What i am trying to talk here is the use of the word 'namaste'. Well, in case of respected people, fair enough, you wish to use it heartily. But ,People are divided into two classes all over Nepal ..... Seniors , A's class expect to receive 'Namaste' from others becasue it shows whether you are Manager or Clerk, Boss or a servant, Rich or Poor....
guys, drop your opinions about the use of Namaste ... ( Namaskar!)

One morning when I saw a senior man in Nepal I did Namaste to him and he returend my namaste. After a while one of my aunts told me that I should not be saying namste to anyone for few days becasue I was in my monthly cycle. I still think that was so crazy.

Were you in monthly cycle when you were young as this little girl?? Are you crazy Dalli? Ki bkashe hau??

When did I said I was a young girl? Yes, I might be 14-15.

Yah I am among those who like to use "namaste" heartily. I think Namaste is there to acknowledge the presence of another person, especially nepali, and deem that you are in peace with that person. Of course, the element of respect is there, but I find it very amusing to use it with the peers too. Though in my experience, I have noticed that the female peers seem to get insulted with this gesture. They would rather resort to that cliched "HI.." . but I believe Namaste is SuperCool, at least for me.

"Namaste Sajhaites" ....Doesn't it sound nice? At least I feel it does. I have had such experiences where people have found akward with my "Namaste" greeting. I still vividly remember one of my early days in the states. After my class, I was introduced to a fellow countryman in a lobby filled with all the white students.Spontaneously I greeted him with a namaste. I could see an akwardness when he responded with " Abuii namaste re." I wonder what's wrong with namaste!

i feel namaste a bit more formal and elderly ... why not use jadau or taremam .

Tara dil kholera gare je greetings ni ramro huncha- mukh bangyayera garu ki nagaru sochdai garne namaste, ra thula bada le garib guruba lai jani jani hepera 'Namaste..." bhaneko chahi patakkai man pardaina.

Niccha hasdai bhudi lageka adhbaise hakim haru le "Namaste! Ke sewa garau bhannos" bhaneko sune bhane mero kansiri ko rau tatcha. A lot of times this namaste is a 'look down' on people/women- can't even express their greetings with warmth. I'm sure a lot of people/women in Nepal get this, namaste filled with sarcasm- I don't see a reason why we should enjoy it.

I totally agree with the above statement. When I say Namaste to relatiely 'Young' Bahujus, they really get offended. One Bahuju went so far to tell me I was doing that on purpose to make her look old.....in front of the crowd....So, the conclusion I drew was Women in 30's and above seem to take it graciously, but younger ones - Forget it...It's insulting to them !

I think namaste is the most honorable greetings and thank God my son ( 2year old) knows it thought he says it पेस्तेते not नमस्ते । हिजो अस्तिसम्म त अस्ते भन्थो अहिले त पेस्तेते भन्ना थाल्यो । hope he will learn the real word soon.

When I talk over the phone with my close friends, I greet them by saying "Namaskar Sir, K chha haalchaal tapainko" . It's a lot of fun and often times it works as a sarcastic opening to the conversation. Most importantly, it helps to revive the Nepali side of me in me.

As the saying goes, Different strokes for different folks. I am sorry to hear that you take such gesture as a means to subjugate women. It was totally not my intention. If you look beyond the households of clans, Bijaykumar and hakims accepting ghush, Namaste has a more prevalent implication in context of our nepali society and many villages for that matter.

My namaste slips out before my id, ego and superego have a chance to contemplate about it. My reference to the female peers was based on my sole experiences, where I was often frowned upon by the fairer sex who believe the need to *hug* as the only means to show your comfort and the breaking of the ice. And often there's a slight reference as being "PAKHEY." But just like you, I see namaste from an entirely different perspective. I have never thought in terms of sarcasm, belittling and insulting.

It is however good to live in harmony with all our differences. :)
