This time around, people had unmistakably wanted a change. And they were this much close to that change. But the politicians who felt more secure in the status quo than in a change succeeded to abort it, divert it.

Now the politicians are going to pretend working hard to bring some change and they will be able to confuse people.

The revolution is aborted for now.

If it does not resurrect by coming Saturday, it's gone.

If it's gone, then everybody won.

King won with his crown and invisible power retained

Politicians won with getting what they always wanted

The Maoists won by proving that revolution, at least in Nepal, will come only from the barrel of gun, it will not come from anything else.

Congratulations to the victorious all !

If leaders don't get blinded by power again and make constitutional assembly election the only agenda of the reinstated parliament, if the civic society continues its vigil, there still may be some hope, otherwise everything will be same.
There was so much repression by the govt. against the movement, who is responsible for this? Being an absolute king, kg should be held accountable. Tulsi giri and kamal thapa were his pawns only. I wonder how these leaders going to punish kg? Or is constituent assembly itself the punishment for monarchy? But if the assembly elections is held without monitoring of RNA, what will be the outcome?

Nepejee, this was the first crossroad of SPA's roadmap. They have reached there. We have to see what they are going to do now? Which direction they are taking from this cross road.

Gautam-jee,

Yes, this is a cross-road, but not the first one. This is the final cross-road. One step of re-conciliation, then there is only one-way to go.

Also, this is a cross-road where people do not walk. So, from now on, politicians are on their own. And giving the diversity of opinion among them, not to mention ...well, there are just too many things not to mention, cause of revolution will be lost in confusing diversity and maneuvers.

And remember most of the powerful politicians are monarchists.

And about holding KG responsible for death of 14 people and all that happened, of course he is. But nothing can be done about that. Our leaders are not going to put KG behind the bar. Keep watching, our politicians will start praising KG, like they did to KB.

Nepe -

I would have liked to see the Monarchy abolished by this movement. I beleive a republic is the right political setup for Nepal. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like such a thing is going to happen this time. The King seems to have managed to save his rear-end by a hair. I too have my doubts about the ability of any future setup to overthrow the Monarchy but, like you allued to earlier, I think the parties, and to some extent the public, were begining to loose the stomach to take this further. You reap as you sow and what we got is probably in line with what we were willing to pay.

I am cautiously optimistic about the outcome of this movement but will reserve final judgement till I see concrete steps taken towards a constituent assembly and a new constitution. For now, the might of the people and the rule of law have prevailed and the April uprising of 2006 has taken the country a step closer to peace and prosperity.

Yes, the revolution is almost over but the its repercussion is yet to be seen. As many of you suggested, we can still reach there. We can still get there with more nepalese people to cheer about it.

But what looked like a sureshot stamp to the end of monarchy until yesterday, now looks fizzle. Have to agree that the king is not going to let go a single opportunity to save the monarchy from now on, and with remaining intact inside the palace, the job for him will be lot easier. He will do it by hooks and crooks, mark my words.

Yes, I was not directly involved in the fight so it is easier for me to say, but change of this magnitude is not possible without revolution and blood bath.

Alas, so close, yet so far.........

Unless SPA and people's movement II's ROAD MAP is completely acheived by bringing Maoists in the mainstread politics as Maoists have aggreed in the 12 points aggreement by having constituant assembly election the REVOLUTION will not yet be finished.

People will come out for the aggitation against the ROAD MAP. This is the acheivement of the poeple and they must come out to protect it.

This is the road map:
*************************************************************
Nepal: SPA's roadmap to peace

Sheela Bhatt in Kathmandu | April 24, 2006 19:35 IST

Nepal's Seven Party Alliance has announced the roadmap to peace.

According to Nepal Congress spokesman Krishna Sitaula, all political parties of Nepal have agreed on an multi-phase programme for the restoration of normalcy which will be in the following sequence:

1) The King will have to announce the restoration of Parliament of 2005.

2) Multi-party government accountable to Parliament will be formed. This government will last for a very short tenure of probably a month or less.

3) That restored Parliament will, on the very first day, announce the declaration of intent to have election of Constituent Assembly without setting the time-limit. Also, importantly, Parliament in the same session will invite the Maoists to debate issues pertaining to the Constituent Assembly. Although in the past, Maoists have twice been invited for talks, this time there is an agenda to discuss the issue of Constituent Assembly with them, said Sitaula.

4) The interim government wil be formed with the Maoists on board.

5) The interim government sets in motion a process to elect the Constituent Assembly.

The SPA believes that Maoists should agree to this schedule.

The Nepal Crisis
Sitaula said the Maoists need not worry that the King and Parliament will gang up to crush their movement. He assured that political parties will abide by the agreement between them and the Maoists.

