Samdey night SUCKS………

On March 24th, 2006, performance was jointly sponsored by Signature Realty and Vishow Sandes Nepali language monthly tabloid of Washington DC in Best Western Hotel, Vienna, VA. First of all, name of the performance itself was not only inappropriate and unfair but also very misleading. Calling ‘Samdey Night’ for the performance - Samdey’s role was nothing more than moderator with jokes and some biased caricature. It’s not surprising as many of audiences already knew that one time Samdey was hard-core protégé of UML and he still is. He did very demeaning caricatures of the personalities he chose other than UML boss Madhav Nepal. He did not hesitate to disrespect publicly the democratic fighter late Ganesh Man Singh. Regardless of what ideology Ganesh Man had, it is clear that he dedicated his life for democracy in Nepal. Then why should Ganesh Man be ridiculed by Samdey in foreign land?

Samdey repeatedly mentioned that he is from the lap of Gauri shankar Himal in Dolakha. To me, it was okay for introduction in the beginning as to who he is. But, audience don’t need to hear that over and over. It makes me think that he is really overwhelmed being a Sherpa of remote area and now lucky to be performer in a privileged stages. However, many of his audience know that today he has lavish life style as a reward for being UML protégé. To prove further his lavish life style today, Samdey is being served by two Sherpa boys all the time. This commentator was told by someone who witnessed Samday in 7-Eleven while enroute to his destination. One of boys was pilling and serving the eggs to Samdey while another boy was having him sipped orange juice from his hand. Yet, he is very demeaning to them.

As for the positive aspect of the night - Dandy Sherpa’s solo with ‘Tungna’ in Sherpa language was very entertaining and so was Vijay Lama’s. There is no doubt that Vijay Lama is a modern popular pop singer in Nepal. Vijay’s performance was extraordinary for that night. Local singers Kishor Chhetri, Gambu Lama did fabulous performance. Tamang Selo dance by Shyam Khadki and Saraswoti Rana was great. Other dances by two Gurung girls and Palavi Rana were not less entertaining for the audiences. Skit by Raja Ram Poudel and his team was somewhat educational against bad practice of patriarchy society. With this summarization, Samdey has been proven to be just a biased moderator for that event, but, unfortunately, the event was named after him. It’s obviously the great undermine for other talents.
