Friends,

I am thinking of forming an official organization of Nepali Phds in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (CS) from all around the globe. Students pursuing Phd at present can also be the part of the organization. The main purpose of the organization will be to form a productive group of like-minded people where each member can share his/her research and other experiences which could be useful for other members. We may start by forming a google group or something.

What do you think ? Please drop in your idea here. Let's see if we can get started.

Thanks.

A thoughtful idea, but how about including grad students as well. They might have researches/findings to share.

Please stop being clowns! No better than corrupted leaders back home!

Flip,
Do you know the difference between "being a clown" and corruption and how they relate to one another?

They do not relate, Shiva but always making a mockery of good cause is not healthy all the time.
Mentioned corrupted leaders as they are after one another all the time. I should have clarified.
:)

Ok guys....

No more leg pulling....Ha ha
PHD is good thing, but involves others as well.....if you determine value of humans based on degrees only....99% of world has no value....

Like minds have right to work together...but like minds should include CS/EEs not just CS, EE PHDs...Students/BS/MS...ametuers who are interested....

humor लाइ humor को रुप् म हेर्नु पर्छ र criticismलाइ criticismको रुप मा हेर्नु पर्छ। Just like you cannot mix corruption and "being a clown" or humor together, criticism and humor does not relate either I am no comedian but I do try to make people laugh, that's all. That was only humor. Take it easy dear.

In some instances ideas of Ph.D errupts from not being able to get a job and unwillingness to return home without any accomplishments in life. How about accomplishments back home? The question may be aroused. Answer to that my friends is complicated considering the basic infrastrcuture of the country.

In some cases desire of Ph.D comes when you are pursuing the BS degree, the methodology and the ideas and the motivation towards the research fields could drag you from the job market to Ph.D.

Not being able to get H-1 and joining the grad school and leading towards a Ph.D can be observed in nepalese society.
Either way "KNOWLEDGE IS POWER"

I am not optimistic wiht the idea. Most Nepalese are selfish, therefore they would not honestly be willing to share their idea and knowldege in practice through such forum. Even if they do, I am sure that none would make any constructive contribution in building the nation (who would sacrifice their time for nothing? Most of them are mony minded and such corrupted minds can not be expected to do such benevolent jobs), or even among themselves to overcome difficulties of each other.

I see forming such a group as another attempt to establish feudal academia in which voice and talents of juniors (Master's and BE or whoever) would be overlooked.

First off, let me thank you all for the responses. It was just a random idea really that sprouted on my mind sometime back and I was looking for a suitable platform to put it forward and since sajha is a popular site among nepalese, I thought it might be worth sharing the plan here. I am planning to put this forth in the upcoming ANA convention as well, if it works out.

Yes, it's just an initial thought and nothing has been materialised so far, that's why I was asking for your opinion. As I mentioned already, the idea is to encourage all nepalese, working and researching in EE and CS fields to come together and share their experiences. Working in synergy is the whole idea behind this and yes, I agree that it should not be limited to Phds only but graduate students or others who are aspiring to contribute are also more than welcome to join.

The discussions will not be limited to research and studies but I am planning to extend it further to be able to make some contributions to Nepal. That's the crux behind all this idea. Once the organization is up and running, I am planning to discuss my ideas in detail. I hope others will reciprocate too.

The problem right now is that I don't see how to reach to the target people. As per my initial plan, I will open a google group and will send out emails to all the nepalese organizations around the globe. I think it should work although I am not 100% sure. In any case, I will be more than happy to at least come up with a plan for its inception for now. Once that is done, we can discuss views from different people in the forum itself and plan on fulfiling the ambition.

Thanks, and please do encourage and support us by giving some helpful suggestions.

