 Several dozen leaders arrested

KATHMANDU, Jan 19 -
Security forces have detained several dozen senior leaders of seven-party alliance on Thursday morning to foil the parties? protest demonstration set for Friday.
According to party sources, CPN-UML leaders Pradip Nepal, Keshab Badal, Subash Nembang, Bhim Rawal, Bidya Bhandari were arrested from their residences at round 5 a.m this morning while Prem Suwal of Nepal Workers

and Peasants Party was also arrested at around 6:30 a.m.
Nepali Congress central leaders including Shekhar Koirala, Sujata Koirala, Dr Ram Sharan Mahat and Laxman Ghimire among others were arrested this morning.
The government is also preparing to put the senior most leaders including Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala and CPN-UML General Secretary under house arrest.

Speaking to eKantipur, the UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal said, ?This government has become insane and has started arresting the political leaders,? adding, ?This series of actions show that the government is bent on suppressing the people?s civic and constitutional rights.?

Nepal also said that although the parties are bent on defying the government?s ban orders peacefully and with non-violence, the government?s cruel actions prove that it is against the human rights in the country.

?With this action the government is nearing its end.? added Nepal.

The government had ordered the security personnel to arrest some 200 leaders on Wednesday night.(hb)

Rights activists Pahadi, Dr. Panday, Shrestha arrested

Police on Thursday morning have taken into custody noted rights activist, Krishna Pahadi, one of the coordinators of Citizens’ Movement for Peace and Democracy (CMPD), Dr. Devendra Raj Panday and editor of pro-left monthly magazine, Shyam Shrestha Thursday morning.

A family member of Pahadi told Nepalnews that plainclothes security personnel took Pahadi into custody at around 5:30 a. m. this morning. He was taken to Gaushala police post from his residence.

Similarly, family members of Dr. Panday told Nepalnews that security personnel took him into custody as soon as he returned to his house from morning walk at around 8:30 p. m. He was told that he would be taken to Armed Police Force headquarters at Halchowk, Kathmandu.

Editor Shrestha was also arrested this morning.