The Nepalese movement has reached its peak in which 5,000 people have been injured ,16 have died and three are missing, said Sitaula.

He said this movement has brought 6 million people onto the streets of Nepal to protest aginst the King. People want a Republic of Nepal. In August 2005, the Nepal Congress had changed its manifesto by withdrawing support to the constitutional monarchy.

When asked if the Maoists would surrender arms before talks start with them, he said, "Don't say 'surrender of arms', it's an issue of management of arms."

He said that since the last five decades, the issue of controlling of the army is the most crucial and has still not resolved.

The meeting between political parties and the Maoists will debate over who should control Nepal's Army.

Situala said that parties and Maoists believe that it should be under the elected government. He was hopeful that within seven days some positive result is expected.

If, before Tuesday's massive show of stregth by political parties, the King announces the restoration of Parliament then the scheduled rally will turn into the victory rally, he said.

Orion,

The major party of the alliance was never ready for republic. So it was rather alarmed. As for fatigue, there had never been so satisfying 18 days in their entire struggle of 1297 days since 5th October 2002 for the parties.

As for the people, it had already crossed the "revolutionary threshold". So, some fluctuations, including peaceful days, wouldn't matter. It was not a physical war, it was a war of idea. And the idea of revolution as a distinct possibility was firmly established.

Then the most critical of all, the enemy had blinked. The enemy whose major power was the impression of an unflinching one he had maintained so far had shattered. KG showed the sign of chickening out by the offer of PM under pressure. Misfortune, the fighters did not have a commander to take advantage of that.

ssNY,

Thanks for the clips.

Mr. Lonely and Sweetheros,

Even when everything ends, future still remains. And not everything has finished yet.

Nepe Sir,

Couldn't help writing something in response to your post. I hope we will be able to carry out a decent conversation this time without getting "personal" this time.

Yes, you are right: The "revolution" is aborted. Now it will be Sher Bahadur and the 7 parties running the show. So what changed? Nothing. The parties brilliantly exploited the masses and got what they wanted. The parties proved that they are more "autocratic" and "power hungry" than some of you blamed the King to be. At least, he proposed elections next year so that we could choose our representatives. But the parties, afraid of elections for two reasons wanted to revive what they themselves proposed to dissolve!!! First, they did rightly believe that the people will not elect them again. Second, since they were out of the system for a long time, they did not have enough money for "fohor chunab prachar prasar". Ajab Bangal Gajab Nepal.

The parties are happy. The nation is screwed! What did we the people gain? Nothing. 19 days of agitation, hardships and all that just to bring the people we loathe to power. I don't think the Maoist problem will be solved anytime soon . It will get even worse now. The political parties joined hands with the Maoists to achieve their own political ends. Now they have achieved what they wanted, the tactical alliance with the Maoists too, is aborted. This is indeed a sad situation for Nepal. The political parties who have no leadership, no concrete plans and who can't even look beyond their interests, will make the matters worse. Don't expect the Maoists to give up violence now just because the "burgeoise" parliament is revived.

It is easier to remain outside the system and say whatever comes to your mind, but once you are inside the system, you will have to adjust to the system and follow the system's norms. Sher Bahadur will be our new PM, and he will continue with his "hard line" policies towards the Maoists. Girija will criticize and pressure Deuba. Then Deuba will be forced to resign. Girtija will be PM again and will be following Deuba's policies. Deuba will then criticize Girija for not doing anything.. And the govt. will change again. Give us a break!!! how many more years of this instability!!

Also this has established a bad preecedent in politics. It is probably the first time in the world in the last 50 years where the Supreme Court's decision has been overruled by the leaders using street violence. I don't think this happens anywhere in the world. A nation without any respect for the judiciary is indeed a screwed nation.

I feel really sad that 15 people died and countless injured for nothing. The parties proved again that they are oppurtunist to the core. If they had either "fully" joined the Maosist, or the KIng against the Maoists, then the nation would have experienced some changes. But for at least 5-7 years, the situation will continue to deteriorate.

The only positive thing that might come out from this revival is that the people would now fully realize how bad these leaders are, and we might see an increase in either the Maoist supporters or the King supporters. Believe me, the next andolaan will be teh most decisive one.The next andolaan will either ask the King to assume full control again, or have the Maoists in power. The parties have, by focsing on their petty power aspirations, shot in their own legs. Parties should now brace themselves to face the "wrath" of the people whom they have shamelessly exploited again and again.