Don.Corleone,
Forget 'em bombaclaat, who don't understand what it is to have passion for education, a passion for devoting your time and past of your life learning what other people learnt and thought it is worth passing on to other people. Sure, it doesnt necessarily need to be academics. But hey! academics is the best place to be. You can learn things with all the mistakes that you want to commit and still be okay, if you fail and slip. You get up and move on again with the hope to not slip again. LIfe it aint that simple. At times, you mess up one, you mess up bigtime. There are strong possibilites that you might neer get back on track. Anyways, its probably useless to explain this to dumbass-es.
Aniways, Don. Corleone: I think you brought a great point with forming some kind of group that may be in future we can get together and contribute something significant with joint effort back in Nepal. And until we can do that, we should still share our knowledge and interest to see if we can correlate what we do to further advance in our chances of putting together our learnings towards better Nepal. For me, I am 23 years old, doing my PhD in CS at MIT. My concentration is Game Theory and Network Optimization. Please email me Don if you want. May be we can seriously get something together for upcoming ANA event at New York.

best,
B.

that is bullseit idea.

who does PHD?? who has no job or who didn't get job and had free time, nothing to do. if you are smart you will get job when you finish undergraduate. if not when you finish your masters. see, people who has phd degree, i really respect them but what is the outcome of being phd............................

waste of time..life and it will be another waste if you form an organization with oldie craps. why don't you remove phd and form an organazation which will be meaning ful and fruitful

this is my personal openion, you might have different, it hurts your feeling, i can simpy hearitly say sorry.

cheers

Smiles,
Let'em do it. They think people will bow to them once they flash their PHDs on peoples faces'. One is fully educated once it understands the limitations of the education it receives not other way around.

Even though I try to be restrictive on responding to different threads, my quota is running out .... gzzzzzzzzzzzz... help!!!! any one??

Wow,
Shiva and Smile Sharma, Sure I have no beef against what ya all thought of PhD. But for me, I swear to god, it is just the continuation of academics. And dont be surprised, if I am telling you today that I will do post-doc. You know what that is??
Sorry sorry brother, didnt mean to look down on you. I will tell you my short story, if you have few minutes. I came to NYU to do my undergrad when I was 18. I finished my bachelors in CS and bachelors/masters in Mathematics(NYU has that program) in regular four years. Okay, thought I will go, get a job. Worked at a New York Bank(I know I am keeping the name out), as a Financial Analyst. First month great, flew around, trainings workshop, try to learn the whole office instead of just Customer Analytics Department, guess what happened, in one month I was done. There is no left to learn or do. After that, I freaking took over the work. I was coming up with Time series models for them every week instead of every month. Ahah after three months, I was seek of that repetitive work. I understand, may be all works are not like that, but people like you who brag about 9-5 work, trust me nigga, there is nothing to it, other than you try to kill time and your brain everyday. Anyways, so deciding to come to Grad school, expect here at MIT for a 4 years PhD program, loving it. Research and research and research, love it. I never know what I am getting into the very monday, and by the end of the week, when me and my group come up with a result, then I know this is fresh and this is what I PERSONALLY LIKE. So please dont put up your personal opinion about PhDs onto other people. They have differrent reasons for it. Sure, its okay, you came out of associate degree or whatever it is. Thats fine. You already knew what you need to know and they are contained. Great, but think before you speak, specially if you dont know what you are talking about. I am 23, and I want to get this done by the time I am 26. Three more years, and watch me, I will come here in Sajha and ask fellows to join me in a POST-DOC organization if you know what that means!!! Industry and job is boring for ME. LABS, RESEARCH and ACADEMIC WORLD fantasizes me! GET THAT.

I am glad to know your how you feel about research and happy to know about your accomplishments. I sincerely hope that you will keep enjoying your life as a researcher and one day you finally be a professor and we could read about your latest research here in sajha.

Let me also make it clear that I have nothing against PHDs, may the glory be with you and them.

I was objecting to the idea of secluded club for the elites however you did not get that notion, but I am sure it is clear now and out of the way.

>So please dont put up your personal opinion about PhDs onto other people.
I am talking about the arrogant types who flash their diploma in peoples faces, and I hope you will not be one of them.
This is a public forum and I am CAN express about how I feel about any issue or subject, so can you. Does that mean that my ideas are being imposed? Do I sound like I control peoples thinking? If that is the case please let me know, I did not know I had that talent.

You DO say that you do not look down on people who do not have PHDs but you did it any way. For your kind information there are lot of us who love what we do, I guess it is not your idea of a career. I will not present any defense against your "looking down arguments" on me, I am sure you know the term "its academic" quite popular in the businesses world and you know what that means!

I wish you success in your endeavors and I have no intention to be a career advisor. I said what I had to about the main issue of privileged club, there is nothing more I want to add.

If I offended you in any way Mr. Hova please accept my apology.

I do not wish to pursue this discussion any further, it will lead nowhere.
