Can anybody help me out on how to use mIRC? I installed mIRC software but am not able to join to user group that I want to. I need to connect to irc.freenode.net, community #Asterisk or #Asterisk-dev. Thanks for any help in advance.

you might have figured it out by now...but here it is anyway.

If you downloaded mIRC and you've filled out required fields on CONNECT and CONNECT tab's IdentD, you're ready to connect. But wait, make sure on DCC tab, you checked "SHOW GET DIALOUGE".
Then click okay to close the option box.

on the main window, type this(inside quote) "/server irc.freenode.net 6667" do not include quotation marks.
after you 're connected to the server type, "/join #Asterisk" or "/join #Asterisk-dev". Once again do not include quotation marks.

next time you start up mIRC after closing, you can just click OK to the option box and click the "connect" Button.
if you want to add the server to the list...well, tell me if you get this so far, ill let u know!

For those people who are new to mirc, the following site might be helpful. Many people i know have asked me show them how to use mirc and i did show them but after i left, they would get confused because mirc is little bit harder to learn to use than regular p2p programs. because you have to know different commands and once you join the channel, you might get confused or even lost after seeing all those advertisements from bots.

so people who are new to mirc, i suggest you goto http://www.packetnews.com to find what you are looking for. You dont have to know any mirc commands (although it will definately help if you know the basic ones). You just search for whatever you are looking for and it'll show you the results and all you have to do is click on the packet # link and it'll automatically load your mirc and connect to the server, join the channel and even copy the command to request the file you want to download to your clipboard for you. all you need to do is just press ctrl + v to paste the command from your clipboard to the mirc window and hit enter. that's it!

MIRC is definately tougher to use than other P2P softwares.. another website for MIRC file sharing downloads is www.ircspy.com

i personally prefer to use Bittorrent instead of other file sharing programs.

Once you get your hands on, you will find it easy.
i've been using mirc for 5-6 years, and its definitely better than P2P
file sharing...no fed. gov't is allowed to look in...supposedly from clinton's one of the bill he signed.
thats waht they say.

If I am not mistaken, ircspy.com doesn't get updated anymore. they just get the news feed from shoutwire. I remember reading a posting from that site's admin that he can't/won't be updating the packets. that was last year. So i haven't really used it in a while. and there is no question that mirc is better than p2p. i used to use morpheus, limewire, kazaa lite etc etc but once i started using mirc, I haven't used p2p programs after that.

yea, he used to have his own news feeds, but now they have shout wire with big fonts and stupid news junk. He posted that he wasn't gonna update it anymore too. sala aalchi!
but still, its a pretty good search for IRC and packetnews is not that bad, but i get more results from ircspy than packetnews. and they have their own software, so if you don't want mIRC then you download their software, and download thru their software, without opening up mIRC. which is pretty cool, i tried it once, but i rather see "you have been placed on queue #111000, rather than staring at small program and try to figure it out!
