after talented Sarah Jessica Parker when you have a billion dollar porn industry employing countless playmates?
Someone certainly feels locked out of real-life Manhattan and is deeply in love with "reel life couch potato"
Bon Voyage "Carrie Bradshaw"with moderation!!!

Alas My favourite topic...

3 months ago my nepali girlfriend was riding high on life..she met this guy..under the pale moon sky good music, candlelit dinner and two glasses of champaigne down her gut...and she ended up exploring more than what she had originnallly planned in her new found date...Date 2: chapter closed...and back to her mundane array of life.

3 months later...She called me to let me know that she's getting enganed to the luv of her life: Only question she had was: Had she done a sluttish thing 3 month s back....Ummm....welll I asked her...did it matter to your date...and NO she said..he was a random slut himself.
Then we both laughed..hahhahaha...
so we came up with this equation man=slut=woman...now who's to who slut???

END OF THE stORY..KApisH!!!!

There was absolutely no need to involve Bill Clinton in this charade of an article. He only screwed an intern (big deal), unlike this present bozo who succeeded in screwing the whole nation. Leave him out of this.

LOL... thugged out is so funny... At times!

I dont know what Monique is talking about. To me she just seems pissed that "Carrie Bradshaw" got so popular talking about her sexploits while she was somehow condemned (by friends and parents maybe!). I am not a particular fan of the show as well, but I dont think it publicizes JUST promiscuity... Just the fact that Women should also be able to express their thoughts and opinion on topics like Sex! It is a character study of four very different types of women and thats all... If you catch on to the fact that they sleep around and NOTHING else, well then Monique watch Vagina Monologue a few more times or stop feeling terrible about whatever you got condemned for!

Captain Haddock, could you please copy and paste my thoughts so that Monique E. Stuart can read it too? Thanks! :D

My opinion on the show is, it's a no-brainer. I mean, it does say SEX and it implies it's in the CITY as in New York City. What’s more in there? Okay some humor and tongue-in-cheek narration by the central protagonist.

Now, whether or not it influences a new generation of college journalists; I have no idea.

(To be honest, I have not read the thread, but assumed it must be about the show's influence in a new generation college journalists by the title of the argument. Out of sheer curiosity, does any of you read their, or other's college journal? Seriously!)

I wish I could take a nap. My eyelids are betraying me.

Coffee please :)

Sex in the City is incredibly amusing...What I at least hesitant to admit in public, is that I am a loyal viewer of X- files. I just can't stop watching.

espresso please... :D

I have watched this TV series couple of times, but never figured out what message Candace Bushnell is trying to give to the audience.

"Moral relativism and the sexual revolution had a baby, and boy is it ugly!"
To me it is an ambiguous statement made by the writer. Moral relativism is boundless and has infinite shades. Sexual Revolution - A big question mark..

She states, Every single one of us has the right to choose. That right deserves respect.Respecting someone right to choose to be promiscuous and respecting their actual choice to do so are two different things. I âm not advocating outlawing promiscuity, but I do support holding people morally responsible for their choices.

My question to the writer- Can morality and promiscuity go parallel in real life?

Fill your days with smiles........

Alright, people need to go pass the view of whats infront of their eyes-- SEX. The show is incrediblyamazing because it touches on the social issues blatantly in your face. Many women's issues are addressed not just about sex, intimacy, but what a woman's heart desires that is NOT physical sex. Yes, they keep on havign sex but the essence here is not how great sex but how it does not fulfil love. They keep having sex in search of love. These are not the portraits of sluts, but the portrait of human hearts that desire love, affection and the feeling of completeness.

Being a conservative that I am, I loved this show for the issues it addressed of breast cancer, equal pay for women, beign a wife and a lawyer, dealing with inter-racial relationships, all the issue that a modern woman faces and to a certain extent even men do.

Please look beyond the flesh that is visible in the TV screen. Sarah Jessica Parker is my hero in and otu of the show. Love it. Its my favorite show.