.
i_f jyu,
i think we will have to agree to disagree on what constitutes autocracy

for me, trying to hang on to a kursi by political machinations is corruption, killing 14 people to prove that you are the master and commander is autocracy. i guess you have a different viewpoint. but that is your perogative, my worldview dosent allow me to cut off your communications, or for that matter, to imprison you for your thoughts

no one doubts the power-hunger of the current politicos
but as of this moment the only way they can stay in power for the long haul is if the majority of their short-term decisions are the right decisions. if you agree that their utilization of the mass movement was a 'brilliant tactic', you cannot go and accuse them of extreme stupidity in the same breath

as for the maoists, what was the main thrust of their hatred? where was the finger pointed? the feudal monarchy and its attendant evils. remove that and you remove their most potent recruitement tool.

and i happen to agree with them on this one. id rather that 10,000 kids got a high school education than one bloodline buy new bullet-proof jaguars every year. but then, if you choose not to free yourself of this mental slavery, that is your perogative. my worldview allows me to fart in your general direction, but it does not allow me to lob cannisters of teargas

and back to the maoists. i am of the opinion that the top echelon leadership comprises of enough hard-nosed realists who recognize that a communist nepal is untenable to india and thus has no chance of long-term survival. their best hope of a socialist nepal lies with the political mainstream, not outside of it. they may huff and puff for the moment, but they have to placate their own cadre that they arent abandoning the revolution.

i think you are right in assesing that the maoist problem will not 'be solved anytime soon'. however, i think we have differing ideas on how this situation will play out.

a) the monarchy is not abolished, retains its 1990 powers. in this case, the conflict continues unabated. therefore,in insisting that the king is all-benevolent, sir, it is royalists like yourselves who pose a danger to the nation. you are so hung up on the idea of the royalty defining the country that you miss the forest for the trees. im not blaming you for the maoist violence of yesterday, but i might blame you for the continued maoist violence of tomorrow

b) the monarchy is reduced to an absolute ceremonial role
there will be factions within the cadre that cannot accept this on ideological grounds and will rebel, even if some factions accept it. the size of the split i cannot pretend to even gauge. however, this will mean continued bloodshed. i dont know about you sir, but id rather a white elephant was put out to pasture than any more nepali lives lost. again, im not blaming you for the crimes that the maoists commit, but surely you must recognize that your stubborness leads to their hardening, and altho you do not pull the trigger you do provide them the ideological gunpowder.
parallel to this, the army gains new legitimacy in the fight against the rebels, which opens up another avenue for some army general to declare martial law or throw his weight behind the monarchy, in which case we are back to square one

c) now imagine a republic
goint back to my original point, who can the maoists now point fingers at?
you say 'the bourgoise government'.
i say your clutching at straws to justify your position.
my worldview allows me to point out to you are wrong, it dosent allow me to shoot you
but such considerations never stopped your divine monarch, long may he live

i_f jyu, come the next elections, join me and together we will vote deuba and girija out of office. maybe paras can run for president. why dont you vote for him?

I totally agrre with the growing sentiment that GP Koirala should not be the next prime minister. I have raised this issue before, Giija is somewhat responsible for bringing the country today in a big mess. We all want public apology from him. When late king Birendra was murdered, as a prime minister of the country, Girija could not come out publicly and assured people that as a prime minister, he would probe the incident and bring the truth out to the people. If he had done so, monarchy would have ended then but no, he acted like a chicken and shut his mouth. He has not shared with people regarding what he knows about the royal massacre. I hope, before he dies he will spill the beans.

Nepali congress, so called democratic party in the country doen not have democracy in the party. Otherwise, 85 year Koirala woud not be our prime minister again. But let's give Girija a benefit of the doubt. He was the one who initited 12 point agreeent with the Maoist when no one could break the ice. May be, he feels bad for what he did and did not do in the past, and corrects his mistakes once and for all and lead the country towards constituent assembly, and get rid of monarchy ultimately. Otherwise, People were not afraid of the despot King, Girija also will have to pay for his share of mistakes. I hope he can die in peace with pride.

Jai NEPAL Let's hope for the best for now.

IF-jee,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your views. As you know I always reciprocate decency.

Yes, the "revolution" was aborted from an inch of it's birth. However, it still has two more chances, one is less likely and the other is with very high likelihood.

Less likely, or near impossible, is some sensible strategic decisions by the Maoists. If they give up their brand name and convert themselves into a socialist party with democratic republic as the final and resting cause, they can lead and complete the revolution without much difficulty.

Then a realistic chance is CA. If the pro-republic nostalgia of Jana-andolan can be re-created, it can write off monarchy.

If monarchy survives, then it will be there for good.

In any case, monarchy lost a lot. The most important of all is it's dignity. Gyanendra's misadventure's cost.

But the group that lost everything is the one who supported and co-operated with King's regime. Prakash Koirala, RK Mainali included.

However, I agree with your points about our political leaders.
